Description: Since Putin visited North Korea this year, here's a video about one of the lesser known friendships between Romania's dictator, Nicolae Causescu & Kim Il Sung of North Korea. Where both created an alliance with one another in the middle of the cold war & based their dictatorships on each others' communist dystopian countries

Mf went to north korea and unironically thought of it as an example to emulate.
Yes, if you are a leader with totalitarian ambitions, then North Korea is absolutely the example to emulate.
What Ceausescu did not take into consideration are actual racial differences between Romanians and Koreans, which were very much real factors in him not being able to emulate the system of total obedience that is present in North Korea, but also a substrate of East Asian culture.
Meanwhile Enver Hoxha went to North Korea and said they were NOT HARDCORE ENOUGH 😂😂😂

Between 1971 and 1989, Romania was the Eastern European North Korea. Glad we made it out.
You forget Albania
No, Romania was better than Albania, Enver Hoxha Albania was poorest country in Europe while Romania was something like a national communist dictatorship where the leader respected workers rights but not human rights and his knowledge about economics was questionable, every Romanian I met told me that his wife was 10 times worse, but whatever happened Albania was still the north korea of Europe, Romania looked like fun and interesting place to live in compared to Hoxhaist Albania

Greetings from... (living ironically in) Romania! 🇷🇴
Well documented post, I've been seeing it with a smile... Thank you!
Honestly Ceausescu never managed to reach north korean levels of totalitarianism.
In my opinion he started his totalitarian project way to late in his life and in his political career .
That level of personality cult also required a level of state atheism that was simply not present in Romanian state and society. It is a known fact that even if he was an atheist, Ceausescu sliped many times into religion tradition and superstition.
And he also failed to bring the Securitate and the rest of the socialist upper echelon into absolute compliance.
Not state atheism! A state religion centred around a dynastic family. People need to worship a god and for Ceausescu the problem was he didn’t have the pedigree to be a god. The Kim family in North Korea perfected the formula.
It's important to note that Romania still has good relationships with North Korea and hosts foreign exchange student programs. I can confirm this for engineering schools, but I assume it probably happens elsewhere.
While we aren't buddy buddy like before, Romania is probably the Western state with the best relation to North Korea even if it isn't much.
Additionally, Romania is still great friends with Vietnam as their former (I think he quite recently) PM did Construction University in Bucharest and claims those were the best years of his life.
All in all even with the sudden shift from communism to somewhat functional democracy, Romania kept relations with most communist countries and we still consider them friends and want them to do well.
Wow, I didn't know that about Vietnam's ex-PM! 🙂 That's so cool
I never saw any North Korean here in Romania, never.
we get mostly phillipinos and middle easterners. The later probably because Romania is what France would look if it went for an eastern vibe while keeping christian. OR because Socialist Republic Romania had good relations with the middle east and some african nations at the time in its quest to endlessly troll the SU, hence why SU and USA shook hands on both giving Ceausescu the option to leave his brother in charge right before the s*storm of '89 started.
@@ekesandras1481 It's not like there are many. We had 2 or 3 in our whole University year. So like out of several thousands of students. The thing about Ceaușescu is that he was a nationalist and wanted Romania to be completely independent. While he was bad guy (because he was a communist and a dictator), it's his entourage and the rest of the communist party that did most of the damage in Romania and were the most tyranic. Ceaușescu was great at foreign relations and was able to make deals with anyone and mediate between anyone while also boosting Romania's economy, sort of like a communist Donald Trump if that makes sense. However, unlike Trump, Ceaușescu was still a tyrant and a communist which makes him a bad guy nonetheless.
