  • In 1994, the UK government got worried that rave culture was some kind of hazard to public safety. The Prodigy decided to intentionally play into that more dangerous image and ended up with one of the defining albums of the 90s.

My favorite album of theirs. Take basically everything that worked on the last one, put a darker spin on it, and you've got this monster of an album. Break & Enter is a menacing yet perfect way to start it off, Full Throttle and One Love keep the goofy spirit of Experience, and of course the big singles Voodoo People and No Good are huge highlights. And yeah, the narcotic suite is definitely something to behold. (Claustrophobic Sting is their Banacheq imo)

This and Experience served as heavy contributors to my soundtrack in the summer of 1996. Helping ro propel my introduction and subsequent exploration of electronic music as a whole. Glad to see you enjoyed it as well!

This might actually be my favorite Prodigy album, just over Experience. So many incredible standouts here, especially Break & Enter and No Good. The energy here is much more intense, but I feel is even more energetic and fun than Experience. Fantastic album overall

The Prodigy needed crazy good album to top Experience and Music For The Jilted Generation delivered. It is the greatest The Prodigy album for many fans and I am no exception. I agree that the One Love edit is the weakest moment of the album, but the album is nevertheless amazing as it is. Favourite track (by a very narrow margin to several other bangers): Break & Enter.
I believe a lot of the "jilted generation" messaging is motivated by the fact that we Gen Xers are the first generation to be better educated but poorer than the previous generation. The Criminal Justice Bill really hit the nerve: We are better educated, but we need to work harder for less pay and now you want to take away our fun, our culture? Of course we didn't know back in 1994 how miserable life will be for the next generations... ...retrospectively we had it so much better... ...a sane World without social media brainwashing people into believing the craziest things...

The thing with One Love is that Liam wanted to include the different, new mix on the album (most likely based on its live mix from '94), but due to the limited space on the disc itself he had to scrap that idea.
The same reason made him remove the original mix of "We Eat Rhythm" which was later released on the promo cassette compilation, but never really got any other proper release (the remixed version known also as the Jungle Beats was included on Electronic Punks VHS).
He also had to slightly cut "The Heat" which is like 1.5 minute shorter than '93 live performance and "Full Throttle" became both bit shortened and kinda censored to avoid the sample issues - the og mix of it from "One Love" single includes the unreversed sample of Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker saying "We're going in Full Throttle" and once you heard the og version of the song the album mix feels a bit like bs because of the messed up titular sample, a detail which changes a lot.
Later on Liam said that he regrets not removing OL and FT as they both already had their chance to shine.

@pewburrito big fan of Mindfields, fat of the land is a much better album in the traditional sense, probably why it blew up. But it does loose a lot of Rave culture in the process

@@sammadden5540 Having started with The Fat Of The Land and being totally unfamiliar with the Rave culture, I didn't miss that element one bit. Although TFOTL remains my favourite album of all time, I could see why fans from the early era had a preference for the first two albums.

This album became immortalized for me due to the fact that some key songs on here made it into the movie Hackers! The use of the songs Voodoo People and One Love in that movie made my love for this album go way WAY up!
It's my #1 choice for an entry point to The Prodigy if I was to recommend this album to a newbie as a means to get into this Big Beat collective.
    Also...sample trivia time:
The Intro. track that kicks off the album samples the movie The Lawnmower Man.
There is a sample of The X Files theme used in Skylined.
The "My Mind is Glowing" bit in Claustrophic Sting is supposed to be a variation of the A.I. voice of HAL in 2001: A Space Odyssey when he says "My Mind is Going."

No Good (Start The Dance) has always been my favourite track from this album ever since I first heard it on a 90s compilation many years ago. Other tracks on here like Their Law and Voodoo People are also some other great bangers too! Can’t believe this album will be 30 years old on the 3rd of July… What an album!

Music for the Jilted Generation was my go-to electronic album in high school (when I wasn't listening to Calvin Harris and the other generic EDM of those times lol).
I definitely agree there are some songs better than others on here, but I love this album's dark edge, and the thumping beats each song gives. The Narcotics Suite in particular is really fun and cinematic to listen to, and breaking down all the samples in the album is really fun (it blew my mind when I learned Claustrophobic Sting sampled Time by Pink Floyd!).
Overall, MFTJG is up there on my favorite electronic records, and the fact that it made an impact on history is really cool to me. I do agree that Liam Howlett trying to walk back its influence is kinda lame though...oh well.

This was my favourite album of all time for a VERY long time, and it's only been in the last decade or so that I'd say it's been eclipsed by other albums like Insides or Airdrawndagger due to those albums feeling a bit more timeless in a modern context. That being said, I am definitely one of those folks who 'were there' when it came out, who'd give it a 10/10 and would call it the best Prodigy album of all time. (Plus, it could be that I've listened to it so much, that I have it memorized). I'd personally put One Love as my 'least favourite', more just because I agree that it doesn't get a chance to breathe, but with modern technology, you can just put the full version in there and boom, it's fixed. (And yes, I am one of those folks who LOVES long songs/albums, so the 80 minute runtime doesn't bug me at all).
One really cool thing about this era (similar to Experience) is all the awesome remixes and b-sides that came out around this era. In particular, the 'More Music for the Jilted Generation' release had some phenomenal tracks, like "Poison (Radio One Session" (with an INCREDIBLE flute breakdown), "Break & Enter (2005 Live Edit)", and "No Good (Bad For You Mix)". Also, Poison's EP with the 3 mixes 'Rat Poison', 'Scienide', and 'Environmentl Science Dub' is soooo good. And what is probably my favourite remix of the Prodigy ever, the Secret Knowledge remix of Speedway, is absolutely god-tier.
In all, I really struggle to think of any single song (remix or original) from this era that isn't incredible. I guess Goa (The Heat The Energy pt2) can get a little repetitive, but honestly, that's a stretch.

I have extremely fond memories of this album. It is one of the first albums I remember picking out of my dad's record collection and listening to often, sitting on the floor in front of the speakers.
I got so enamoured by the intro, Break & Enter (incredibly satisfying banger still to this day), that I vividly remember bringing to a music lesson in 4th grade where we all had to pick a song to show for the rest of the class. The others didn't go as wild as I expected lol, but they still thought it was interessting.
Overall, it manages to both have the intense drive that characterized the first album, while having this more detailed, darker sound to it that is really unique. Might be my favorite album from them.

I had this and Fat Of The Land as my fav albums of theirs with no clear winner, but over the last few years, this has crept to being my favourite one. While I can't deny FOTL has some absolutely massive tunes that define this band, I see Jilted Generation as the peak of Liam Howlett's creativity. Taking the already incredible ground work of Experience and just adding that extra flavour to it. Nearly every track has such a cinematic feel to it and progression that make this an album full of emotional ups and downs. I also rly appreciate how dynamic this album is, especially considering every album after FOTL is basically entirely balls to the wall. Would recommend this to anyone, wether they're into electronic music or not

Your comment about the album name: Interesting that you perceive people who were born in the UK in the 70’s and early 80’s had it easy.
It was brutal and no joke. You’d be shocked and traumatised if you experienced it having been raised in contemporary society.
The world is so much more civilised and safe today.

This one ex equo with The Chemical Brothers' Dig Your Own Hole are my two fav albums of all time.
Maybe it's the FTOTL which is their most popular one, but in fact it's the Jilted which started the whole revolution by taking both ravers, rock/metalheads and b-boys to show them that in fact they are all about the same thing.
It's not the first one who tried that, (Remember the Run DMC x Aerosmith?) but defo the first one which did it on such wide scale.
TFOTL as the sequel tho took the idea even further.

My introduction to this album was a CD comp that featured the dust brothers "remix" of voodoo people (at that point I don't think I realized they were just the chemical brothers) Also I'd consider The Heat (The Energy) to be one of my favourites, mainly because I personally count that ambient piece at the end of Speedway to be part of this track instead, after all it's counted as such on streaming. One Love is pretty much the Achilles heel of the album, and Claustrophobic Sting has always been my favourite of the narcotic suite. I prefer this over experience slightly and it just falls a bit short of the fat of the land due to not being quite as consistent

    • @malakai9738

Also it's not surprising that Experience was their lowest charting album given it was their debut and those rarely get to number 1 due to releasing while they're not very well known

While I'm not exactly sure if I would consider this to be my personal favorite prodigy album out of all of them, I do think it is the most consistent and solid album of theirs overall and the one I'm the most eager to listen too, mostly thanks to all the aggressive and rebellious themes it focuses on while still bringing the hard-hitting and catchy style that experience brought to the table. Maybe in the future I'll consider that album better but for now I think MFTJG is magnum prodigy opus.
