  • We've been working hard! Get a tour with RSM of the coop and run of Jurasschic Park 2.0 to see everything we've been doing. There's landscaping, upgraded roost bars, improved water sealing, and lots of plans for ventilation and cooling as it gets closer to summer here in San Antonio. Learn about poultry dust and get other random facts and tips as we go along. And of course, we're always here to help each other and learn from each other! So thanks for stopping by.

    Paint roof white & add inside framed screens to those other door ways so you can keep all the doors open at night as well. Instead of netting use a tarp in the summer time.

    Hi, how do you control all the mud in your chicken area???

    • @realsimplemama
      @realsimplemama  3 месяца назад

      Hi! I have videos here about what materials I use - but anything from construction sand, to hay, to mulch or leaves or peat moss. All those materials will be more absorbent and helpful!

    I am a new chicken owner. I put my
    Coop on 12”x12” blocks like you did. Do you think thats enough to stop predators from digging under the blocks to get into the coop? Or do you think it needs chicken wire underground outside of the blocks as a wider apron?

    • @realsimplemama
      @realsimplemama  4 года назад

      I think that it COULD be enough. But it depends... I would guess that if you live out on land and have more big predators, or if you’re not able to go and check on your chickens regularly, you might want to do the wire skirt.

    Yes, diatomaceous earth is awesome for mites in the coop! Just wear a dust mask when applying to the PDZ and that is that... no more mites, give it a chance to work... the Girls will move it around naturally... LOVE the vids... and LOVE the Omaha! I WANT one! Can't find one online either... sigh...

    I will also make a door to be able to close up for hurricanes and winter. But i love your fan idea. I live in southern Alabama so heat is much more worrisome to me. Right now my chicks are on my back porch ( 5 weeks old) but i am trying to get a coop and set up like i want

    I plan on a dedicated chicken run that is totally enclosed so I'll leave the doors open to the inside because it will have a top cover. Also I will tie the coop and run for rain coverage and water sealing the open door.

    You could have a business designing coops. I wish I would have thought of your tape idea, I need to do this. Did you suggest white vinegar and water for insects, on a video, once? Thanks for sharing. That name, Jurasschic Park is great! Stay well.

    • @realsimplemama
      @realsimplemama  4 года назад +1

      White vinegar and water can be a deodorizer/deterrent for things like ants and flies (I use essential oils in it too but don’t spray it on or near my birds when they’re in there), and I also use white vinegar to clean out their water bucket. Lots of uses!

    We did the same for our roost bars! Just have to seal it now.

      Hey! So far so great! Most of the plants are not super close to that rabbit wire fencing so they will get to grow for quite a while before the chickens can reach them. And I am hoping that there are so many choices that one plant will not get all of their attention

    I have been noticing those little bugs too. I don’t think they are mites. The are gray and they fly.... almost like teeny tiny moths. I sprinkled some DE all in their coop and they are gone already.

      Yes! Here too! Almost just like fruit flies. And they were not on my birds. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    I used small solar fans for each nest box. When working they did a good job. In Florida t gets so hot the cheep fans melted the sealer on the back of the solar panel. I had to replace yearly. I think I will try a larger one this summer. I also used a Ryobi fan outside of there run. It was pointed under the house that is elevated 2 foot above ground. Running on low it will run all day. Looking forward to the fan update. I had no problems with the night heat. I planted tall plants on both sids of my house. That gave them extra shade. I also used hot water heater insulation wrap to insulate the roof and the roof of the nest boxes.

      Well hey Ms Addie! You always are so kind and helpful, thank you. I hope to get the girls more shade though honestly in the afternoon the ash trees shade the run completely. But it does heat up all morning and I don’t want them to be hot at night when they go to bed. We do so much for our little flocks!

      🤔.. quite pleasant and relaxing 😌, lovely with less cars and hustle and bustle on the streets , and lovely to hear the lovely sounds of 🇬🇧 nature, and 🇬🇧birds ,who are not having to compete with the sounds of 🇬🇧human excessives 😏.
      🤔Sort of a bit of a very surreal adventure if you turn on the news ..
      and have a walk around , shops etc ...aaaaargh ! 🙄😀.
      what’s it all about ? , I don’t know 🤔.
      I’m hoping some good will come out of the experience, and also something good will be learned in my own personal adventure in this history 👍.
      Humans can be very strange creatures , it appears 🙄😀.
      They think they need a lot of ‘things’ 🙄.
      Maybe it is good for people to realise that many of the best things ..are actually free 🙂👍.
      Just need to care and love , and respect & find them , for what they are 🙂👍.
      The rest is just many a too many , just superficial throw away ‘treats’ when you think about it 😏
      And of course 🐝 a happy efficient , and a calm nature’s creature ..
      Which we have many examples , which we love .. for exactly just that ❤️🐔🙂👍
      And they love us , for being so too 🤗😉🙂👍x

    awesome videos ! I live on the NE side of San Antonio, and very eager to start my first flock of chickens, especially with all the time thanks to this Covid-19 stuff. I was the one 7-8 years ago build that small pond at your rental house. She was my first client I've ever had that had built a BIG coop and had those chickens there ! Small world ! Sad to see the micro pond broken and neglected,... Albeit, keep the great videos coming ! enjoy them all - neat to see another SA chicken fanatic :)

      WHAAAAAAAT?!?!? In Morning Glen?!? I can’t believe it!!! Yes we tried to fix the motor but it was cemented in, and plus the pond rubber liner was cracked so that Purple Heart kept coming through. We need to talk! theMama@realsimplemama.com

      @@realsimplemama - Indeed,.. unsure of how many folks came thru that house in morning glen since the "chicken lady" had me design her micro pond. No idea who cemented in the pond pump !??!?! what ? sooooo crazy.
      And once that 45 mil is compromised, because of sun and starts to rip - any plants will surely infuse thru it. sad sad. Love designing and building water features as large as POOLS to as small as bubbling decorative pots. Already have a awesome small goldfish pond waiting for my up and coming chicken flock to enjoy ! www.aquaticescapes.net

      It really does seem like someone different has lived there every year. We were there for just one, and the current owners (we rented from them) did live there a while before renting it out. We did replace some wood on the coop and do other minor improvements for the safety of our girls, but it’s hard to put a ton of money into someone else’s property and not be paid back. 🤷🏻‍♀️
      Anyway, we own our current place and plan to be here a while! And we are naturalists and just outdoor nerds so may we need a pond too...

    For the middle poles your could also use laundry line poles! They have a little fork thing on the end to hold up wire! 😁

    If it gets to hot and unable to cool offwhere the roost are currently I placed roost on the floor on a 12in tall roost 2x4 while it was hot it was 20 degrees cooler

      Yes I think you’re right! And of course it’s cooler this weekend but we will be keeping data just to know when it’s hottest and coolest up in the roosts.

    This is the door I use. I love it. It uses regular batteries but they’ve lasted a really long time. It comes up at first light/dawn and goes down at dusk.

      real simple mama I love this one. I’ve not had any trouble with it. And I like that it opens at dawn and closes at dusk. I’m not always home when it gets dark , especially in winter and I live alone so I’m it for them. It makes me feel good about my girls being safe. They are inside an electrified fence too but in winter I had trouble with it charging enough because of the lack of sun for the solar power. I’ll try to send my photo to your email.
