That spread is absolutely gorgeous! I love the Gansai Tambi watercolors and it was great to see you work some more with them. I taped very thin magnets to the back of mine and have them stored in a large, thin tin. (I did the same with my regular watercolors.) I love being able to grab a handful of colors out of the tin to work or travel with. The magnets make them easy to move around but also keep them secure.
@@KatieMoodyThe magnets I use are 12mm x 1mm (flat circular discs). I just used a piece of regular scotch/clear tape over the magnet to secure it to the bottom of the watercolor pan, and it works great. 😊
"Verdant and lush" exactly. One of your most beautiful pieces, IMO. All those colors are yummy and you did a magical job of making them play nicely together. 😊
I'm so glad more people are starting to appreciate Kuretake Gansai Tambi more. I've had my paints for a few years and I still get consistent results. I also got the newer pastel and Art Nouveaux set to add to the 36 standard colors and Starry Colors I already had. I love your swatches and the painting, well done!
Thx Katie for swatching out this particular paint set for us all - so many gorgeous colours which I can definitely see you getting much use out of! Like you ~ I’m not keen on deep royal purples, so would probably swap them out for more muted browns, sienna type colours… I’d love to get this set, but will have to wait for now as I’ve collected so many other beautiful watercolours that I should be using first! However I do already have the ‘Starry Nights’ gold set & one lonely lil ‘Malachite’ pan - I LOVE this colour too - so much so, that I’ve got a set of x20 metal vintage school chairs which my dad helped me paint in this particular colour many years ago, bless him - they look gorgeous for entertaining outside! 💚🩵🤍
Thank you so much! I really don't reach for purples often, lilacs are definitely more likely but I definitely agree that swapping out for some other browns would work super well for me in this palette too! Oh wow!! I've always loved those vintage school chairs, and I bet they look so joyful in that gorgeous colour too! Love your style Fab, we can all do with more colour in our lives!! 😄
@ You should ask your dad to keep an eye out for you at the auctions ~ that’s where I got my lot of 20 vintage chairs from for next to nothing, the cans of paint probably cost more!! 😃🤪 They stack up easily in the shed & come out for outdoor entertainment! Think France/Mediterranean courtyard long table lunches, balmy evening dinners vibe! That pop of colour against garden greenery looks amazing & sets the ‘mood’…! Excuse the pun…😉🤭… 🤩👌🏼💚🩵🤍
Look forward to yr shares every sunday as well as demos... many gotta-have-it investments seem intimidating... a #1 round has been patiently waiting to be included while ii've discovered the silent pans, pens & papers seem to sigh in relief as ii get over feeling intimidated with where to start & what to use... you helped me realize ii love sketchbook art paired w/my forever love of pen & ink & watercolor patterns... gradually arting larger than zentangle tiles with yr exuberance & dive bomber use of media layers makes me so happy, if only it were march already so yr book would stay open on my desk.... ty katie, really lovely!! ❤
Thanks so much Judy 🥰 Totally understand that feeling of overwhelm! But so pleased to hear that my videos have helped, and that things can be built up both in scale and layers 😄 I am counting down the days til March for sure! 🧡
Katie this is gorgeous! I love that you’re getting into watercolor more. I wanted to tell you that I was in a creative block for most of this year and wasn’t able to paint much due to being sick a lot, but after I discovered your videos I bought a bunch of tombows and it got me making work again and I’m sooooo happy. Thank you for being you! Now that I’m getting better and getting more energy I’ve been painting more but tombows have become an important part of my process. I love that I can use them when I’m in bed on days that are a struggle. I’m super excited to receive your book. I wish you every good thing.
Thanks so much Trinec, what a wonderful comment to read 🥹 So glad the brush pens have helped and allowed you to continue creating! They're so handy for grabbing when we want to be quick and don't need a proper desk to create 😄 I'm so glad to hear you're getting better and hope things continue to improve for you! 💜💜💜
This painting is gorgeous Katie, the colors are beautiful and vibrant. Truthfully, I am amazed every time I watch you paint. You jump all over the place making random brush marks that in the beginning make no sense. But I just sit back, I wait and watch knowing soon enough that I’ll see what you see in you mind as it comes together. ❤
Thank you so much for this video. I'll be receiving this same set for Christmas. It'll be my first step up from a cheap beginner set I've started with for about a year and I'm excited to progress. Your description and swatching are very helpful and the beautiful scene you've painted really exemplifies the vibrancy and range of the colours. As a beginner I realise I'm guilty of overworking and using far too much paint.
Aaah how exciting, and not too long to wait before you can play with all these lovely colours! I think these are such a great stepping stone from beginner watercolours so I hope you love them as much as I do 🥰 So glad the video was helpful, thank you for your kind comment! 🧡
What a great video! Really enjoyed the swatching and watching you paint! You really took advantage of that palette and created a lovely painting. Thanks for sharing! See you next week; have a lovely week, Katie.
Gorgeous colors on this wonderful painting. One of my favorites of yours. I’m looking forward to getting your book, Katie, as I am working on what I call, “sketchbook for sketchbook’s sake."
I love kuretake paints, they're creamy, vibrant, easy to use, and they come in these full pans. I found an art shop in Porto, Portugal, that sold the full range in individual pans. It was wonderful! Thank you for this video, swatching the set and your lovely painting. I was pleased to hear you'd be doing more watercolour work. As a hobbyist sketch/ painter I love using watercolours (pen and watercolour), and only ever use white gouache. I have too many watercolours to start buying other types of paint, at this stage in my life! Thanks for showing how you painted this love picture. M (UK)
Aaah thank you so much for your lovely comment 🥹 I totally agree, so creamy! And love that you found a shop that sells them individually in Portugal! There's a site based here in the UK that does too (buddlycrafts.com!), though I do wish I could find a local shop to see them in person! I think I'm going to end up with too many watercolours as well if this becomes an addiction 😅
The Gansai Tambi were the watercolours that made me enjoy watercolours more, we always had a difficult relationship 😅 that spread is outstanding Katie 😍
Lovely video as usual Katie, and brilliant painting in the end. I haven't tried the 'normal' colours, but I know the 'gem' and 'charcoal' sets are brilliant. I found with the gem colours that it's best to pre-wet your pans and spend a moment to let it pick up & mix before using them. Then you'll get a lot more of the shimmer. It may be the same with your three metallics. I do like the look of some of those blues & purples and the Indian Red.
Thanks so much Tim! Oh that is a great tip! They're definitely more shimmery once dried but I think having them activate for a bit in water will make them much easier to pick up from the pan! Thank you for sharing 😊
Beautiful painting!! Love seeing your process. Very inspiring. Can you share the brand of your brushes? Love how well they do lines. Thank you Katie ❤!
Thanks so much Mariana 🥰 I used an Etchr size 12 round brush which is fab for a sharp tip, and a larger size 14 by the brand Artisti though I can't find much about that brand online (I think it was a random one from my auction haul!) I also recommend the Daler Rowney Graduate brushes too ☺️

Thank you so much Nancy Jane 🥰

I have discovered that the colours are curated vertically. In other words, colours in vertical line seem to work well together.
Oh what a great tip Ann, thank you so much! That makes a lot of sense as Japanese is written vertically!
Very pretty!
Thank you! 😊
I love a nice orangey red
I always struggle with using reds and oranges but loooove seeing it in other artists work! 😍
Wow
Thank you so much 🥹

Beautiful painting!! Love seeing your process. Very inspiring. Can you share the brand of your brushes? Love how well they do lines. Thank you Katie ❤!

❤
Thanks for watching Anne! 💜
Katie, would you use Neocolour II instead of watercolour pencil?
Absolutely! They're great for pops of vibrancy and finishing details, though harder to get smaller marks as they are a bit chunkier than pencils ☺️
@@KatieMoody, true, thank you!!
What brand of brushes did you use? Thank you!!
One is an Etchr round brush size 12, the other was a size 14 by the brand Artisti - though I can't find much about that brand online!
