Is it even possible to die in this fight? I only did 1 undertale run because, imo, the game simply isn't as good as people claimed it to be. Did someone try to stay in Flowey's attacks?
you can die in a superficial sense; the game pretends to crash again, and when you reopen it it picks up from the last time flowey saved, which he does every time you come back from calling one of the souls (in addition to using it as part of his attacks). so you still never really lose any progress in this fight no matter how much of a beating you take. iirc the actual finale is more traditionally lethal
You can die to Flowey if you take _a lot_ of hits (13 to be exact), in which case the game closes on you. Restarting it will place you right after the last Soul phase you cleared. In the Soul phases themselves it's impossible to die, which means you don't have to worry about damage since the Soul will heal you right back up after getting to the ACT button. I think the weird health bar scaling (which makes you feel a lot closer to death than you actually are) might be because Toby Fox wanted to combine two conflicting ideas when designing the boss: Make the player feel like they're on death's door all the time to fit the dramatic "fighting against impossible odds" motif, while at the same time keeping the fight easy enough to ensure the game's climax is paced properly. The flip side of that design decision is that the battle can feel anticlimactic if the player sees through that little trick and assumes that it's impossible to die, since that eliminates a lot of the stakes in the fight (you're still playing a video game, after all).
