  • Former Health Minister, Victoria Atkins, was called out by the deputy speaker of the house of commons over her behaviour. She made Jonathan Gullis sounds from the front bench and then stood at the dispatch box attempting to challenge the new Secretary of State for DEFRA.

I have never voted Tory, but it is sad to see the Conservative party reduced to this level of mindless hysterical behaviour. Some of the most inept, deranged, shameful, uneducated MP's ever to enter the HoC in my long lifetime. Seriously, it's very sad and not good for democracy.

    • @nichotto

And yet folks on their constituencies voted for them on July 4th. You have to wonder why so many in our country, 25%, have such shocking judgement. 14 years of inept government and masterful cronyism and corruption and they think, “ You know what. I want five more years of the same.” As for our Parliament, it needs radical reform and modernisation with all the archaic nonsense binned and a less confrontational circular debating camber perhaps in a new building. I’d like to see a breakdown of what each MP is doing with their time. The idea that someone like Farage can swan off to the USA, or the Johnsons of this world can disappear on lecture tours etc. Let’s start treating it like a professional career rather than like being a member of a golf club with extensive expenses and allowances.

The Deputy Speaker (a Tory!) gave the noisy lot way too much leeway during this speech. He only stood up because, from what it seems, someone nodded a word to him to actually do something. So far the new deputy speakers have been uninspiring and, as you said, look to be asleep. In this new Parliament, if I were speaker, I would have made very clear upon the return of the house that there would be NO WARNING MECHANISM for returning/experienced members - they would face sanction, like not being picked for questions in debates or, in the case of Atkins here, summarily removed from the chamber. Imagine how much more civil the Commons would be, outside of PMQ's at least, if Speakers put their foot down a lot more harshly. The job of the speaker is to maintain order, but its NOT orderly to be shouting down and chuntering the person speaking, regardless of whether or not you agree with them. Raise a point of order or shut up.

It's never been in doubt that she was shite at being an MP, but this is appalling and she should be punished for this. And the speaker should have stepped in way sooner than he did, there was way too much shouting from the sidelines even before she stood up, but he should have told her to get back down as soon as she stood up.

  • @stephenwalker2924

Never seen an opposition MP actually walking up to and standing at the dispatch box in this way before. Definitely against the rules. One can stand up in one's place and speak if the MP speaking has 'given way' - I'm sure frustration got the better of Atkins because she felt she was being denied a right to reply because the Labour MP speaking was not giving way (he was running out of time and needed to complete his statement). But this is being very generous to 'Mad as a Bat' Atkins. She was bang out of order really, and the deputy speaker failed in this job totally. But, not surprised. The H of C is a circus where the only performers on show are clowns, clowns, clowns.

This deputy speaker is Christopher Chope, he is a member of the Conservative Party. First elected in 1983 and lost his seat in 1992, he was then elected as an MP in 1997 and has remained an MP since. His clear lack of experience as a deputy speaker is definitely on display, even so having served in the Commons for such a long time you would think he would have grasped the understanding of how a speaker should act when controlling the house.

Badenoch did a bit of bobbing about too. Perhaps Atkins decided to out-do her. What a despicable display from both of them. If this is how all of them intend “operating” through this parliament, I can’t see them getting back into power until my grandchildren are in their dotage.

"The Right Honourable Lady"? The Tories may be (far) right, but in what universe are ANY Tories "Honourable"? It's in witnessing displays like Atkins' that, whatever else you may think of him, makes you a little nostalgic for John Bercow, who would've stamped down hard on this kind of behaviour from the start.
The Tory party have become the Chimps Tea party that the chimps have disowned as being an embarrassment to the species.

For an opposition MP to move off her bench and to end up leaning on the opposition despatch box is poor form, particularly during a ministerial speech. After 14 years in government the dregs of the Tory Party will have to learn how to behave, and I expect The Speaker not to tolerate this and to rebuke in the strongest possible terms this type of behaviour.

Is Starmer is to deliver in this Parliament, people in positions of power need to be held accountable. Firstly, the deputy speaker must be held to account for not upholding the necessary standards, and then allowed to hold the opposition to account. I am 100% behind Starmer and Labour but without proper governance of the house, the conservatives will bring everyone down to their level
