This is an explanation from Enduring Word "But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and a distressing spirit from the LORD troubled him.
    a. The Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul: In 1 Samuel 16:13, the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. As the Holy Spirit came upon David, a distressing spirit came to Saul and troubled him.
    b. A distressing spirit from the LORD troubled him: If God is all-good, why did He send a distressing spirit upon Saul? There are two senses in which God may send something. He may send something in the active sense or He may send something in a passive sense. Actively, God never initiates or performs evil; He is the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning (James 1:17). Passively, God may withdraw the hand of His protection and therefore allow evil to come, without being the source of the evil itself.
    i. This is indicated by what happened with Saul. First, the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul. This meant Saul lost his spiritual “protection” and covering. So, Satan was more than ready to send a distressing spirit to fill the void in Saul.
ii. This is why the continual presence of the Holy Spirit for all Christians is such a comfort. We don’t have to fear that God will take the Holy Spirit from us (Romans 8:9-11, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20).
    c. From the LORD: Perhaps this was to judge Saul’s past wickedness and rebellion against the Holy Spirit’s guidance. This may be an example of God giving Saul over to his sin.
    i. Saul clearly had the Spirit of the LORD upon him at one time (1 Samuel 10:10). As he was proud and rebellious against God, Saul resisted the Holy Spirit. He told the Holy Spirit “No” and “Go away” so many times that God finally gave Saul what he wanted. But Saul never realized the price to pay when the Spirit of the LORD departed from him. Saul thought he would be freer to do his thing without the Spirit of the LORD “bugging” him. He didn’t realize he would be in even more bondage to a distressing spirit that troubled him.
ii. Even in this state Saul could repent. He was not past the place of repentance and restoration. It was up to him to receive God’s correction and respond with a tender, repentant heart before the LORD.
    d. A distressing spirit from the LORD troubled him: Today, Saul would probably be diagnosed as mentally ill. Yet his problem was spiritual in nature, not mental or psychological.
    i. There are many people in mental hospitals today that are really suffering from spiritual problems. It is certainly wrong to assume that every case of mental distress is spiritual because chemical imbalances and physiological problems are also real in this fallen world. Even so, there are certainly some that need liberation from a distressing spirit and may never find it in our modern mental health system."

The text does not say that “GOD sent an evil spirit to torment Saul”.
    The text says,
“After the Spirit of the LORD had departed from Saul, a spirit of distress from the LORD began to torment him.”
Meaning (1) The capital “S” Spirit in the first half of the text is God. God left Saul. (2) The lower case “s” spirit in the second half of the text is not God.(3) This lower case “s” spirit that is sent “from” God is the opposite of having God.
When we don’t have God we have darkness. Romans 1:23-24; John 3:18.

That is why music can cast out evil spirit in your house. Music songs that praise God, demons won't hear that because it insulted them.

Wrong, no music can cast out demons, music is to praise God no to be used as a weapon, our only weapon is faith! David played musics to Saul it calmed him down but didn’t cast out the demons.

God is in control of all things visible and invisible. I believe what the Bible says. God used an evil spirit/unclean spirit to torment Saul for His disobedience.
We see a similar thing happen with Ahab. God sends a lying spirit to deceive Ahab in 1 Kings 22:19-23:
And Micaiah said, “Therefore hear the word of the LORD: I saw the LORD sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing beside him on his right hand and on his left; and the LORD said, ‘Who will entice Ahab, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-gilead?’ And one said one thing, and another said another. Then a spirit came forward and stood before the LORD, saying, ‘I will entice him.’ And the LORD said to him, ‘By what means?’ And he said, ‘I will go out, and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.’ And he said, ‘You are to entice him, and you shall succeed; go out and do so.’ Now therefore behold, the LORD has put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these your prophets; the LORD has declared disaster for you.”

Watching it a second time I find myself asking how can we as Christians apply the whole passage to us today? Asking the question about what the spirit was is for sure an interesting study (that got me searching my bible for instance Judges 9:23 same type of spirit? ) but what other questions does God want me asking from this passage? With New Testament light can we guard against evil spirits by walking in The Spirit?

    I remember Job 1 verse 12 :
And the LORD said to Satan, "Behold, all that he has [is] in your power; only do not lay a hand on his [person]." So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.
There God allowed Satan to lay his hand on Job for His own purpose.
It is not surprising that God also allowed Satan to harass Saul.

1 Samuel 28 Saul finds a witch who can cast a raise spirit spell. Because he can't get g0d to cast it for him. It's a good spirit according to Saul because it is recognised as Samuel. Pulled up out of the earth and not down from heaven. The eternal fiery torment dungeon hadn't been constructed yet. That passage makes no mention of Samuel returning and as “We live by the Spirit.” Galatians 5:25. "each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgement” (Hebrews 9:27) How did Samuel skip judgement?

The NKJV says God sent Saul a "distressing spirit." Could this actually mean it was more so that Saul wasn't mentally stable in his state to rule Israel. It says God's Spirit left him after all. So what if that was the cause of the distressing spirit coming? This could have also set the stage for David to come in to become king. I think its important which translation we read that's closest to the Hebrew one to better understand the scriptures.

In Jewish Demonology, Demons are not supposed to have agency as free will is exclusive to humans. Ultimately and in the last analysis, nothing can happen outside of Gods will; Humanscale rebel against God but only because he willed that we would have free will. In this view, Demons are either not evil but simply beyond human standards or were corrupted by the fall of man in the same way that animals supposedly were.

I came across this chapter today and it really confuses me. All things from God are good. I heard that so often. Nothing bad comes from him. He might allow for bad forces to have their way - that's different.
I see this explanation as a poor attempt to justify this passage or expressions. We cannot depend on "Oh - that's what they thought back then, and that's why it is written this way, it's not, what they meant" This thinking opens the door to all sorts of interpretation and that quickly erodes the lyability of scripture.
I have to look up more interpretations.

Thanks for your comment. The majority of the Samuel narrative likely predates the book of Enoch by 2-3 centuries. The book of Enoch does contain the beginning of the idea of evil spirits as they are understood in the New Testament. However, at the time Samuel was written, evil spirits were probably understood differently.

@@TabletsAndTemples How can the 'Samuel narrative' predate Enoch? Have you read Enoch? I will find the exact scripture about evil spirits for you...
15.1 And He answered me, and said to me with His voice: "Hear! Do not be afraid, Enoch, you righteous man, and scribe of righteousness. Come here and hear my voice.
15.2 And go say to the Watchers of Heaven, who sent you to petition on their behalf: You ought to petition on behalf of men, not men on behalf of you.
15.3 Why have you left the High, Holy and Eternal Heaven, and lain with women, and become unclean with the daughters of men, and taken wives for yourselves, and done as the sons of the earth, and begotten giant sons?
15.4 And you were spiritual, Holy, living an eternal life, but you became unclean upon the women, and begot children through the blood of flesh, and lusted after the blood of men, and produced flesh and blood, as they do, who die and are destroyed.
15.5 And for this reason I give men wives; so that they might sow seed in them, and so that children might be born by them, so that deeds might be done on the Earth.
15.6 But you, formerly, were spiritual, living an eternal, immortal life, for all the generations of the world.
15.7 For this reason I did not arrange wives for you; because the dwelling of the spiritual ones is in Heaven.
15.8 And now, the giants who were born from body and flesh will be called Evil Spirits on the Earth, and on the Earth will be their dwelling.
15.9 And evil spirits came out from their flesh, because from above they were created, from the Holy Watchers was their origin and first foundation. Evil spirits they will be on Earth and ‘Spirits of the Evil Ones’ they will be called.
15.10 And the dwelling of the Spirits of Heaven is Heaven, but the dwelling of the spirits of the Earth, who were born on the Earth, is Earth.
15.11 And the spirits of the giants do wrong, are corrupt, attack, fight, break on the Earth, and cause sorrow. And they eat no food, do not thirst, and are not observed.
15.12 And these spirits will rise against the sons of men, and against the women, because they came out of them during the days of slaughter and destruction.
16.1 And the death of the giants, wherever the spirits have gone out from their bodies, their flesh will be destroyed, before the Judgment. Thus they will be destroyed until the Day of the Great Consummation is accomplished, upon the Great Age, upon the Watchers and the impious ones."
16.2 And now to the Watchers, who sent you to petition on their behalf, who were formerly in Heaven:
16.3 "You were in Heaven but its secrets had not yet been revealed to you; and a worthless mystery you knew. This you made known to women, in the hardness of your hearts. And through this mystery the women and the men cause evil to increase on the Earth."
16.4 Say to them therefore: "You will not have peace."
Enoch predates Israel and he explains exactly what the evil spirits are and how they attack us to this day, within us. We are subjected to these spirits until the great consummation. It is the spirits of the children of the fallen angels which were half human, which is why they are here with us on the Earth, because they came from humans. The canonized Bible has been cut down unfortunately hiding many things which is why this information has been lost to modern arrangements of the Bible.

@@walkforgiven I appreciate you come from a different theological tradition. Our approach on this channel is to approach texts from a scholarly perspective. The book of the Watchers is the oldest part of Enoch, and is dated by scholars to around 300-200BCE.
The book of Samuel almost certainly predates that.
@ReligionForBreakfast has a great video on the book of enoch that goes into a lot of detail.
