Decided that don’t need THAT much resolution and put $ towards lower ISO performance & better AF in Z6ii version. Wow. Colors, AF, sharpness with Z 35 1.8. I am stoked. I'm in the same camp. High school sports shooter with D5 and D500 and portraits and family etc with D810 which I really love, so much. I bought a Nikon refurb Z6 last year just to learn the mirrorless ways and its OK. When should I purchase a Z7II is my question, really don't need to but........
But when you can pick up any new Canon or Sony camera and have af that just works with both stills and video in harsh light with fast moving subjects image quality means nothing. But I hope they have a win with the z9, if really love to be able to make a confident switch back to Nikon and know that it will work time and time again (surf photography is very very demanding on af, so they're really honing to have to bring their a game with the z9).
As someone who went from a 5600 to a z6ii, I can definitely say it was worth the buy. Even with having enough money to pick up a sony or a canon, I still chose nikon. Their glass is untouchable. Their files are so nice. And when they perfect the system and have a camera in the game that is comparable to the craze that the 850 brought, (Assuming this will be the z8). Everyone will be eating their words. Thank you for your honesty, and your sick videos. I'm a fellow chicagoan as well. I hope one day I run into you shooting out in the wild!
I just shot an event yesterday with my boys. I am a Nikon user, for the first time I rented Sony cameras for the shoot, boy o boy I missed my Nikon quality like anything. the build and ease of shooting. I do not think I am switching to any other manufacture, waiting for Z9
I have never in my life used Wide Area AF. I don't even know that it existed. I always use single point, because I want to control the camera myself, and it works like a charm.
I've known of its existence and purposefully avoided this focus-mode at all cost. I never would've ever imagined professionals to ever work with it. I always thought this focus-mode was included for those still trying to learn about photography. I guess I was wrong. Though, I simply can not, for the life of me, come up with a scenario where this focus-mode is actually helpful or superior than any other focus-mode that exists.
@@nathanhassani5366 There's always something that I want to highlight in my landscape. So, I'd still use single point or group auto-focus mode. It's just my preference though. You can still try wide area auto focus for yourself to see if it is useful to you. To me, it simply isn't.
The workaround for the wide area focus 'challenge' is turning the focus ring of the lens. The focus will follow to the selected object. So you don't have to switch to large point. Works for me when needed.
@@markshirley01 um, when your focus point is not where you want it to be, 'tell' the camera where it should focus, and it'll follow the subject. Still, I know it's a workaround, but the camera has no problems with recognizing real humans. Manny just set up an artificial case with some stool and a bright backgournd.
I'm a Nikon guy and I agree with everything you said. Pros, cons, quirks you nailed it! Personally, I love my Nikon and can live with the quirks because it doesn't impact my workflow or really matter for my type of shooting but you were spot on with all your points and it's worth noting for the potential consumer.
Im still staying with my D750 until they sort this out. Plus I just cant understand why they can't back up video with two processors. The A73 can do it, and how old is that camera. Nikon really need to hurry up or they will lose more customers to their competitors.
More or less, he does in the Classical way (Japanese and Spanish way). But some time ago Nikon say. "Nikon" American style was the correct new way, then they backtracked a little bit and , less time I read it was both are right.
actually Nikon themselves said both ways are correct. but the Japanese pronunciation of Nippon (Japan in Japanese) is NE-Pon so it makes sense that Nikon would be pronounced Ne_kon not Nay-kon
Not really. He says "nick-on", which isn't correct. For a Japanese speaker, the first syllable is pronounced like the English word "knee". But it is also a word that isn't only spoken in Japan, and so however anyone pronounces it is perfectly fine.
As a film shooter, I’m mind blown by the contrast and colors of the Z models. It’s quite reminiscent of film, in my opinion (emphasis on my opinion). On digital I still shoot with a Nikon D700 and a D750, but these Nikon Z have won me over, unlike the photos I’ve seen from other brands (except Fuji). Really amazing photos.
The colour is accurate as well - very impressive for commercial work. See 'the bite shot' she moved to Z from canon because she shoots food and nikon is the easiest to work with.
As a Nikon Z7 II shooter (coming from the D850) I thought this was a very fair video. The only thing I have to laugh about is RUclipsrs pointing out the 1.08 crop at 4k 60fps. C'mon maan can you even tell there is a crop when you are shooting it? LOL. It's not like the EOS R with it's 1.7x crop. Plus, the 2021 Roadmap does not have a single f1.8 lens coming out (those are all released). The new 85mm is rumoured to be f1.2 (I already have the 1.8 and it's excellent). We don't know what aperture the other prime lenses are going to be yet (it's not stated on the Roadmap). You need to be clear on that if you are going to say such things because stating they will be 1.8 is inaccurate...
@@RobOnRefresh Yes, other than that one single lens that weighs like 50% more than the competing offerings while giving the user zero advantages in other areas.
@@youknowwho9247 - LOL well your original complaint was a lack of fast glass. Now it's about weight and advantages? What advantages would you like to see? Most of the offerings out there at f1.2 are phenomenal with all of the manufacturers. Even the Nikon 50mm F1.8 S is phenomenal although not classified as "fast glass" I would say it kicks the crap out of the older F1.4 "fast glass" and it's super lightweight. If you are not a Nikon fan - that's cool but I don't think your arguments hold a lot of "weight" 😉
@@RobOnRefresh The comment is still about lack of fast glass. A 50 is not enough. I need a 35 f/1.4 or faster for weddings and something as long as 400 for sports. The FTZ adapter works like garbage. So what now?
There is something else no one seems to talk about. And I want to ask you two. Nikon vs Sony when it comes to TTL performance for OCF and ND filters. I used Sony with both Profoto and Godox equipment and TTL consistently failed to produce good results with wide apertures (it heavily underexposed). This does not happen to me with Nikon bodies, unless I screw my metering (user error). I currently use TTL to get an initial good estimate of flash power in unusual situations , and I then switch to manual flash for consistency. With Nikon I get almost the same results I get with a flash meter. With Sony, under those same conditions (say f/1.4+ND(-6), ISO100 and 1/125s) TTL underexposes. Have you guys seen this behavior Manny, Francisco?
At the beginning of the video when you switch from the Sony to the Nikon, colors got so much better! The image just got glued together, it instantly had that “wholeness” feeling to it.
appreciate the honest review! I've notice the weird difficulty with focus also, but I mostly shoot portraits and love everything else about it! The Z5 is also the steal of the year if you only need entry level video specs. The IQ is amazing, dynamic range amazing, the images are natural and beautiful not clinical and soulless, I love and prefer pro level 1.8 lenses over 1.4/1.2, ibis works great, ergos are best imo, classic ruggedness typical of Nikon, etc... ALL these new cameras or beyond good enough. It's just about each persons priorities.
I respect this video so much. You took some time with the camera before giving your thoughts and as a result you're really aware of how good of a tool it is, despite it not being on the level of its competitors. I wish all reviews were that honest.
The Z roadmap shows a new 85mm planned, looks like it will be a f1.2, to pair with the 50mm f1.2. I think having a range of f1.8 primes available is great.
@@steventhomas231 i own this, i like this size too. Compact & very good, thats the future for me. And like the aperture rings so much.
I had a Nikon, Sony and Canon...📸 -Nikon shooters are the conservative nature photographers, who mostly photographing for them selfs. Or for a nature magazine! -Sony's are for the pixel peepers, they love digital sharpness. And for the brands hoppers, Sony is good but not a camera with soul. In the End there is no bad camera of course....
That's nonsense. Whoever thinks this has never worked with an f/1.2 prime on a high res camera. You can definitely tell whether the eyes, the ears or the nose is in focus.
I love Nikon and my D850 but got tired of waiting for a professional competent mirrorless camera so I bought the Canon R5......and boy I haven’t been disappointed. Love that camera!!
Good and honest review Manny. I already have a Z6 and recently got a Z7 II and really like the camera, the image quality like you said is second to none. I'm mainly a stills guy and do a little video here & there, so the Z 7 II fits my needs perfectly and the work around is second nature after owning the Z6. I've been a Nikon shooter since the 1980's and just like their eco-system of DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. I'm really looking forward to your upcoming videos on the Z 7 II and other photography topics.

I experimented with adapting some vintage glass to my Z7 II and got pretty amazing results. Using an old f1.2 from the 70's looked almost like 35mm film. It was amazing.
The z7ii is just fine. You need to learn that each af feature is very particular in what you choose for what. I go between 3. I shoot weddings full time for 15 years, I'm used to film, SLR, and in the end shot with the D850. Zero problems with the z7ii. I'm going to wait though to see what they come out with.... 8 etc. Thougt about 9, but I'm fine with this, and hopefully they can come up with an in between 9 and 7ii without bulkiness of 9.
For stills and portraiture it is definitely not practical. That said, its performance is unrivaled and in the cine world it competes head to head with lenses that are 2 and 3 times its price - so its all relative. It obviously isn't a lens that makes sense for us stills folks though - that's for sure :)
It's not a fake flex. That lens performs better than any comparable Leica lens including the Noctilux. It's just not for anybody. Btw, the Leica Noctilux-M 50mm f/0.95 costs 12700 USD as of right now. Would you also call that a fake flex?
Forgive me. This might be because I am still on a DSLR, but pretty much the first thing I learned was to select the AF point myself and not use something like auto area AF, exactly because you leave it up to the camera, and I want to decide where it should focus. Even if an R5 decides to focus where I want it 95% if the time, I’d still rather choose the AF point myself. You say it’s a workaround. Again, maybe it’s because I’m using a DSLR, but I can’t imagine thinking like that.
True, 99% of the time, you'll never be shooting at those aperture numbers. The only circumstances where those aperture settings are actually justifiable are for low light scenarios and for artistic projects. That's it! Besides that, a skilled photographer won't ever go wrong with an f1.8.
In my opinion the point of having f 1.4 or f 1.2 lens are not to shoot at those apeture it is to stop it down to get sharper image but it is argueable that in this day and age the miniscule difference is not worth anything and if that is where you are coming from I totally agree with you but the fact still remains that the image is sharper (most of the times because there will always be exeption for example vintage lens that can go to f 1 will not be sharper than modern days lens if stopped down) and for the focusing problem he is not being negative he is just being objective because the fact is nikon is the only camera with the problem that he showed in the video and you camera not focusing and even though it might not even be noticeable the problem is still there and may be the cause of some missed shot and I kind of knows how he feels because I'm a panasonic shooter which is not really known for having a great autofocus and this autofocus which nearly caused me a missed shot and is what is starting to push me over the edge to fuji right now and I am looking at what they are doing with the xh2 speculation and rumor.
@@youknowwho9247 It must be pretty easy to call a sound argument "nonsense" without providing a solid counter-argument that could actually prove me wrong.
Wow wonderful video, amazing quality . The video on my iPad at 1080 looks soo crisp. What are your favorite Nikon z lenses , Btw, love your watch strap , what brand is it ?
Nikon specifically mentioned an improvement of Eye AF in the new firmware but nothing about object detection. Being optimistic here but I believe that these issues might be fixed in the future firmware upgrades considering this is the first major update (first gen Nikon Z cameras got 3 updates) :)
I'm getting a 97% in focus rate of people on horses going over jumps with my Z6 and Z7II using Wide modes. It almost never misses. The fact that Area and Eye AF may not put a box on the subject is not really important. I suspect in real life, it would take you about 2 seconds to choose the right AF mode and get the shot. Overall a nicely balanced review. And you're right -for someone using one system the Z7II is a terrific camera. I actually think using multiple systems makes it a bit harder - like combining a DSLR and mirrorless.
And, most people don’t understand that exact point. Just because the square doesn’t move as fast as Sony or Canon over the eyeball, it doesn’t mean that you will get an out of focus picture if you take a picture and the square isn’t directly on the eye...The picture will still be 100% in focus because the camera already knows what needs to be in focus, it’s a machine mechanism, so we can truly say that the square is for atheistic purposes....lol. There lies the problem with the whole Nikon blows and Sony and Canon is the best and way ahead...just stupidity over and over again in 2021.
Great advice for the Nikon. I've got an older D90 and no matter what setting it doesn't auto focus very well. I have to open the aperture to get a wider range in focus. I guess after all these years, they still havent figured it out.
Hello Brother Manny Ortiz, which camera is better for wedding videography and wedding photography between Nikon Z 7ii and Fuji Film XT4 ? Thanks Brother 🙏
nice review. 1.1 is really nice also on Z6ii. did you use AF-F and auto-iso for these videos of the girls ? what is the advantage to use wide-s on AF-S instead of single point ? i use my finger on touch screeen to select where to focus :-)
Hey Manny. Amazing video. Btw did you try pressing the ok button in the wide area focus mode. I use a budget Nikon and whenever I press that, it usually focuses on the middle. Idk. It might just help.
I hate that too, but I hit the ok button and place it on the feature that I want to focus on. It is almost like Nikon did this on purpose so that they left it up to the shooter to pick the target instead of the camera. They just never bothered to tell anyone. When I hit the ok the target locks in the middle and I move it to what I want to track and I hit BBF and it hangs on to the subject. But yes it would be nice if I did not have to do that.
Thanks for that, you pointed to the major issue with the Z6 II: the back focus. The AF in Nikon's cameras is 'an eternal issue'. Even the firmware V1.3 for Z6 Ii does not improve the issue. I have complained about the back-focus in Nikon for years, with D500, D7000, over D7200, even D7500 and recently also Z6 II and Z50. It is frustrating for how long Nikon ignores its user and fan base. These cameras will just for no apparent reason ignore even numerous subjects in foreground and focus on the far background: trees, sky, horizon. Maybe the algorithms in the fabled Z9 will finally solve it, now that Nikon in 2020 is merely the distant 3rd in the market share. Maybe they finally awake "oops, we should have respected our users."
So it shows it’s lagging but even you take the picture while it’s lagging and you get everything in focus...what’s the complaint here? Lol ridiculous. Oh look it doesn’t move fast enough that means everything will be out of focus and the camera sucks and it’s not on Sony’s level, blah blah blah...Child, even if the AF square doesn’t move as fast, you still get amazingly sharp and in focus pictures.
@@DuragVince- Did you watch the video and/or read my comment? I have no issues with the eye af, most of the time it works great. The only issues I had with eye af is when it was dark with a third party 24-70 2.8. My issue with the autofocus was with the auto-area not wanting to focus on things in the foreground. I know that there are work arounds to this issue but it's super annoying having to do these and it has caused me to miss many shots. Maybe you don't shoot in the same style as me, and this hasn't been an issue for you. If that's the case then that's great, I loved the z6. Hey, Manny! Great review. Did you use the adapter with older dslr lenses at all? I'm wondering how well the autofocus works (specifically with eye AF for photo & video)
The update on the Z6II was very noticeable especially for AF, not just photo but video it was outstanding which in combination with the low light performance its an absolute beast. I was planning on buying the Z7II to compliment the Z6II but I'm waiting to see what happens with the Z9, ive got no doubt that they are on the right track and I'm going to be stoked to see what they bring.
Some very good comments on the Z7II. I am a Nikon Fanboy but can't say I am the biggest fan of the Z camera, as I just can't get used to the hand grip, which feels inferior to something like the D850, also, I prefer the button layout of the D850 (something the Z9 looks to be more similar to). Where I will defend Nikon is video and lenses. Nikon's philosophy with top end video is to record it externally to something like the Atomos Ninja 5, which has various advantages. Longer recording times, a better viewing screen (you don't need a tilt out screen) and exceptional quality video. As for the lenses. Nikon has been slow when it comes to releasing Z mount ultrafast glass but they have almost completed their 1.8 lens line up, which is exceptional quality and Nikon already has a huge amount of glass for their F mount, which is easily transferred over. Nikon have said that they will announce minimum10 new lenses over the next year (I suspect several for the Z9 at the Olympics), which is actually a huge amount of glass, with the only really maybe Sigma being close and Canon beating Nikon in terms of glass released. I won't comment on the af, because you are much more knowledgeable than I on the current AF of the Z 7II. Really at the moment, you can't go wrong with any of the camera systems (except maybe Pentax) and what ever you get is going to be good.
Those background focus issues are no joke, happens to me from time to time with my Z5 even with a small focusing point. It needs more than a hardware upgrade to fix, they need to improve the focusing algorithm.
Hey Manny we would love to see you comparing Z 1.2,1.8 lenses against RF and E mount lenses since Mirrorless came out no does it anymore there was a time when everyone use to compare Nikon vw Canon lenses and always keep up the gr8 work much love.
Bought the Z6 right before the second generation came out.... really the only thing I want is for the Zone EyeAF to be added to the first gen firmware.

Except their glass isn't untouchable. RF glass is right there with it.
I just shot an event yesterday with my boys. I am a Nikon user, for the first time I rented Sony cameras for the shoot, boy o boy I missed my Nikon quality like anything. the build and ease of shooting.
I do not think I am switching to any other manufacture, waiting for Z9
Wow, I love the Nikon colors, loved the comparison.
@@virtualwarp how about landscape photography when you want to catch a very wide scene?
@@nathanhassani5366
There's always something that I want to highlight in my landscape.
So when your focus point is where you want it but its not focusing just turn the focus ring and it'll grab the object or person is that right.
@@markshirley01 yeah, get it roughly close and af will finish the job.

And the crazy thing is Matt Granger actually pronounces Nikon the correct way.
Also in German ist is Niikon
Not really. He says "nick-on", which isn't correct. For a Japanese speaker, the first syllable is pronounced like the English word "knee". But it is also a word that isn't only spoken in Japan, and so however anyone pronounces it is perfectly fine.
@@matthewwells1606
As a Dutchman, I've always pronounced it as "knee-con."
Funny to realize we Dutch have been pronouncing it right all along.
Five months later - still no fast glass.
@@youknowwho9247 - I assume you mean other than the 50mm F1.2?
Great video as usual Manny. I still love my Z6II and I agree about the lenses. Your reviews are always unbiased and honest. Thanks for the video.
I think with a new processor will definitely help Nikon instead of two of an older model. Can't wait to see what the Z9 brings to the table.
Seeing you twice in one day? What a win for us...
Wish Sony took a page from Nikon's system and made it so you can screen record and look through the viewfinder.
That dirty hdmi signal... I wish
Stop wishing and just use Nikon 😆

Nikon colour looks amazing
At the beginning of the video when you switch from the Sony to the Nikon, colors got so much better! The image just got glued together, it instantly had that “wholeness” feeling to it.

The Z roadmap shows a new 85mm planned, looks like it will be a f1.2, to pair with the 50mm f1.2. I think having a range of f1.8 primes available is great.

I experimented with adapting some vintage glass to my Z7 II and got pretty amazing results. Using an old f1.2 from the 70's looked almost like 35mm film. It was amazing.
The IQ and color from my z6 are the best I’ve seen. And the nef files are just sweet to work with. New FW just came out to further improve af too.
F/.095 a "fake flex". No truer words have been spoke!!🤣
For stills and portraiture it is definitely not practical. That said, its performance is unrivaled and in the cine world it competes head to head with lenses that are 2 and 3 times its price - so its all relative. It obviously isn't a lens that makes sense for us stills folks though - that's for sure :)
And then for that insane price 🥴
It's not a fake flex. That lens performs better than any comparable Leica lens including the Noctilux. It's just not for anybody.
Btw, the Leica Noctilux-M 50mm f/0.95 costs 12700 USD as of right now. Would you also call that a fake flex?
@@TaipeiGeek he's jealous because Sony doesn't make one
Too much negativity, I never get so frustrated over these things... I love my Nikon Z6ii and the lenses are great, 1.4 and 1.2 lenses are over rated.

Wow wonderful video, amazing quality . The video on my iPad at 1080 looks soo crisp. What are your favorite Nikon z lenses , Btw, love your watch strap , what brand is it ?
I am using Z6 II. New firmware made a big step forward. Very good camera. I just wish to have 85mm 1.2 for Z.
Eric what you are saying is Spot On it!!!
I like what you've said in the past, whatever glass you have, you will find a top notch mirrorless for all brands. You can't go wrong in 2021!
Manny's "Wig Twin Brother " and the "Bloopers" are my favorite 🤣🤣🤣❤️.
Started out with Nikon D7500, then tested the Z5 but finally settling with this beauty Z7ii 🥰
Great video, Manny. On point with everything. Appreciate your easy going, non-clickbait approach.
I’m curious.... why haven’t you played with the LUMIX S5 yet?
I use touch screen Af the most. Never an issue, I pick what I want not the camera. it is on AF-area continuous. This is on the older Z6.
I'm still in the Z6, absolute love.
Manny you did a great job showing the issues with the auto area. It’s the reason why i sold my z6 for an a7riii

Hey, Manny! Great review. Did you use the adapter with older dslr lenses at all? I'm wondering how well the autofocus works (specifically with eye AF for photo & video)
Hello pal would recommend the Nikon Z7 II portraiture and wedding that’s the direction I am heading thanks
I heard many bad comments on the Z6II because of its AF system ... would you confirm ?? Or did the latest firmware update fix that ???
