Japanese Lion Dance ” Shishi-Mai ”
Shishimai in Japan is performed all over the country, and there are many variations. It is said to be the most popular folk performing art in Japan. According to a survey in the 2000s, about 8,000 have been confirmed nationwide, but it is thought that they are decreasing due to depopulation in rural areas.
Toyama Prefecture has one of the largest numbers of shishimai traditions in Japan, and in 2005, it was handed down in about 1,170 locations and is still being performed today, making it the largest number in Japan. The Toyama Prefectural Board of Education announced the 100 selections (actual number: 111 places) in 2005 (Heisei 17) from many lion dances.
