    0:30 I reckon the two cars move into the intersection because of the honking, not knowing it was the trigger to turn off the siren. That they take it as a signal to move out of the way shouldn't be unexpected.

    • @ChrisMartinEMS
      @ChrisMartinEMS  3 года назад +136

      I agree. I think the horn triggering the siren to stop actually sounded more like deliberate beep before ethe sirens cancelled. One of the downsides of that trigger method. One for me to take away about cancelling them sooner on the approach to reds.

      however I have a bit of envy about this possibility of changing the tone of the siren, in Italy it would not be possible, and then I think that the driver of the van took advantage of the situation to cross with the red, instead the other for me was a good answer even if dangerous

    This is great insight. Also it’s helped me. I tend to panic when I see the blue light approaching. now I’ve got a feel what what your/their mind set is, I’m now thinking right I need to make a space but do it safely.

      Yeah! Each new video gives me more and more situations I wouldn't normally have a chance to practice, which has helped me massively when I had to let a blue light get past me on a blind corner. I'm sure I would have panicked and stopped rather than carrying on through until they had a clear line of sight before I started watching these.

      Never panic while driving (or in anything else for that matter) - it generally only leads to bad decisions.
      Make a point of just being aware, analysing but staying calm. You will find good decisions occur in plenty of time and everything just goes more smoothly.

    New subscriber here. We just happened across your videos, thanks for the magic of the YourTube algorithm, and it's great to watch the comentary videos as it really helps understand what we can do as a regular motorist to help a blue light driver progress as quickly and safely as possible. I try to be aware as I can but you sometimes get caught up in your own traffic navigation and react a little latter than is ideal but understanding that moving to a better location to create a space, rather than just trying to push over to the left as soon as possible, is often a better option for a blue light driver.

  • @MalcolmCrabbe
    @MalcolmCrabbe 3 года назад +1

    Chris, can you clarify something. I was always told that in the scenario like that at the start of the video where circumstances are such that you can't move to make a gap for an emergency vehicle behind you, that if you drive through a red light to make space as the two cars did in this clip, that you are still committing that traffic offence of driving through a red light and as such could receive the points and a fine? The info I was told (granted it was a few decades back) by my driving instructor that it would be down to the EMS driver to asses if they pass through the junction on the opposite side, or stay behind traffic with sirens off.

    • @theonlynemesis
      @theonlynemesis 2 года назад

      The reason you still get points and a fine is because the highway code says "Consider the route of such a vehicle and take appropriate action to let it pass, while complying with all traffic signs". So it clearly states while complying with all traffic signs which includes traffic lights.

    • @ChrisMartinEMS
      @ChrisMartinEMS  3 года назад

      Hi Grant. Simple answer is no, you're not, not unless a Police officer waves you through.
      Technically, if you cross a red light, even if an emg vehicle is trying to get through, you'll have committed an offence. Whether you'd get prosecuted for said offence would be down to the Police and a judge but I'd never expect someone to go through on account of me. If there is space to move to the side that's great and I personally always stop 6-10' short of a junction red light to give me space to move to the side if an emg vehicle needs to get through.
      Sorry if that means you lost the debate.

      True. Though I suppose they could argue that they don't know if an unmarked black car on blue lights is Police or not? Plus unfortunately Chris' siren selector is the horn so it could have seemed like he was beeping at them to go through

    • @ChrisMartinEMS
      @ChrisMartinEMS  3 года назад +3

      Agreed and we should never encourage anyone through a red light with use of lights and sirens. If there is space to move to the sides prior to the entry then great but in this instance, silencing my sirens triggered an extra horn beep that could have been heard as a encouragement to move beep but wasn't the intention. Never want anyone to break the law to get out of the way. Needs to be safe.
      The other question I suppose to support the drivers, had Police seen it, seeing the opposing direction was also on red so no traffic coming on, would they have been prosecuted? The optomist in me says no.
      Thanks for the comments.

      @@ChrisMartinEMS You like to think a common sense copper wouldn't do anything, but had there been a red light camera on that junction they would have received tickets, and when they wrote back explaining, the ticket office would have defended the issuing of the tickets and they would stand. People have taken it to court before...and lost. Because simply put the magistrates hands are tied, UK law provides no exemption to contravening a red signal for an emergency vehicle.
      I've had to sit at a red light before pointing at the red signal because a police driver behind didn't cancel the siren and was trying to intimidate me into (illegally) making space. Why on earth do the emergency services use these modern American type sirens? You can't hear them unless they're really close.! You could hear the old two tone blasters for miles. Plus, new cars have far superior sound proofing to old cars and if you've got modern music playing (even quietly in the background) it's full of all sorts of similar sounds and tones drowning out the new approaching sirens. Not that I listen to music whilst driving, I'm too old now..., let's face it, I can remember the old 70s 'NEE NAW' sirens, the sweeny, Dixon of dock green and z cars! LOL 😂

      Chris is a critical care paramedic of some kind so he's like a "high-level" paramedic with special skills and experience compared to the majority of paramedics. He'll be dispatched to very serious cases and so is probably available at any time using a pager to alert him to calls. To facilitate this his personal car, or an unmarked car provided, is fitted with lights and sirens so that he can respond from home if needed. An ambulance will definitely also be tasked to the same call and it could be that they're already on-scene requesting additional support

    3:19 - do people like this even look, let alone hear their surroundings?
    Why continue slowly pulling out when there is a blue light vehicle speeding toward you?

    the rule is stupid, if there's an emergency vehicle behind you you should have the right to go a couple meters over the line at the red light, like in a lot of countries in Middle Europe

      You can only do that when it's safe though. Traffic might be coming from the other direction that doesn't see and hear the emergency vehicle coming. That can lead to dangerous situations. The same rule applies in the Netherlands

      @@kempo_95 Not clear which country you are referring to. In the UK you cannot go across the line at all to make way for an emergency vehicle. Do it on a junction with a red light camera and you'll find out to your cost.

      @@ryanmitcham5522 That is the official rule in the Netherlands as well. But it's generally allowed to cross the white line to make room. However there is also generally room for 1 or 2 cars between the white line and the intersection itself. So you aren't in real danger.

    I never go through a red light to make way for emergency vehicles. Irrespective of trying to be helpful, it's still breaking the law and I've heard of people getting fines and points for doing it.
