- The Commando8 is a new gamepad-style radio from iFlight, which is available in several configs. I've got the 2.4Ghz ExpressLRS version which also has a CC2500 chip and so will run a range of other protocols, more notably FrSky

Great review looks like a good TX for elrs, and the sim is looking awesome CK 👍
Cheers - yes, it's a pretty nice radio which will fly the vast majority of the quad I have
Still using my X-Lite as it's not broken yet. Like these light gamepad style transmitters but they all have at least one shortcoming to make me not want to switch yet. Thanks for the review.
I liked the X-Lite, it was the start of the gamepad style. The plastic on mine has gone all a bit sticky and weird now. I think it's breaking down
Well done and its certainly a Very Detailed Review. I agree with the issue to module change. These days, if your unable to simply snap out one module for another then that's seems a bit messy doesn't it.? Look forward to your other reviews.
Great review looking forward to your Chimera 7” review especially what battery you recommend 😊
The Chimera flew nicely - it feels very substantial in the air, although the battery recommendation will probably be "don't use what I did" I can't afford to buy large lipos or lions for this, so I was using 2 x 1050 6S's in parallel. Which is ok for around 10 minutes of flight, but you don't get the best out of it like this. More to come on this big beast soon though
if it had 4in1+ELRS and a few more switches than just 4, would be pretty good option
Fantastic flying and review, Wayne! Thanks! 😃
I'm definitely looking forward to the review of the 7 incher quad!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Cheers MC - coming soon!
Great review. Btw, I bought the sim for IOS. Just starting to mess with it. What a deal!
Nice - hope you are enjoying it!
It is actually much closer to the JumperTPro than the Zorro when size and looks are comparared.
Even the shoulder switches are similar
Also I think this combo of CC2500 for FrSky and ELRS both inbuilt is the best.
Better than 4in1.
Yess brother true
I didn't have the Jumper, but it does feel quite different to the Zorro in the hands. The Zorro feels much more substantial and is quite a bit heavier as well
So it's got both the ELRS and cc2500 antennas in the plastic rotating case?
That's nice.
Yes - they both use 2.4Ghz at the end of the day, so one antenna to rule them all
hey I have one in elrs 915 and I was wondering how I can switch it to 2.4g to be able to fly miniwoop drones, im pretty new to rc btw. if its just switching the modules do you have any very good recommendations that would fit straight to it, I look on iflight and they have the option to get a different modual but as a option when buying a remote I can't find how to buy the commando 8 2.4 module separately
It is just a case of switching modules. I have the 2.4 ELRS and CC2500 combo, so its less easy to swap, but on the 868/915 version and you have to install the external module bay first. Did yours come with an external module bay? If you take the cover off you should have a set of pins at the bottom. If that's the case then you could get something like the RadioMaster Ranger Micro (as I can't see a way of getting the iFlght 2.4 module seperately either) - which is an excellent 24 ELRS TX and run with that.
Please somebody knows if this controller is working with some ps4 simulator? (Dcl, drl , liftoff)
Sometimes that stick problem its some cable that is making contact inside and pushing the stick litlle bit up
Great idea, but it doesn't seem to be the case here (not that it's possible to actually get inside the radio) I've since managed to increase stick tension to the point where it doesn't jump back up, but it's not quite at the looseness I'd like
Open it up.... the wires from the gimble to main board been a bit too tight on the gimble causes that throttle issue.
I had the exact same issue on a betafpv tx
This seems impossible to open, take all screws out, try and prise the radio apart - doesn't want to know. I'm told that iFlight have a special tool that releases all the clips for it
Hi,
What cable do you use to connect commando 8 to macbook?
I connect via type-C but the joystick is only charging.
After you connect the cable and it goes into charge mode, you have to hold or click and then hold the power button in. It’ll then ask what you want to connect as. I think I cover it in the video but I’m on holiday with limited internet so I can’t say for sure
Well i was under the impression that both the cc2500 and the elrs were internal 😐
That's no good.
So how do we use a higher power external module?
Not a nice implementation.
Me too, but no. It would have been better to have a full external module rather than the half-way house they have. I get the idea, they wanted to use the antenna for CC2500 and ELRS, but that makes the module swapping way more awkward than it needs to be
Hi, thanks for the thorough review. Would you choose this over the Zorro? Can the antenna be switched out for a Moxon or some other high gain antenna? And of course, it doesn't support ELRS 915mhz, right?
It will support 915mhz if you swap the module. Or you can just buy the one with 915mhz
@@crash_lander Thank bro! Yeah, just seen Albert Kim's review....They sent him all the add-ons (modules and receivers|) for the different options, which explains what you mentioned. Thanks again for the feedback🙂
What he said. As to my personal preference - quite a touch one. There's aspects I like of both - the antenna seems better on the Commando, I was getting a better signal at a distance. I'll be using the iFlight in the next few weeks and months so I'll see what else I like/dislike
@@CurryKitten Thanks you!
Hi, I try to update it and put the bind phrase but fails always, I make your same steps... uart and wifi always failed.
Always good to understand how it's failing, can you connect to the wifi network from the radio ok, does the firmware fail to compile or fail to transfer - what are the errors that it fails with, what have you done to investigate so far?
Is there a default arm quad button or do I have to set that manually. If I have to set it manually, how would I do that?
There's no defaults, although you can usually use a wizard to setup on OpenTX, but essentially you need to set your switch to a channel (specifically ch 5 for ELRS) for arming, and also replicate this on your betaflight setup. I go over this in radio setup more generically in this video ruclips.net/video/O1Ea3wljoQs/видео.html&ab_channel=CurryKitten
@@CurryKitten Awesome! Thank you very much.
having issues connecting commando 8 to betaflight. keep getting "no configuration received within 10 seconds, communication failed. any help is greatly appreciated
When you say connecting the Commando8 to Betaflight - can you explain in more detail. Do you mean the FC is connected to Betaflight via USB ?
@@CurryKitten yes that is what I meant. Brand new to betaflight so I’m still a little confised
Any chance youve been able to connect to liftoff? When i open up my controller in steam is says not detected. Not sure how to get around this or if there are other settings needed to connect the controller to Liftoff or Steam. Thanks!
Just tried it... man, I forgot how long levels take to load. Anyway, it all worked fine. What you might not have done is connect it properly as the operation is a bit weird. Turn the radio on, and connect it to USB... at this stage it's just charging. You need to double press and hold the power button like you do when turning it on or off. At this stage, it should prompt you to ask if you want to connect as a joystick or a USB storage device. Once you pick Joystick it should be "seen" by the OS/Steam/Liftoff etc
@@CurryKitten I’m assuming your on windows? I just tried this on my mac with multiple different chords, supposedly you need usb c to usb a and then use an adapter for it to pick it up. I’ll keep trying but looks like it won’t be this easy for mac users unfortunately. If I get an answer I’ll post it here incase anyone else asks!
Edit: Thanks for replying!
@@ryanclineco Nope, I've been exclusively on a Mac for the last 10 years or so. I've got a basic USBA to C cable, no adapter. You do need to make sure you are using a data cable, you'll find there's a lot of charge cables out there missing their data pin. You can actually see how I connect this to my Mac at 10.30 of the video, including the extra power button press
@@CurryKitten great to know. I guess I'll just make sure I order an adapter for the USB-A portion, newer macs dont have usb-a which is probably why it wasnt working for me. As for the wire type, all of mine are from HD usage or DJI wires so I don't know why they wouldn't work but this could again just be the USBC to A issue. I'll give it another shot! Appreciate the replies, gonna download your SIM as well!
nice can you do a video of binding the comando 8 to caddex
caddex, do you mean Caddx?... and then Caddx make mainly cameras so I'm a bit confused, can you elaborate please.
Hey man, this is a great video!
Do you know how to connect the commando 8 to a Mac Book to fly in a simulator?
Yep - if you watch the video, I connect it up to my iMac. What you have to do is power on, then plug it in the USB, and then hold the power button on the radio down and you'll get the prompt to connect it as a joystick/USB storage device. Once you have it connected as a joystick all the sims/etc will see it
@@CurryKitten strange mate.. tried it many times but my Mac book won't recognise it as such...
@CurryKitten hey mate! I made it work... You have to use a usb-a to usb-c cable and then attach a usb-a to usb-c adapter and plug it in... Really stupid but it works!
But now I have the next problem... I've been practicing in the simulator for a couple of days and now suddenly the commando's left stick is totally out of sync... Even though it is down and centred, it thinks that it is pushed to the upper right corner and I can't get it back to normal! I can not even calibrate it because I can not centre it... Have you had this issue with any radio before?
does anyone know if this TX can be used in simulators
Yes - did you watch the video, I connect to a sim and go through how at around 10:30
Bind protek35?
Maybe the screw is not tighten correctly at the back of the radio, that would be why your throttle stick doesn’t go as low as it should.
Was chatting to AndyRC about this and he reckoned there was a sweet spot - a tiny one. By tightening up I've managed to get the throttle to stay all the way down - although the stick tension is more than I'd actually want
@@CurryKitten ok so there’s still an issue but manageable. Great thanks 🙏
how do i connect my frsky to the commando? i tried so many options and it still cant
Well, first off make sure you bought the version of the Commando 8 with the CC2500 chip in it as well, else it won't work. If you have it, then all you should have to do is go to your model setup, change RF type to Internal and then pick FrSkyX as the type with D16/D8 (depends what you are flying) as the Subtype. Then bind it. You may have to do the fine tuning - I'd recommend it. See this video for details ruclips.net/video/IOlwe57lh4c/видео.html
@@CurryKitten thank you man - i am an idiot 🤣 i have the elrs 2.4 version
How do you think about iflight comando after 1 year, man? Thank you 🙏
I mostly use it when I'm flying anything on FrSky (as it's got the internal CC2500 chip in it) and it's still working well. i flew a quad with it recently in the Hawkeye Thumb video
@@CurryKitten sounds great. Thanks
Hi you should add arm/disarm switch in your fpv simulator
Is this just to give a more realistic sim so it mirrors real life better?
@@CurryKitten yes but it would be great if it was optional
Think yours was a defect. Just got the radio yesterday. My gimbal stays all the way down at zero.
Reviewers curse - AndyRC had the same issue on his. Glad it's just a few of these that have the issue
@@CurryKitten 🤣 I guess your right
No trim switches, so that's a hard no from me.
If you are flying planes LOS with no FC in them, then yes - the lack of trims will scupper you
Why not a 4in1? That would make this radio a nobrainer for most people. 🤔😳😭
I expect it would make the radio more expensive. It's a slightly more considered idea I guess, FrSky RX's dominated the FPV space for quite a while so it ticks that box
Commando or Zorro?
There's aspects I like from both to be honest. I like the Commando's antenna more, and it's a smaller form factor and lighter and batteries are bigger. But the gimbals in the Zorro are better (IMO) - and it's cheaper. Dunno - both of them are good, but neither of them quite do it all... at least the way I want them to
@@CurryKitten in terms of quality of the hardware which do you think is more "solid"?
Thank you for the awesome content!
It's a little too early to tell - given that both radios are new and I haven't used either for more than 5 or 6 hours. But given the impossibility of opening the Commando8 if anything does go wrong - I'd have to go with the Zorro if I had to choose.
The radio looks like from the late 80s, like any pc, Atari, Mac, Amiga and so on.
The least Radio to stick with, just because it's that ugly - in my opinion.
The looks and feel won't be to everyone's taste. You either like a gamepad style radio or you don't. I do. However in terms of how it feels in the hand it's much more upto date, feeling very muh similar to an Xbox controller rather than and 80's console
I also like the gamepad style, so you'll see the nirvana and the t-lite as my daily drivers. Even the t-lite sits on the table since it's in my possession.
