This video gave me ambitions to make computer games when I was a kid. Still remember the day that I keep watching this over and over again while making games. Ten years later, I'm a game developer. Now I'm back to this masterpiece again. Good old days feelings strike me really hard with this, such a nostalgic feel. Without this, I don't even know what my life will look like. Thanks for such a great and inspiring video!
10 years ago, I literally watched this video every single day. To get inspired. I was in high school, and I wanted to be VFX designer. Now I'm on the track. I thank to this video piece. I will love this video forever
Absolutely beautiful. Although there's a nagging voice in the back of my head that keeps saying that even with those tools, there's no way in hell he could do all that in an hour.
Ahhh but you're assuming a man sitting at a desk with a mouse coding this reality by hand in real time. The timer is, indeed, in real time but when he's working he's working at the speed of thought as he's mentally directly interfaced with the computer system. The productivity a person could experience with that kind of interface must be astronomical.
Now in 2024 it seems a bit slow. He could have done this a lot faster with AI. Starting with simple wireframes, prompting, then doing in-paintings to adjust things, etc.
This video was so intriquing, i was confused for the most of it the first time i watched the video, i didnt quite grasp the full concept of the video. To me the woman that he loves dearly is in the hospital, and she seems to be in a coma. So he decided to make her a wold that she can live in, he made a place for her, a little town, that im assuming they have been before and she loved becuase of how specific it was. The video most would say was that he soley did what he did for his loved one, but you see how much happiness and joy that seeing her move around happily and freely. And the fact that he stayed hidden makes one wonder more about why she is in a coma, and why he didnt show himself, maybe he was afraid she wouldnt remember him or any of the pictures that they showed. He created a world out of love. This in a way is the most out there video we have watched for our MOOC but at the same time, the raw emotions was the realist that one could connect with. Their love is much like the flower, he stands alone, admiring it, much like she did to the flower itself in the video.
About 4 years since I last saw this, it's still has the power to move. And was amazingly prescient in light of recent advances in VR (e.g. Oculus Rift).
this is literally the best film I have ever watched, always breaks my heart. you made it timeless and I hope you will be appriciated forever for this piece of art
Still awesome, even after seeing it multiple times since 2009. We talked a lot about it with my colleagues back in the day, since we build 3D scenes for a living. I even recreated the green "generic" texture and use it on my projects before the texturing phase. Thank to the team for this short.
A truly MASTERPICE! A lovely story, packed into such a short time, so smart! The music, the visuals, but again - the story, what makes this short film a jewel. The symbolism, like making the flower...Thank you! (Looking like such a products, I always sad, that there is not yet an easy click-and-donate system existing.)
Bruce, omg. I have words to describe the feelings i have when i see this. But they fall utterly short of its majesty. My friend what a masterpiece, and fear not the world builders are coming. Some of them are already here, they just dont know it yet.
#edcmooc - who did he do this for? Himself, or her? Did she actually consciously experience it? Also, I think this video shows us as entirely in charge of technology: we are using it for our own benefit, and it is responding correctly. We are the manipulators and masters. Using tools has been part of being human since we first started flint, and this is no different. I see no danger of us losing what it means to "be human" in this video.
Amazingly beautiful short film by Bruce and crew at BranitVFX in Kansas City Missouri. Maybe the best short film I've ever seen?! Incredibly poignant with anybody who's lived a long life as they inevitably confront the death and severe injury of those they love. Even the image in our memory of our beloved animal friends going through medical trauma comes flooding back in our piercing memory. Thanks Bruce and team!
Today I wanted to watch this amazing sci fi short film again after long time and then I realized that was uploaded exactly 10 years ago. Still I love it.
I remember watching this video in 2012, i think it wat the late days of cgsociety. I was in a job that I don't like to do, I was trying to create my personal designs as much as my job allows to, and I wanted to do more... finally 3 years after I quit my job and freed myself to do what I want. It was (and "is" mostly still) the most inspiring thing in my CG life in the matter of env. design and story telling. this is the upmost thing that ahead of its time. Thanks for this Bruce Branit. You've made my CG life much valuable that it can ever be. Really honor for me to know this creation of yours...
to me this speaks to me a little differently then most of you this is my look on this how do you say goodbye to someone you love what better way to build them a world reach out make them your world and remember to always keep them alive in your thoughts remember the things they do and say what would you want them to remember of you how about the beautiful world they can always have
I am so in love with this film - I wish there were more parts to it... For years I have watched it - resembling some of what I've been through medically and how individuals cared enough to keep life beautiful even if I didn't realize it at the time.
Me and my loved one spend time in Second Life, we love your virtual reality, just watched the green screen side by side with the video....very inspiring...I have young adults that have used my home to make movies, one already one an Emmy...probably inspired by your vision...thank you!
I first saw this video in 2011 when i was in graduation, i dont know why i was so i flunced but believe me after death of my girl friend i searched this video madly on you tube and when i found it then I could knew and realised why this was so soecial video. Now i can get the hidden emotional message of this video but unfortunately i never wanted to get it like this way. I lost her in 2019.
What a wonderful animated short. Actually brought tears to my eyes. I went throughout a very bad car accident when I was young and this video expresses that people that care would do anything in the for the one they love. Great job!!!!!
This should win some sort of youtube award for its amazing heart warming story and great effects. There should be more like this on youtube. This is just like the program google sketch-up. Incredible.
This is one of the best videos I've seen in my life!!! Some info, about this video: A strange man builds a world using holographic tools for the woman he loves. This award winning short was created by filmmaker Bruce Branit, widely known as the co-creator of '405'. World Builder was shot in a single day followed by about 2 years of post production. Branit is the owner of Branit VFX based in Kansas City.
Easily one of my favorites. From a first person perspective, if I were to be 'within the body and looking through the eyes' of the man outlined in this video, this is what I would imagine it's like to 'program' a holodeck, or to be a holoprogrammer. A 'new form' of story telling. This is sincerely what I want to do for a living, and this video is a huge inspiration for that.
Wow! just found this again. :-) Because of this short I startet working in vfx 10 years ago and I still do.Thanks guys! Really life-changing. Would love to buy you a round of beers. :-D
@Sylar482 The thing about it is that not just anybody can do such a thing! And he does it so selflessly! The world he built was an artistic masterpiece, and, after a short time, it was thrown away, and all that was left was a single flower that he somehow brought back to this world. No one else got to share the world builder's gift, and that is the true tragedy of the movie. Yet, the world builder himself doesn't even notice! How completely tragic!
Linda Rogers ... I agree. Sadly (or, I guess, happily, depending on how you look at it) the human mind is amazing at structuring and enriching the logical, aesthetic and emotional perception of actions in which one participates. So I remember events and situations in SL much more richly, coherently and meaningfully than any single-camera P.O.V. could capture, even when there's an attempt at 'cinematography' in editing. Sometimes, this even affects memory of facts (e.g., someone will have typed something to me, and I'll remember them as having 'said' it). Often, by comparison with the remembered experience, the video of that experience looks crude, flat, stylized and uninteresting. This happens in other VWs as well -- Warcraft, for example. I'll remember flying a dragon-mount over some ineffably-majestic alpine sunrise scene, then see the same place on video and it will look like a child's crayon drawing. I think there's actually something _physical_ going on with this phenomenon. That is: it's not just the mind 'making up a story.' Rather, it's that, in dynamic participation, we perceive more than just the pixels, but capture a gestalt of the 3D artist's intention, and use that in processing the scene: in effect, inflecting the 'internal render.'
John Jainschigg I absolutely agree on the memory thing. There are certain SL experiences that regularly find their way into my dreams. For example one time I tried to swim to an island that turned out to be one of those off-sim illusion things you couldn't really get to. I dream about swimming with that island out of reach a lot. Also when reflections were new, swimming with a friend and seeing the reflections and distortions above me on the water surface. Oh... and flying my balloon in Caledon!
Simply one of the most brilliant, captivating pieces I've seen in a long time. The concept was both infringing and heartbreaking, and the special effects and minuscule details were gorgeous. Absolutely breathtaking.
that's so sad and beautiful what i'm getting from this is shes in a coma or brain damaged and he builds these worlds for her to show his loves for her and will never leave her side even when she is'nt all there the world could be a place in real life he recreates to get her to remember. I honestly cried on this one

This copy of World Builder was uploaded from an HD file, but for some reason it was not available to play in HD through RUclips. We totally overlooked that. There is a new link to the HD version of the film in the description above. Thanks everyone for your support and comments.
This is why I love Second Life...I can so relate to this man's fascination with his creations...Those emotions are reflected perfectly here...Beautiful work! ~ Blessings Gypsy
This is without a doubt the best vision I've seen for building in VR. It helped inspire part of one of the main story lines in my novel. This is not only a technical achievement but a beautiful artistic achievement. Thank you!
this is basically exactly like being a level designer in video games, start off simple, then detail and color and lastly tweaks. make something beautiful

A truely inspiring video. Stunningly created and the storyline was breathtaking. Remarkable recreation of a world of fantasy. Capturing the true happiness of a woman seeing such a beautiful flower in bloom. The details of textures....truely superb. Special effect..............startling!! Well done
10 years now. Who is watching this in 2019? Still one of the best shorts I've ever seen.
i do fine it funny though it goes up to 480p and calls itself high quality, oh how things have changed
@@sambull9030 2009 RUclips was truly the dark ages.

And in 2020.

Hello from 2021!
This video has become one of the most important videos of my life.
Darius Gabriel Black thank you so much! Please do tell why!
What an amazing story. Congratulations on your achievements! 🎉
Hands down, one of the best short films I have ever watched. Wow!
Thank you!
you said it mate... brilliant eh?
Watching it in 2024 and still getting amazed. Wonderful short film ❤❤
Bruce... 7 years ago i watched this video. and i never watched a short filmas good as this. i learned your name to not forget who made this.
Thank you, very much.

Over five years since I first watched this short film, I have since watched it dozens of times and it just never gets old. What a beautiful film.
Yeah, I came here today after a good +8 years just to watch it again, after being reminded of it.
10 years ago, I literally watched this video every single day. To get inspired. I was in high school, and I wanted to be VFX designer. Now I'm on the track. I thank to this video piece. I will love this video forever
Incredible how this gets better with each year I stumble upon it
Absolutely beautiful.

2020 this short aged extremely well and all the effects still stand well even by today’s standards!

I always watch this video every couple of years. Thank you so much for creating this.
You are welcome.

Do you remember those projector screen shopping assistants from movies like iRobot and others ? They have them in Dubai airport
They were demoed in Shannon Airport at ITLG Young Innovators David Quaid - made by Mayo company www.vbchologuide.com - we tried to get them to 3Dcamp
oh very cool thanks James Corbett
It's happening now.

There's something about this movie that makes me want to go back to it once in a while. Great job.

I always loved this film. It's nice to come back to it every now and then.
12 years later I come back to this video and it's happening now.... it's amazing....
It's just over the.....
2020 and still watching it. Great storytelling.
I still come here back almost once a year to watch this movie. It is one reason that made me to learn 3d.

@counter1245 "And all that for a movie about 9 minutes" this 9 minutes will last an eternity. That was incredible and I definitely won't forget it.
I first saw this video in 2011 when i was in graduation, i dont know why i was so i flunced but believe me after death of my girl friend i searched this video madly on you tube and when i found it then I could knew and realised why this was so soecial video. Here we are in 2024 and the advent of VR, AR and AI is now making this sci-fi short a reality.
What a wonderful animated short. Actually brought tears to my eyes. I went throughout a very bad car accident when I was young and this video expresses that people that care would do anything in the for the one they love. Great job!!!!!
Thanks Bruce for giving your presentation at the KC Independent Filmmakers Coalition.
Makes me cry every time I see this. Just a fantastic idea for a story, and so well executed.
This should win some sort of youtube award for its amazing heart warming story and great effects. There should be more like this on youtube. This is just like the program google sketch-up. Incredible.
208 who disliked this are heartless. This to me is so beautiful a man showing his affection for the woman he loves by building a world for her.
This is one of the best videos I've seen in my life!!! Some info, about this video: A strange man builds a world using holographic tools for the woman he loves. This is sincerely what I want to do for a living, and this video is a huge inspiration for that.
How is it that this film can move me to tears in under ten minutes, when a feature length film won't even get my eyes starting to water?
Wow! just found this again. :-)
Because of this short I startet working in vfx 10 years ago and I still do.Thanks guys! Really life-changing.

It really captures the internal, emotional experience of building in virtual worlds.
Isn't this wonderful? Brings tears to my eyes.
John Jainschigg I often feel frustrated that machinama capture of SL events don't capture the subjective inworld experience.

Beautiful work.
I have been searching this video for so long 😭😭😭
