  • @crispynotburnt

    Careful with aftermarket flex-disks.. mine came with the arrows molded BACKWARDS, which would've make me install in incorrectly if I followed them.
    You nailed it when you said the driveshaft moves counterclockwise.
    Transmission output should "push" into the driveshaft, in each of the 3 beefy links of the flex-disk.
    Transmission bolt first, THEN driveshaft bolt - always!

    I am about to this job on my '02 BMW 530i; that is, changing the GUIBO, Center Support Bearing and if needed, the Driveshaft Centering Sleeve.
    I have been mentally gearing up for the task but have been hesitant because I have questioned the proper orientation of the GUIBO, given the molded arrows and its true orientation.
    This video clearly provides me with the GUIBO orientation, as factual information.
    Thank you for your candor and attention to the fine details. Starting in a few days just waiting on a part or two from ECS.
    I truly feel ready for this!

      @@mrjgueret OK, so I completed this task on October 6th, took about 11 hours to do this job, spanning two days. I had one heck of a time getting the guide sleeve off the driveshaft. Other than that, all went well with the replacement of the Febi brand Flex-Disc (GUIBO), Center Support Bearing (CSB), Drive shaft centering sleeve and a fresh repack the rear CV bearings using Redline CV-2 Synthetic grease and a new CV joint gasket.
      While there, I replaced the Transmission and Engine mounts, seemed like a good time to do it. It is worth mentioning that 3 of the 6 bolts on the GUIBO are longer than the other 3 which have washers, as sandwiched between the GUIBO and driveshaft (a clue) that they are to be installed on the aluminum drive shaft, which prevents galling or dis-similar metal from occurring on the GUIBO, I suppose.
      Per your very informative video presentation, I was able to quickly identify the proper orientation of the arrows manufactured on the GUIBO itself. I highlighted, with a yellow paint pen, the arrows pointing towards the transmission prior to install. This is likely not needed but it did help me when installing bolts on the driveshaft prior to mounting on the output shaft of the transmission.
      Overall a success, a not-so-easy job using two separate floor jacks to lift and lower the engine/transmission and being careful with the exhaust system being supported at the rear of the car. I discovered that I could not removed the exhaust bolts as they were rusted and would break if I attempted to remove the exhaust. That is another small job, reserved for another day.
      Thank you and it is my hope that my personal experience and input adds to the quality of your video and somebody else benefits in performing this very technical task.
      To date; (11/8/2021) the BMW runs great, no clunks when braking or accelerating just super-smooth shifting through the gears. It is a mental game that one has to overcome as I lived with that alarming clunk for a while especially while accelerating. Crazy how we get conditioned to a certain "thing" and when it is repaired, we still look for that clunking noise.
      Thanks again!

    Omg bro you have no idea the headache you saved me. I replaced my flexpack too and I noticed I had the same problem even after installing a new one from Amazon. Well to my surprise I found out that it was a cheap China knockoff that’s floating around and it has the arrow pointing in the wrong direction. So even if you followed the arrow you would still install it wrong. This video helped understand how it supposed to work and once I took apart a second time I realized it was installed backwards. By now it’s all to shit so time to put another one.

    An easy way BMW offers to have the disc in correct position is that 'the arrows should point to the flange arms' (in both directions, that is alternately, one arrow points to the transmission flange, the next one points to the propeller flange)

    • @mrjgueret
      @mrjgueret  5 лет назад +2

      Very good to add, and as I stated arrow should point to trans flange. The outcome of following that direction would indeed cause the adjacent arrows to point toward propeller shaft. Thanks for your comment. it helps this video move ahead of the videos that mention nothing at all about how to install this disk correctly. happy motoring.

    Ended up here from my recommendation list. Watched it for fun n man i need to crawl under my car and make sure mine is installed correctly. My stick e46 has a clunk whenever im shifting. My flex disk has cracks in it but the cluck i feel is from the back. I cant mimic the sound obviously. But it feels like as if the rubber part in the diff bushing or in some suspension part is gone and metal is hitting metal whenever the driveline engages and disengages. Found one crack near the subframe mounting point. Need to investigate more in day light. Glad i came across this as im planning on doing the flex disk n carrier bearing.

    • @mrjgueret
      @mrjgueret  7 лет назад

      5Riverz yeah subframe mounts or rear diff mounts is what I was thinking. if you put the car on 4 solid jack stands, set the emergency brake real tight, have someone else give it torque in first gear and do the same in reverse you can watch the horror show unfold underneath the car. just be careful try and stay out from underneath unless you trust your jack stands..

    Hey. I have an E46 M3 and it does this "kaka kaka kak" kind of rattle you mimic here when I press the clutch in reverse or 1st gear at parking speeds...around 1000-1500 rpm. It does it especially. when I give a bit of gas, engine revs to this range and then quickly let off the throttle and press the clutch. It does not do it it higher gears. If I pay attention and slowly press the clutch when I park, I can - most of the time - avoid the rattle. Clutch and flywheel is new. Sounds like it could be the flex disc.
    Although my mechanic said they did not see anything being worn out when they replaced the clutch, I will have the flex disc replaced now. If it solves the rattle, that would be a cure for something I have since I bought the car (1year, 10'000 miles ago)😀

    • @mrjgueret
      @mrjgueret  7 лет назад +1

      Zsolt Szabó yes, replace the disk with oem or trusted quality replacement. make sure to install as instructed here. if you follow the video closely you will understand that you will always have the clatter in reverse when depressing the clutch rapidly. nature of the beast, you can't have it both ways.

      James Hall , dude that's hilarious! When we bought the car both windows wouldn't go up and down. I cleaned all the tracking and replaced the piece of crap plastic pieces you speak of. You're right it's too bad I didn't do a video of that. There actually is a nice way to do it and a butcher way to do it. Unfortunately the butcher had already reached this car, but after rebuilding the door panel I've pretty much undone The Butchery! I'll definitely do a video the next time I'm in the door but I doubt it'll be anytime soon. Remember if you have door airbags and unplug them it will set a code that will need to be cleared. Good luck with your endeavors thanks for the comment.

      Obviously hard to diagnose anything from over here but when you were doing those hard digs (assuming you mean spinning tires) on the concrete were there any points at which you were heavily engaged in turning. If your car has limited slip and you remove all pressure from the inside tire, there is a possibility you can cause damage to the limited-slip chuck and spider gears and spider shaft. Have you jacked it up and tried feeling your differential. If it's sloppy you may want to take a closer look with the cover off. Limited-slip differentials are only good for helping lock right and left together while going straight. Too much power\traction to one tire could burn through a friction pack.

      @@mrjgueret it was in a straight line....I haven't removed the cover as if yet....those cars have the independent rear suspension....so covers are on the side...with the car on stands it doesn't sound abnormal rotating the wheels..on the ground the cluck is .only when put into gear forward or reverse......I am not a auto tech....so my repair skills are limited......just did not want to be bent over by someone saying I need this, that, and the whole other.....
