Chu Ching-wu is the guys name and he discovered it in 1987, it's YBa2Cu3O7 (I assume that's what's used here at least) and is a warm superconductor, so that means it's cooled to the temperature of liquid nitrogen as opposed to liquid helium (which is what was being used since the 1911)... Granted, that's a difference between 77K and 4K critical temperature, making it way less expensive... Nowadays, this stuff is used for things like MRI's Meanwhile walther meissner discovered this effect as a result of the superconductor blocking magnetic field lines from reaching from one pole to the other, levitating so that the field can be shared by the poles; because the superconductor has no resistance, circulating currents are induced to produce magnetic fields that cancel out the ones from the magnet, causing the net magnetic flux to be zero and allowing the magnet to levitate. Here, a perfect diamagnet is created by aligning the poles from the permanent magnet and the electromagnet created by the super conductor, so they are attractive yet repulsive So yeah they were probably pretty stoked over they're paychecks
@David Roberts its a compliment. Its like looking at bike or skateboard stunt and say that its a crazy shit or something. And yes, mindfuck, because you have to first be able to imagine, think and comprehend the relationship between supercooling and electromagnetism, apply it to math n physics and then develop it in real life.

iocopoco maioco Yes!!!! I was thinking you could even hide the rails in the street. Or make a suspended monorail that has no visible mechanism to hang from the ceiling or wall.
Wouldn't the liquid nitrogen evaporate eventually because the item would be hotter than the liquid nitrogen, creating a pocket of nitrogen gas around it?
The laws of physics say that it'll just form a pocket of nitrogen gas around the object. It's why sometimes pools of water or oil on a hot pot/pan turn into little marbles and seem like they're rolling. Depending on the temperate of the object, however, it would not last very long, and would end up freezing, but it'd defrost very quickly because the surrounding temperature is much hotter.
Well the superconductors that result in this levitation allowed mri machines to be much less expensive as a result of only needing to be cooled by liquid nitrogen as opposed by liquid helium
There’s nothing “quantum” about this: it’s just that lenz’s law states that any change in magnetic flux through a conductive loop will create a current that will create a magnetic field that will cause a force oriented against it’s source. So the magnetic flux doesn’t change, because if it did it would create ideally infinite eddy currents in a superconductor. So the superconductor stays where it is
Absolutely fascinating! I could play with this all day! I'd think up various obstacles to create a kind of rollercoaster track where I could almost get a perpetual motion. A never ending, constant action/reaction affect except for one problem... When the temperature of the superconductor goes up, quantum flux tubes disintegrate... Perhaps the other fascinating characteristic of superconductors is the way they will maintain ANY position in a given space. 15 degrees or 35, 40, 65 92, 07, etc., etc. ANY angle as if it were a spinning gyroscope. If you are gonna trash religion, trash religion in general, not a particular one. For better or worse, its been part of your western culture for almost two millenia. The one established on 7th century CE wasnt.
JackManic1984 it is that the object's resistance depends on it's temperature (see: electricity) and basically super conductor has zero resistance, hence 'super conductor'.
If the liquid nitrogen was contained in the middle of an insulated superconductor with a device to extract the 78% nitrogen in the air and condense it one could maintain the quantum locking/levitation state above magnets. One only then needs to synchronize entrain the locking state to earths magnetic field and one could remove the permanent magnet rails from the equation. (Thought experiment I have not proven this.)
As I understand some cooling effects they are created as the gas is decompressed. I certainly consider there would need to be a power source here juicing the whole system. The lift to weight ratio her makes me think it could be worth the structure a quick net search and I can see that supercooling can now be done on a micro machine scale. Again the end result just needs to be super cooled superconductor so perhaps there are more efficient pathways.
The main problem isn't cooling the nitrogen, that's the 'easy' part. The problem is with how weak Earth's magnetic field is. The field manages to affect individual particles and ions (solar wind), not much more. There is also the fact that the field isn't uniform in space and unchanging in time.
Perhaps an augmented EM field generated and projected from the device. There is also the principle of entrainment and resonance that may be useful in taking advantage of the natural Earth em field. More thought required.
Correct me if Im wrong but it loses velocity as it travels along the ring because though the flux is constant along a magnetic ring theoretically, the realistic factor accounting into the superconductor to lose velocity is due to friction occurring for flux in actuality is 0.99 or so rather than ideal 1?
+Antonio McCoy yeah, its just look like the same to me, i mean.. how the withnesses discribe the alien ships, and i guess maybe they could use the magnetic field of the planet, not just a magnetic railway

lets build a somewhat large magnetic loop in space (removes need of LN2 and air friction), make a capsule with superconductive coating and we have a space slingshot without any power requirement right?
You need energy to make it cold. If it's not cold, it doesn't work.

The vaccum of space is. The many energy-generating objects in it, however, are really, really hot.

the big bang theory should add this in new season

Mono atomic Gold is a super conductor, without the dry ice. I wonder if it would behave the same way ?
Who would dig all that gold
“Monoatomic gold” is a fake material used as a way to brainwash scientifically illiterate people and scam them out of money.
Good job youtube algorithm.. Makes me fascinated with science again
So thats how they fly those UFO´s in sort of way?
Jigglypuff Some day some ufos may use some form of mercury/plasma suspended in a rotating electromagnetic field as it’s frictionless in a similar way to this experiment. Look it up online it’s a very Interesting science theory regardless of wether it’s been applied to create aerial vehicles. But from my reading I suspect it has been attempted at the very least.
@@Teckno77 I will look it up, thank you very much. Have you also seen the documentary "Unacknowledged" yet? You can watch ith here on RUclips or on Netflix. Its very important and I think everyone should have seen it to make yourself a own picture.

they need to get superconductors into the streets
That’s.... a lot harder than you think.

So, why can't we use the magnetic field of Earth already?
That's exactly what I thought, but it's too weak. Maybe one day...
Have they tried to cool the compass needle?
maybe we could fit the roads with super powerful magnets...

Have you seen the way people operate vehicles in two dimensions? Flying cars will never happen.

And yet we still don't have flying cars!!
That would be a nightmare. Every road would need magnets, you'd need to change the liquid nitrogen in your car. Its just a really bad way to do it
Wouldn't that be cool? Switching gasses/oil for liquid nitrogen? Just saying* XD
@@marcmatinong5366 you would need to change nitrogen EXTREMELY often. You'd also need a proper method of locomotion

I’m a big fan of trains, my grandfather had a very cool train set toy… it would be awesome to have a train track made with magnets and have superconductors move along the tracks in different ways, even upside down lol just a fun idea 💡
i think we just figured out UFO technology..... :P
***** yhe, if only my mom would let me buy that amount of liquid nitrogen
Would be possible if they could somehow compensate for the Earth's weak magnetic field.
unon unown what if equal magnets were above and below it?
unon unown Thats the part that needs to be figured out. How do we minipulate the gravity waves that we are able to move in multiple directions. We have figured out how to stabalise the magnetic field but if we were to build a "ufo" for the purposes of traveling beyond our earth. It be pretty useless if we had to go outside and push the thing
@@MrNitroFingers hhhhh you can make your own >>>your mama should not know about that ;)

This was it cool experiment and thank you for using appropriate music.
Flux tubes? You obviously need a flux capacitor
so ufo is the superconductor and earth is supermagnet

There's probably a v4.7 by now😒
Or it has been patched with new physics update
I've never seen a steaming hot mince pie travelling around in a circle at that velocity before.
So does the superconductor need to be extremely cold or can it be extremely hot and work as well? If so lightsaber possibility.
JackManic1984 No, presently it can't even be room temperature and work, so extremely hot would definitely not work.
JackManic1984 I think high enough temperatures will stop the magnetism altogether
You'd need the nitrogen extracted from the air to be super cooled as well. The Earth's magnetic field is very weak...

Ah Music and Magnetism...
How bioshock infinite islands could float in the sky.
Correct me if Im wrong but it loses velocity as it travels along the ring because though the flux is constant along a magnetic ring theoretically, the realistic factor accounting into the superconductor to lose velocity is due to friction occurring for flux in actuality is 0.99 or so rather than ideal 1?
Air resistance is always a factor when you're in air.
***** Oh thats right. Thank you for the correction.

how do you not do this all day?
so this is how the aliens fly right?:D using the magnetic field of earth^^
+Szabolcs Koren Wow. You are on to something.
+Antonio McCoy yeah, its just look like the same to me, i mean.. how the withnesses discribe the alien ships, and i guess maybe they could use the magnetic field of the planet, not just a magnetic railway
The Earth's magnetic field is much too weak for that.
Maybe they can amplify the effect.
