It's because a group has their own specific style of music (I mean like the group feel, vibe, the group image). When they split the members base on their speciality, they can showcasing more music style without being awkward. But for now, make a sub-unit is more like a marketing strategy. In this case SM wants to enter chinese market again. So they make WayV (10 years ago SM got Chinese market by debuting Super Junior M, but SJ-M is in hiatus now. Then SM debuting EXO-M but no more EXO-M now. So to keep their place on chinese market SM needs a new group that base in China which is WayV now). Yes! someone can finally understand how I feel. I mean i get a lot of hate from my other kpop friends because I am an SM stan. they don't like their music their concept and (i know their company treats their artist bad) but that doesn't mean you should put hate on the artists as well. they always told me to that "there are too many members but they are too well- privileged unlike other groups that started from nothing" and i just don't react anymore.

Subunits also makes it easier for people to get to know NCT as a whole. They can learn names by groups.

Yo bris, a lot of people are also confused as you are, NCT with several sub units is the Newest concept in the Kpop world. As expected, SM is the one who dares to challenge the flow, do extreme and unusual things like this. You might forget, EXO when first debuted was divided into 2 sub units, EXO-K (6 members) and EXO-M (6 members). EXO-K focused on the Korean market, singing Korean songs while EXO-M focused on the Chinese masses, singing the same songs as EXO-K and speaking Mandarin. But it was before unfortunately, 3 of EXO-M members left the group, because of that since 2016 there were no more EXO-K and EXO-M, only 1 named EXO group, even though on each album they still produced Mandarin songs for the Chinese market. So NCT concept is basically an extension of EXO sub unit concept years ago. Later, I'm sure this will expand with a lot of sub units per country, such as there are rumors there will be NCT-Thailand, NCT-Vietnam, NCT-Japan .... etc. This concept is really smart and fresh. imagine they would sing songs with various languages, various members with different ethnic and promotion would be carried out in that country directly so that it would be very possible for cultural exchanges. The letter "C" on NCT stand for "Culture", So literally, SM wants everyone in the world loving music, exchanging and influencing culture as one united, imagine how big NCT fandom in the future.
if you are a business economy expert, you can certainly estimate the financial benefits of this sub unit. Like if one day NCT did concerts in different countries. For example NCT 127 concerts in the USA, NCT U in Japan, NCT Way-V in Hong Kong, NCT Dream in Korea. In just one day's concert, SM got like 4x multiple profit...only come from 1 group ; NCT. So, Neo Culture Technology (NCT) concept is very interesting, even though now ppl still in shock with this system, but I'm sure in the future this system will become a trend, as usual .... SM has been criticized for their treatment of non-Korean artists, using them as objects to gain profit from the Chinese market. So, hopefully WayV as a Chinese subgroup will be treated better and given more artistic freedom, and possibly showing some progress in the K-pop market. Seriously though, SM Entertainment has had 6 lawsuits from artists, which is unheard of in the Korean market, for various reasons ranging from discrimination to abuse.
I do want to point out that this was a couple of years ago and I would like to say that as of recent years SM has really stepped up the game and has visibly put in effort for their artists. All of Jonghyun's album proceeds went to his family who donated it to a music cause. Nowadays, most of the idols under SM are a lot happier than they were back then. They're vocal about being happy or being able to do what they want musically. And I think through SM station, which was made in recent years, it gives ALL their artists solo and outside-company opportunities, which is what every idol wants. I do hope they're being treated well and healthy and happy, and although we can't always see things from the outside, you can clearly see the different in 2019 and from 2015, which was their most recent lawsuit. In NCT's case, their concept of splitting into different subunits is in one way meant to showcase different sides within one group but also like you said "targeting different markets". Like for an example, members in NCT U are added according to style and concept of the comeback, the NCT 127 unit is based in Seoul which means it targets primarily the Korean market but also the American and Japanese market, and the NCT Dream unit is meant to target younger audiences or any other audience which enjoys their style. Their plan for the future is global domination with different units based in different parts of the world, WayV for China, 127 for Korea, and also rumored are Vietnam etc. Their concept will probably make more sense to people after it gradually evolves into what it actually is meant to be. Members join units according to the concept of the unit itself, but in the end it all comes back to NCT as a whole. Hope this helps :) But in other groups' cases I think it's just to show different sides or grow apart from their primary concept in the original unit while not leaving the group. Like for an example, Pristin originally have a cute concept, but to have a girl crush concept within the group, they had it in Pristin V only with members they think suit the concept. Because not everyone fits every concept and units like these give different opportunities for members to showcase their skills without leaving the group or other side/solo activities.
Bless the Chinese unit of NCT, I see the vision I see WayV. The units mean all the members can have collaborations in programs, music, tours. For example there are artist that want to have activities with other groups however it is hard for them to have them cause they are from totally different groups. However with the NCt system anyone can have a collaboration cause they are under the same group name. Plus the group NCT can be always be active that way

When Super Junior was created, it was originally designed on this same concept of unlimited members. SuJu fans weren't aware of that concept from the outset, so they eventually boycotted and convinced SM to stop adding members. SM learned a few lessons from that experience and designed the sub-unit design. NCT's main concept is incorporating cultures. Each sub-unit targets a separate culture. Dream are the kids. U have an older sound. WayV will enter the highly profitable Chinese market. Each NCT member has the opportunity to choose which sub-units they want to participate in. By creating one large group, they also save on costs by housing the group together, rather than renting space for each individual team. It also make good use of fandom power, because a single large fandom has more purchasing power than several smaller fandoms. When a member belongs to more than one sub-unit, that person's fans will buy albums for all of the units he is in. The on it concept also allows the members to form their own mini-teams as they mature and want to express their own musical tastes, without having to go solo and travel alone(think SuJu D&E or EXO CBX).
So NCT is like the new future, their concept is really hard at first but it's really good, because with splitting into different sub units you can have the same group but different concepts and different style of music like the difference between NCT 127 that are more hip hop based kinda. and NCT Dream with their upbeat positive energetic music, and for NCT U they can pull off any song concept without any problem since the members aren't fixed. not only that but also the difference in languages, like WayV they're a Chinese sub unit so they will mainly promote in China and of course their songs will be in Chinese. There's also a rumor that SM will create a Japanese unit in the future. all this helps NCT to gain more audience. There are different advantages like the military service won't affect the group, even if members of 127 go to military, SM can just put the members that are left in NCT U or a new sub unit and promote them... also NCT has an unlimited amount of members I'm sure you already know that so every year I guess they add new members. in 2018 Lucas, Jungwoo, Kun all joined NCT. This year, XiaoJun, Hendery and Yangyang joined. so WayV has 7 members, Lucas NCT U Kun NCT U Winwin NCT 127 NCT U Ten NCT U XiaoJun, Hendery, Yangyang (New SM rookies) so after all NCT is one group that's becoming more and more diverse.

NCT is a concept from SM, and it works like this; You have an unlimited number of members from which you can pick specific members who are the best match to certain songs. If it's a rap-song, you pick the best rappers from the group(like NCT U Yestoday MV),if focused on dancing the best dancers are picked(Baby Don't Stop MV). So members are put together to perform diffrent musical genres in the best way.

Breaking up into units can help the whole group's popularity branch out to more countries. Since theres alot of members now (21) and the theme is a international rotating group they gotta get units for each country. The 3 new members are (Xiaojun, Hendery & Yangyang-German) theres alot of units so every member of the whole group gets a chance in China, Murica, Korea & Japan
by splitting the main group into separate subgroups, the members are able to try different concepts as well as allow certain members to shine more. for example, if vocal line members get more of a chance to shine in one subgroup, dance line or rap line members will get a chance to shine in another subgroup. for nct specifically, in the beginning especially, there was a very distinct different between nct u/nct 127 and nct dream. however, when they all come into one group (ex. nct 2018) they can show one united front/concept. of course it has its drawbacks, but if you really put the time into knowing each member and seeing the special pieces of them it’s a valuable experience ☺️☺️

I'm late but generally speaking making subunits in groups gives them opportunity to try new concepts that don't fit the general concept of the original group. Subunits are there to provide kind of a new face of the group, new images with new concepts depending on the subunit, and we, fans can see a new side of each members. In NCT though there's more than just new concepts there's litterally a whole system that links all the subunits together it's quite complex to explain but that's that.

In my opinion, sub units happen for many reasons. To cater to different markets, different sounds, different things. Each sub unit in any group can have a different purpose. They have separate releases and different music concepts but then can go back to the regular group. Some groups have them, some don’t.
I believe they keep adding sub units because NCT keeps bringing in new members like they always add more people to make up NCT sooo basically it will never end and they keep graduating like Mark graduated from NCT Dream
Actually I really like the units idea in any group. Because it brings the best sides of people who's more capable at sth. For example a dance unit brings out the best dancers in that group, or a vocal unit brings out the best voices in that group...I really love hiw they get to shine with this little units in a big group 😁💚
I just recently became an NCTzen, but base on my research... NCT is a kpop group that can provide fresh, unique and sophisticated genre of music with an unlimited number of members that is divided into sub-units based on age or concept... The reason for this(just a theory tho) is probably because SM wants to create a group that can live on from one generation to the next starting from this one and that it will give opportunity to the members to be exposed in different aspects of style in music artistry which is an important piece in creating music that will last... SM plans not only in creating legends(TVXQ, BoA, Shinee, Girls' Generation, Super Junior, EXO, & RV) but also a legacy that could surpass barriers not only in music but also in style, art and possibly age...
They're utilizing sub units for nct because the full group is so big so it's easier to break them up. Kpop in general does subunits more or less just to throw something new at fans and maybe give individual members more spotlight since it's easier to divide a song between 3 people than it is 7+
The whole unit thing for NCT, in particular, is their concept. As you know. It's a neverending group with members from all over the globe. Each unit is directed at a different audience etc. For the 'Group' I think you are referring to, you could call the rap line a 'unit' when it comes to their music. It is basically collabs within the group but considered units because they make music together regularly. However, it's more common for units in larger groups. The only exception is SVT and their units, catering for different specialities.
The concept of the NCT units is to spread NCT all over the world and have them in different parts, like 127 is based in Seoul (but debuted in the US with regular), and now wayV is the Chinese group that will be based in China. SM’s plan is to not only have groups cater to different people (age group wise and music wise) but to make NCT known everywhere and have a group for every part of the world. the teasers were released on the SMTOWN channel. and wayV has 3 new members, hendery yangyang and xiaojun. so NCT’s total member number is 21. and it will keep expanding

The letter "C" on NCT stand for "Culture", So literally, SM wants everyone in the world loving music, exchanging and influencing culture as one united, imagine how big NCT fandom in the future.
if you are a business economy expert, you can certainly estimate the financial benefits of this sub unit. Like if one day NCT did concerts in different countries. For example NCT 127 concerts in the USA, NCT U in Japan, NCT Way-V in Hong Kong, NCT Dream in Korea. In just one day's concert, SM got like 4x multiple profit...only come from 1 group ; NCT.
So, Neo Culture Technology (NCT) concept is very interesting, even though now ppl still in shock with this system, but I'm sure in the future this system will become a trend, as usual .... SM always creates trends, not follow the trend. ^^
SM has been criticized for their treatment of non-Korean artists, using them as objects to gain profit from the Chinese market. So, hopefully WayV as a Chinese subgroup will be treated better and given more artistic freedom, and possibly showing some progress in the K-pop market. Seriously though, SM Entertainment has had 6 lawsuits from artists, which is unheard of in the Korean market, for various reasons ranging from discrimination to abuse.
Also, I would probably expect that they seperate to cater to different markets and to showcase different talents through the groups.
They are debuting sometime in January, after their Dream Launch videos.
I do want to point out that this was a couple of years ago and I would like to say that as of recent years SM has really stepped up the game and has visibly put in effort for their artists. All of Jonghyun's album proceeds went to his family who donated it to a music cause. Nowadays, most of the idols under SM are a lot happier than they were back then. They're vocal about being happy or being able to do what they want musically. And I think through SM station, which was made in recent years, it gives ALL their artists solo and outside-company opportunities, which is what every idol wants. I do hope they're being treated well and healthy and happy, and although we can't always see things from the outside, you can clearly see the different in 2019 and from 2015, which was their most recent lawsuit. I think their last lawsuits are most because rejected projects in China...with ex-member of exo mostly, of course all its rumours but went they got big the rain of offers come too but they still active promoting their big hit and their first tour
For kris, after he left he sang a song in a Chinese movie and the director wanted to cast him before... but that didn't happen and was right for sm because their first years active promoting and filming in China takes a lot of time
But now with this groups in China will be the best their own team working bases in China getting all there, a new big start for sm and the boys

In NCT's case, their concept of splitting into different subunits is in one way meant to showcase different sides within one group but also like you said "targeting different markets". Like for an example, members in NCT U are added according to style and concept of the comeback, the NCT 127 unit is based in Seoul which means it targets primarily the Korean market but also the American and Japanese market, and the NCT Dream unit is meant to target younger audiences or any other audience which enjoys their style. Their plan for the future is global domination with different units based in different parts of the world, WayV for China, 127 for Korea, and also rumored are Vietnam etc. Their concept will probably make more sense to people after it gradually evolves into what it actually is meant to be. Members join units according to the concept of the unit itself, but in the end it all comes back to NCT as a whole. Hope this helps :) But in other groups' cases I think it's just to show different sides or grow apart from their primary concept in the original unit while not leaving the group. Like for an example, Pristin originally have a cute concept, but to have a girl crush concept within the group, they had it in Pristin V only with members they think suit the concept. Because not everyone fits every concept and units like these give different opportunities for members to showcase their skills without leaving the group or other side/solo activities.

Bless the Chinese unit of NCT, I see the vision I see WayV. The units mean all the members can have collaborations in programs, music, tours. For example there are artist that want to have activities with other groups however it is hard for them to have them cause they are from totally different groups. However with the NCt system anyone can have a collaboration cause they are under the same group name. Plus the group NCT can be always be active that way

When Super Junior was created, it was originally designed on this same concept of unlimited members. SuJu fans weren't aware of that concept from the outset, so they eventually boycotted and convinced SM to stop adding members. SM learned a few lessons from that experience and designed the sub-unit design. NCT's main concept is incorporating cultures. Each sub-unit targets a separate culture. Dream are the kids. U have an older sound. WayV will enter the highly profitable Chinese market. Each NCT member has the opportunity to choose which sub-units they want to participate in. By creating one large group, they also save on costs by housing the group together, rather than renting space for each individual team. It also make good use of fandom power, because a single large fandom has more purchasing power than several smaller fandoms. When a member belongs to more than one sub-unit, that person's fans will buy albums for all of the units he is in. The on it concept also allows the members to form their own mini-teams as they mature and want to express their own musical tastes, without having to go solo and travel alone(think SuJu D&E or EXO CBX).
So NCT is like the new future, their concept is really hard at first but it's really good, because with splitting into different sub units you can have the same group but different concepts and different style of music like the difference between NCT 127 that are more hip hop based kinda. and NCT Dream with their upbeat positive energetic music, and for NCT U they can pull off any song concept without any problem since the members aren't fixed. not only that but also the difference in languages, like WayV they're a Chinese sub unit so they will mainly promote in China and of course their songs will be in Chinese. There's also a rumor that SM will create a Japanese unit in the future. all this helps NCT to gain more audience. There are different advantages like the military service won't affect the group, even if members of 127 go to military, SM can just put the members that are left in NCT U or a new sub unit and promote them...
also NCT has an unlimited amount of members I'm sure you already know that so every year I guess they add new members. in 2018 Lucas, Jungwoo, Kun all joined NCT. This year, XiaoJun, Hendery and Yangyang joined. so WayV has 7 members,

if you've been a sm stan long enough, grasping the concept of nct comes easy. nct is basically the summation of all of sm's past attempts at subunits/branching out into other markets/taking over the world. like they finally refined the recipe into creating the ultimate group 😅

NCT is a concept from SM, and it works like this; You have an unlimited number of members from which you can pick specific members who are the best match to certain songs. If it's a rap-song, you pick the best rappers from the group(like NCT U Yestoday MV),if focused on dancing the best dancers are picked(Baby Don't Stop MV). So members are put together to perform diffrent musical genres in the best way.

Likely to have more and more members in the future to have more sububnites throughout the countries I guess. I agreed this is confusing and this is a Contributing factor why Kpop fans are still sleeping on NCT (unlimited members and many subunits). I do hope SM will focus more on existing members (fair line distribution, screentime, etc.. ) instead of keep adding new members

Breaking up into units can help the whole group's popularity branch out to more countries. Since theres alot of members now (21) and the theme is a international rotating group they gotta get units for each country. The 3 new members are (Xiaojun, Hendery & Yangyang-German) theres alot of units so every member of the whole group gets a chance in China, Murica, Korea & Japan

by splitting the main group into separate subgroups, the members are able to try different concepts as well as allow certain members to shine more. for example, if vocal line members get more of a chance to shine in one subgroup, dance line or rap line members will get a chance to shine in another subgroup. for nct specifically, in the beginning especially, there was a very distinct different between nct u/nct 127 and nct dream. however, when they all come into one group (ex. nct 2018) they can show one united front/concept. of course it has its drawbacks, but if you really put the time into knowing each member and seeing the special pieces of them it’s a valuable experience ☺️☺️
They have units because they can do their promotions,schedules and work around the world in an easy way.

I'm late but generally speaking making subunits in groups gives them opportunity to try new concepts that don't fit the general concept of the original group. Subunits are there to provide kind of a new face of the group, new images with new concepts depending on the subunit, and we, fans can see a new side of each members. In NCT though there's more than just new concepts there's litterally a whole system that links all the subunits together it's quite complex to explain but that's that.

In my opinion, sub units happen for many reasons. To cater to different markets, different sounds, different things. Each sub unit in any group can have a different purpose. They have separate releases and different music concepts but then can go back to the regular group. Some groups have them, some don’t.
I believe they keep adding sub units because NCT keeps bringing in new members like they always add more people to make up NCT sooo basically it will never end and they keep graduating like Mark graduated from NCT Dream
Actually I really like the units idea in any group. Because it brings the best sides of people who's more capable at sth. For example a dance unit brings out the best dancers in that group, or a vocal unit brings out the best voices in that group...I really love hiw they get to shine with this little units in a big group 😁💚

I just recently became an NCTzen, but base on my research... NCT is a kpop group that can provide fresh, unique and sophisticated genre of music with an unlimited number of members that is divided into sub-units based on age or concept...
The reason for this(just a theory tho) is probably because SM wants to create a group that can live on from one generation to the next starting from this one and that it will give opportunity to the members to be exposed in different aspects of style in music artistry which is an important piece in creating music that will last... SM plans not only in creating legends(TVXQ, BoA, Shinee, Girls' Generation, Super Junior, EXO, & RV) but also a legacy that could surpass barriers not only in music but also in style, art and possibly age...

They're utilizing sub units for nct because the full group is so big so it's easier to break them up. Kpop in general does subunits more or less just to throw something new at fans and maybe give individual members more spotlight since it's easier to divide a song between 3 people than it is 7+
basically all of this that they are doing it's because of money, but in a "beautiful" way to say that it's to become global

The whole unit thing for NCT, in particular, is their concept. As you know. It's a neverending group with members from all over the globe. Each unit is directed at a different audience etc.
For the 'Group' I think you are referring to, you could call the rap line a 'unit' when it comes to their music. It is basically collabs within the group but considered units because they make music together regularly.
However, it's more common for units in larger groups. The only exception is SVT and their units, catering for different specialities.
The concept of the NCT units is to spread NCT all over the world and have them in different parts, like 127 is based in Seoul (but debuted in the US with regular), and now wayV is the Chinese group that will be based in China. SM’s plan is to not only have groups cater to different people (age group wise and music wise) but to make NCT known everywhere and have a group for every part of the world. the teasers were released on the SMTOWN channel. and wayV has 3 new members, hendery yangyang and xiaojun. so NCT’s total member number is 21. and it will keep expanding
