I bumped into Hugh Grant once at Heathrow airport in London. Had a very brief chat with him. He was extremely polite and down to earth. Seemed like a nice guy. Don't think he's got much time for all the fakery and pretentiousness that goes with Hollywood. Away from the movie business, in my experience, he was very decent.

He just seems like someone who at this point in his life, has no time for fools or pedantry or the usual Hollywood circuit gossip guff. Like the difference between him talking to someone like Colbert here or Ali Plumb on Radio 1 is pretty stark, versus that red carpet moment at the Oscars. Actually 'talk' to him about something and he seems more than amicable, and open in conversation. Ask him pointless filler questions, and he just seems bored.

Actually, I see that as his unique, quick-witted, smart sense of humor or, with a tad of sarcasm and always the right amount of self-irony. ...Though you may also be right about his general uncomfortableness. I also think this is a bit of a clash between British and American humor because the signature sense of humor by Brits like Hugh Grant is often subtle but cheeky. D&D's humour is much wittier and less signposted, and the whole thing feels like it's much shorter than its 2h14mins length. Instead of feeling like it's constantly trying to dazzle the viewer like superhero films tend to, each sequence is really nicely contained and moved the plot forward quickly. There are many editions, so you can totally have played D&D yet be completely unfamiliar with D&D, it's a glorious thing. I fiddled a ton with 3.x Ed, but I also farted around with 2nd Ed, 3.x was completely different in many ways, but interestingly it was probably easier to code 2nd Ed games than 3.x games because character creation is a nightmare in 3.x, and you need lots of options in character trees these days or people feel stifled, 2nd Ed was very big on making characters largely interchangeable, it was very hard to have a 'unique' Warrior, at least Thieves could spread their points a bit and feel different.

Stephen's an old school DnD nerd from before the Rogue was its own class, which is why he got a little confused! In ye olden times when Stephen would have played, Thief was definitely a class you could play, but these days Thief is a type of Rogue, and Rogue also covers all manner of assassins, sneaks, investigators and other quick, shadowy types

I'm surprised Stephen didn't know about the rogue class. Also, I really hope Hugh Grant gets asked to be on Critical Role, even if it's just a one-shot.

That’s a sign he hasn’t played in quite some time. The original 1974 version had only three classes (fighter, cleric, and magic user). The 1977 Greyhawk supplement added Paladin and Thief. I don’t remember when Thief got renamed as Rogue, but originally back in the day it was the Thief class. I do prefer the term Rogue, since it gives much more flexibility and scope for players to take their characters in lots of different directions.

AD&D had the Thief, the Assassin, and later introduced the Thief Acrobat as well. Steven probably would be most familiar with that version of the game as it was the version played most from the 80s into the 90s. Rogue replaced Thief as a base class name for 3rd Ed D&D I think.

Rogue seems to fit him, that or Bard. A red nose day episode of CR with Hugh Grant would be fun, and likely raise a good bit of money for a good cause. 🙂

Oh dear! I guess that it is not an "ass" (donkey/mule) that Hugh is proud to have developed in his squatting sword- fight moves, but instead, as he says quite clearly, he has an incredible "arse" (ie that part of the anatomy he can distinguish from his elbow...) 😂
