    God, I hate these comments. I know it's intended as a compliment; but memorization is by far the least impressive aspect of musical performance, and complimenting the fact that somebody (gasp!) MEMORIZED an entire 80 second long piece takes away from the actually incredible stuff, such as the ease with which she plays this (one of the most difficult) etude. It's so easy to get tense in this piece...

    Amazing! I see what she's doing. That's really impressive how she can leave out the inner voice in the right hand, she's masking that perfectly and nobody is noticing! It took me a while to figure out why it sounded so thin. If you don't believe me, observe her right pointer throughout the entire piece. Bravo Valentina !

  • @anonymouslyanonymous5987
    @anonymouslyanonymous5987 4 года назад +5

    Let me explain the difficulty of this number. The chromatic scale is only played with the 3rd, 4th, and 5th fingers. If you know anything about piano, you would know that everyone’s weakest fingers are the 4th and the 5th (ring and pinkie)! It takes years to release all the tensions of those fingers. To play this etude at that speed, your 3rd, 4th, 5th fingers have to move seamlessly as if they were not part of your hand!

    • @nanopopquiz7460
      @nanopopquiz7460 4 года назад +2

      But why should it be played with finger 3 4 and 5? Don't we usually play chromatic scales with finger 123?

    • @anonymouslyanonymous5987
      @anonymouslyanonymous5987 4 года назад +2

      Hans Neddyanto This etude is made to ease the tension of the 4th and the 5th fingers. Your thumb and index finger on your right hand will be playing chords. If you slow down the etude, you will see what I’m talking about. Valentina is just an expert, she plays so fast you don’t even realize that the 3rd 4th and 5th fingers are playing the chromatic scale!

    • @esijeisefijsodf
      @esijeisefijsodf 4 года назад

      Lol, let me amend that, for the vast majority of people the 4th finger is the weakest

    Valentina is one of my favorite pianists, but after studying this etude night and day, and wondering how she gets such a clear sound, I noticed that it's because she's omitting most of the inner voices played by the index finger. Slightly disappointed, but it still sounds beautiful, nonetheless.

Fast cromatic passages acompanied with chords on every semiquaver. And if thats not perplexing enough a chunky left hand to go with it :) - truly a piece of art, And I think maybe the hardest etude in the entire set.

    I would say that this study is dangerous but one must practice slowly and with light hand and flexible wrist. Playing slowly then faster after you have studied it in small increments. Never should one be foolish enough to play it over and over or to injure the hand in the process. I this
    number 4 of opus ten is harder in that it requires equality in the hands and fingers. One does not play the piano with fingers alone. Technique is an integrated of body, mind and motion.

    so true. i am still really on the beginner's level, but it's easier for me to play Bach's Inventions when I am not looking at the music. Sometimes I forget certain parts, and that's when I refer to the music for reference. It's also nice to close your eyes when playing. I think it's cuz I'm such a kinetic learner looking at my hands or the music gets in the way.

    @jaycethepianist I agree. I would say that between this and the "thirds" etude of op.25 we reach a very high level of technical and artistic difficulty.

      @CoobieCube I suggest you check out this video: ruclips.net/video/dRxJ5qq5wS8/видео.html. As you're attempting Etudes I don't have to tell you how important fingering is, this video breaks down the benefits you can take from this etude in a stepped out practice plan.

      It’s been a month since I wrote this comment, and I finally learned this piece. I didn’t 100 percent finish learning this piece, though. The tempo I’m at on this correct day is around 105 BPM

    Believe me, you don't really need the sheet music to play pieces like this one. I also play the piano, and i can tell you that when you reach this level of complexity, the hours and hours of practice just to learn it makes you memorize the piece automatically, and it requires so much concentration that reading the music as you play becomes a distraction. She's not brilliant for playing it by heart, but for her flawless rendition of it!

    A light action might help, but one needs to be prepared to play on heavier actions as well. I think Chopin played on and preferred the Pleyel and that had a lighter touch.

    I would argue that this is a defining Etude in marking the difference between Chopin and Liszt. When you play a "tough" Liszt piece, many times it just "feels" right, things fall naturally in your fingers and hand. This is not at all what I personally experience whenever I start studying a new Chopin Etude: it feels quite awkward in the beginning (and sometimes down to the very end, after months and months of practice!) because it just challenges your hands to adopt weird positions. Like here.

    @ZombiGombaa She plays the sixteenth notes using the 3rd, 4th, and 5th fingers of her right hand, and uses her thumb and index finger to play the lower chords. It's insane.
