Except *that's not* Rippetoe. Rippetoe advocates for looking 12 to 15 feet on the floor in front of you. From the starting position, 12 to 15 feet on the floor in front of you results in a chin up position, not a chin down position.

    Powerlifters train people to have your chin straight down because it straightens your spine. Brian alsruhe teaches this, and he deadlifts alot of weight. Eddie hall also does this, and he has the world record. Soooooooo must be a reason

    • @Enviouslordshaxx
      @Enviouslordshaxx 6 лет назад +7

      Pewtis compared to his other lifts Brian is a terrible puller actually. To be sub 8 plates at his level is unheard of. His dl is leagues behind his ohp and squat. His form is really sloppy on deads. Not taking anything away from him as a lifter, every person has a weak point and that is his. Also Eddie pulls with a deadlift suit

    Disagree with this. If hyperextending your c-spine is a useful cue, it's not that bad, but it's definitely not the mechanically optimal way to lift. You can keep a neutral c-spine (ideal) and still keep your chest up. Don't do it with your neck, do it with your lats and lumbar. I actually lift like this naturally but it's kind of a bad habit I'm trying to break.

    I'm certainly not arguing (kinda hard to argue with a guy who deadlifts like Jack does) but I was always told not to look up when deadlifting or squatting. The reason everyone gave me was that looking up puts a slight bend where your spine connects to your neck and can lead to injuries up there; as such I was always told to keep it neutral.

I like doing jefferson deadlifts or behind the back deadlifts simply because the reduced pressure on the thoratic and lumbar (specifically L5,and S1) spine.

    • @hardcorebarbell
      @hardcorebarbell 6 лет назад +3

      TheBlooRayChannel Do you equate best-selling with most results gotten?
      If the difference in individuals deadlifts went up specifically switching from a program to his, I'd understand.
      If the person had experience already, and SS added to their total, I'd understand .
      If the general consensus was, SS helps those that are intermediate and advanced, across the board.. I'd understand.
      But simply because its sells, doesn't mean it works.
      And if it works soo well, is it for overall strength, conditioning, or power?
      We're specifically speaking about strength, posture, and power in the deadlift.
      Are you saying SS fixes these issues because it sells well?
      That's weak

  • @Francesco-cj3oi
    @Francesco-cj3oi 5 лет назад

    If you keep your spine neutral, you will look to the ground in front of you, without tilting your head down and collapsing anything. I honestly don't recall rippetoe teaching anything like that. Looking up might be a good tip to not round your spine forward during the lift, but it seems like it would cause you to overextend your lower back thus loading it too much. It also doesn't give you a reference point to look at during the movement and you might risk losing your balance while looking at the ceiling. Looking straight ahead or slightly down a few feet in front of you is probably the same, whereas looking straight down or straight up sound like it would have a negative impact

  • @CrimsonStrider
    @CrimsonStrider 6 лет назад

    Tom, SS/Rip doesn't say to look down like that. There's one cue of holding a tennis ball with your chin for those that tend to look up, but often cues over exaggerate/correct an issue intentionally. Context is important. That cue is for people that continually look up despite other cues.
    SS/Rip advocate a neutral spine and advise one to pick a spot on the distance and focus on that. Looking *up* doesn't seem productive because you'll tend to raise your chest and bring the bar behind your midfoot which makes the pull hard.
    Looking too far up or down are both seen as incorrect although there are plenty of strong people with less than perfect technique. We're only human.
    I'll also add that you can extend the upper back with a neutral spine.

  • @dbdb-hf1gc
    @dbdb-hf1gc 6 лет назад +4

    you should keep your head looking down because you can actually cause damage to your optic nerve in the neck when you look up. You just need to ensure your form is tight before executing the lift. but generally it is safer to have chin to chest, just ensure form is not compromised before lifting bar. Also think about the deadlift and why we put our spine into a safe position, we focus so much on the lower back, but putting your chin up also puts your cervical vertebrae out of alignment, don't you want your entire spine to be in the proper safe position? you can cue people by telling them shoulders down and back and proud chest, while keeping their chin down to maintain proper form.

      Um....when I learned anatomy the optic nerve was the second crainial nerve meaning it stayed in the head, does not traverse anywhere in the neck.

    • @dbdb-hf1gc
      @dbdb-hf1gc 6 лет назад +1

      yes true, but not completely true, the coverings
      along the optic nerve travel back deep into the brain and eventually make their connection to the
      second vertebra (C2) in the neck. Referring back my original comment this is why it is proper to keep the cervical vertebrae in its proper anatomical position. Not only for this reason but also just not causing strain on that part of the neck as well. I have had people before whose vision has gone blurry or blank for brief seconds without being dizzy due to the putting the cervical portion of the vertebrae in a bad position and causing a strain on the nerve. Think of it like your bicep your long head connects to the shoulder but your bicep is primarily on your arm, if that analogy makes sense.

    • @jaredl1088
      @jaredl1088 6 лет назад +1

      Jerud I've not learnt much about neural anatomy but I know that deadlifting like that is dangerous from a safety POV, regarding the alignment of the vertibral column and the compromising of the cervical portion. Maybe it's good advice for powerlifters (to get the most weight up, I'm not familiar with those movements) but not a great mindset to give any other kind-of deadlifter.

      The reasoning for what a superhuman does and yourself doing it, doesnt have the same end point.
      Just because they can, doesnt mean you could.
      This cue is to "prevent" the chest caving in. Doesn't necessarily mean that it's the only way to cue. But simply saying you'll do it Larry's way like it's superior is asinine.
      Pete Runish was known for his extreme rip and grip and poor technique. He got very far and pulled a lot, but also suffered a lot. Just to quickly clarify: Rippetoe does not say to "look down" for deadlift. You do want to maintain a neutral spine during squat, which means not cranking your neck up. However, as Rip would say, "deadlift is not a squat." In starting strength (if I remember correctly), he says to look straight ahead/pick a spot about 15 feet in front of you and stare at it.

    Cues that I would use for a deadlift are:
    Eyes level
    Knees inside elbows
    Hips in
    You are starting with your hips too high and therefor using your lower back muscle to extend the hip, more than your glutes. This also means you are under using your leg muscles. Keep your hips and shoulders at the same angle until the bar is around the knees then bring the hips in with your glutes. You naturally fix this as you move to a higher weight because it requires better sequencing and activation of muscles to help lift the increase in load.
    Dude with the glasses was much more balanced but has to be careful about hyperextending the back at extreme loads. Its like locking your knees on a leg press

    This Jack fella is speaking nonsense.
    He is dangerous person to be lifting with, in my opinion. He gives advice and feedback with such confidence, it becomes difficult to even think about questioning where he gets his information.
    "Biggest thing I see, because people send me videos all of the time..." - this has me concerned.
    How the Russians pull? I don't believe pulling like that is a "Russian" way of pulling sumo. I also don't think that their chins are so elevated that they're looking behind them by the time their pull is completed. That's a horrible statement to make.
    Jack claiming all of his videos that are sent to him, and all talking about where the eyes and chin should be, and the chest, and the speed of the lift etc... Then not correcting the female lifter's form when it's staring him right in the face tells me he's extremely skilled at tricking people into thinking he is a wealth of knowledge. He is fantastic at using powerlifting key words - I'll give him that.
