      I'm not disagreeing with you. However, this is just one of many "performances" of The Boxer, rather than a "version". What's incredible is the masterful artistic expression and energy that flows through and out of Paul during every performance of this song and many of his others. Each performance, if one listens carefully, is an original which is nearly beyond belief. The Boxer is a masterpiece and Paul Simon, in my humble opinion, is the finest singer-song writer that has ever lived. I also believe we will never see/hear a musician of Paul's quality ever again.

      @@liberty9348 I'm really curious as to what's the point of distinguishing between a 'version' and a 'performance', for the purposes of his online comment?
      Nobody, in their right mind, is misunderstanding his point because of the semantic fantasy land that you live in... in fact, many people thing it's moronic to make distinctions of no real difference.
      PS multi-track recordings (which _also_ result from searching for this song, by name) cannot really be considered a 'performance' (in the same way that a movie is not a 'performance' in the way that a Broadway show _is),_ so that word is entirely insufficient in a comparison of multiple forms at the same time -- a catchall descriptor (such as 'version') is therefore superior.

    The secret to their harmonies, is they never try to make it perfect. Sometimes Art is a little late, sometimes Paul is a little early, but they are just masters of their craft, and make it work

    • @justintime42000

      They’re in sync timing-wise on the original recordings. Live they were much freer with the starts and stops but they each knew exactly what the other was going to sing every moment, and even though it may seem like it wasn’t structured, it was all worked out in advance. Art sang counter melodies that were also harmonies to Paul’s melodies often in the opposite direction of Paul’s lead vocal, throughout their catalog. That was a big part of their sound.

    • @JJ-zy3zv
      @JJ-zy3zv 11 месяцев назад

      Yes but they do that on purpose. If you ask them, it’s part of the perfection. They echo and complement each other. The overlaps are deliberate and masterful. Like a conversation

    • @liberty9348
      @liberty9348 10 месяцев назад +1

      Absolutely. In fact, if one were to watch every recording they can of The Boxer and listen carefully, one would realize that every performance is an original which is quite impressive. Paul Simon is the most incredible singer-song writer that has ever existed. We won't be see/hearing any musician of his quality ever again. The Boxer is a masterpiece and showcases Paul's musical genius, as it was written very early in his career (1969). In regard to their harmonies, they are not "trying" to harmonize, but rather are just letting their musical energy flow through them and out of them. Perfection doesn't demand timing and/or effort, it just happens. This is a display of music at its absolute finest form. Something that is extremely rare and I'm pleased I am living in the same era of the living legend that is Paul Simon.

I was about 18 when I saw them live the first time in the 70s now I’m 70 and still listening. But I’m the Grandma that listens to Ac/Dc and Ted Nugent as well.. And i agree that this one sounds even better than the one in the 70's.
    For some people getting old brings great things.

    I think it's ashame that youtube always seems some kind of medium for discussing the material instead of putting down your experience on the subject

    I listened to the Studio recording, original release, first. It was perfect and exactly as I remember it.
    Then I listened to this concert cut of the same song, and it sounded SO SLOW!!! I mean, they're aging (aren't we all), but it was really strange. I tried speeding it up (3 dots menu) to 1.25, and I swear it was exactly the same tempo as the original. I felt bad halfway thru and switched it back. Three seconds later I realized my original idea was the right one, and returned to 1.25 speed! It wasn't too distorted doing this, and I recommend trying it. You might want to listen to the original recording first, you'll see what I mean.
    Still the best Duo ever. Their stuff does not get old or ever sound dated.
