Actually, they are light transitional rapiers with a small heart-shaped shell ("cup") and shortened quillons, so they can be used as smallswords. No knuckleguard. Technique and footwork is more consistent with smallswords (with military style blades, i.e with edges) - of course with a lot of old swashbuckling clichés thrown in :)
