Great trip ... love it .... I have a 1990 Westi cali over the pond in the UK ... Watching you 2 guys made me smile ... the various break downs (can relate to that) ... Wish i was in that camp ground with you guys - Great stuff,, You gave me belief again in vanagon ownership
That was the perfect video! You hit everything short of a full cooling system void at freeway speed ~ thanks for rescuing that Westy and sharing the adventure! Wetwesty member and VW Westfalia fb page owner
Thanks Brian! I’m glad we could share the story with you and it brought you some smiles! We can’t save them all- but we certainly will save a few more soon!
7:38 Granny Grosses Busses? Wooooa. I was at the first few get together years ago. Tell Justin and Jason Jay Schmidt said hi. 🙋♂️ good luck with the trip!
I’m sure you heard us way before you saw us! Lol. I still can’t believe someone found the missing donut, and I’d already purchased some long bolts off an Amish man just in case.
Makes me wish my bus was running. I'd probably be at Granny Groses too. Haven't been at a vw campout in around 10 years, and some of those busses look familiar. Anyways hello from Northern NJ
I’ve read all the reviews and people LOVE it, which is why I snagged a can. I’m a fan, especially for engine stuff like this- because it sticks to the surface and breaks up up so elegantly. I’m very very impressed!
Who's that guy without a hat at the beginning of the video? I'v e never seen you without a hat / cap. I can't believe Dan got that van a few weeks ago ...got it up and running. I can't believe Dan would go on a long trip without having road-tested it on shorter trips before a 200 mile jaunt. Did Dan have to go 200 miles just to work on his van?
You're ahead of others, is it possible you fixed the Polish GPS Commander, that would certainly be interesting, and you could surmise what directions she say's? It certainly would allow more freedom of expression.
Great video! Here in Europe it's quite popular to swap TDI-Engines (mostly with the AFN-engine) into these, did you ever come across one of those in the US?
Those engines are pretty uncommon here in the US, where diesel cars make up a wayyyyy smaller percentage of cars on the road. That’s a great swap though!
Many of the Vanagons in my (european) market are diesel powered which puts less stress on the cooling system, improves fuel economy, torque, horsepower etc. Common trick is to fit a VW passat gearbox upside down to add a 5th gear and stronger cogs overall. My ideal would be a Vanagon Westy from Arizona with a 1.9 pd engine giving about 150 bhp. Sigh...
In the United States diesel price is typically a dollar more than petrol as you might call it. Aside from the cost of doing the swap, you have less reliability due to the turbo and diesel pump and belt. Glow plugs and injectors. There is more maintenance requirements and more complication unfortunately in with our diesel price being high, it would take 300,000 miles or more before it even pays for itself unless you do everything cheap and used.
Reliability has to be earned. We’re taking vehicles that haven’t driven in 20+ years and putting them back into service- the same condition vanagon where you’re at is not possibly intrinsically more reliable.
LIVE for these videos. More please

im pretty sure the entire camper van thing is a genius marketing move from the spare parts industry
Oh for sure, except there’s still no available spare parts….
Omg, please keep these up. Super freaking helpful.
I hope to! Thanks for the encouragement!
Totally Excellent and very cool 😎 👍 👌 😀
It is Bad luck to call a Bus a car, just a heads up. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼, AWESOME ADVENTURE though.
G6/Tandem. Sweet combo. (Dan will get it.)
6.5 A1C boyeeee

Just keep at it, you’ll get it running! What’s it need?
Check the airflow meter move the swing plate by hand see if it's sticking or binding
We’re off the side of the road and safely home- thanks though!
this degreaser is pretty awesome but I've never used it before.... Great vlog guys ❤️🏴

@@TheBarefootForge had to laugh bud that's all ❤️🏴
So entertaining and very informative
Thanks for joining us on this virtual journey! It was a fun trip!
Maybe informative. Not entertaining. Don’t care much for the van owner.
Wonderful

I’m looking at one in two days. Where should I look for rust problems?
"It's like stirring a soup pot". I always tell people that shifting a Vanagon is like stirring a bowl of marshmallows with a fish.
Love the video! What brand of ATF would you recommend?
Whatever ya find in an old man’s shed.
Cool! This video has it all.
Better than Mustie1. ❤👍
That’s quite the compliment!

Heck ya! This bus has been on many great adventures!

Where can I find lists of VW Westy campouts?
Probably on thesamba?
Where is the campground, with only Westys?
There are tons of vw campouts around the country!
Gute Reise 🌝
I’m glad I could share the journey with ya!
Is that hatchet vw approved for exhaust repairs?
Whatever gets the job done!

Those diesels work well in the two wheel drive vanagons. It’s still an expensive swap though!

Haha just my luck new video during lunch break!
I’m glad we can entertain!
i wonder, how do your vanagons fail so often
here theyre reliable cars

Tight like a tiger 🤣
Don't trust the zip ties on the mouse trap...when it goes, it could take yer head off😉😳
That would be pretty terrifying if it went off! Luckily, we succeeded.
Iam sticking with air cooled bus
So ATF and no power steering fluid. Today we learned.
Oh for sure! Power steering fluid ruins the seals in the rack.
There are no Abandoned VW Camper Van ...
