Nice stuff, nougat. Left me toothless, but tasty stuff. Montelimar, for me, is the first *real* southern town as you head down the Rhone Valley. Granted, Valence is a worthy contender for the beginning of the true ‘Midi’, but that town lacks the genuine southern vibe one imbibes in Montelimar. It’s in the powdery pastels of the houses and their fading, peeling shutters, the more insistent thrum of the cicada providing the soundtrack, the preternaturally cerulean sky, washed of all impurity by the menacing Mistral but, above all, it was Rohmer who turned me on to this, ostensibly, ordinary town of no great sights (due respect to Adhemar chateau), as his wonderful *Conte D’Automne* , set in and around the town, became one of my favourite films, and, yes, small, unprepossessing, even dull, old Montelimar became one of my favourite places in all France.
