I am 100% behind cowboy on the quest design. It may have worked in more linear games, but for an open world game a Morrowind style journal to keep tabs on previous conversations is a must have. Finding NPC locations to progress quests is also way too convoluted. Getting more clues as to where they are going to be (like Blaidd's actual location when he says he'll meet you at the impact crater and he's not there) would really help for this.

I have the exact opposite problem from ruri. I found the camera would never stop swapping mid fight. I could be in a boss fight and multiple times my camera would be like oh you wanted to lock onto this deer 100 metres in the back?
Yes, please do. If you read the option description its a little deceptive, as it makes you think it swaps on target death, but it applies to anytime your current target moves out of range, too quickly for the camera, or the specific spot where the lockon dot is attached to moves out of bounds will cause a target swap.
17:10 THIS! Yes, I had the exact same thought. The game's camera is great for exploration and dungeon crawling, but for big boss fights it would make sense to zoom out, pretty much as much as technically possible without the performance tanking. And yes, finally someone brings up OG God Of War, which already had this nailed and then they changed it with the new games, making it less unique and just like most other games when it wasn't broken to begin with. Great to see somebody else share the sentiment.
I love great shields. 8 used them all through NG as my strength build and in NG+ I picked up the fingerprint shield and the ruins greatsword and had a wonderful time. Plus with the right build you can make blocking with the fingerprint shield consume no stamina.
Dung Eater is actually a very interesting character. He's kind of a Punisher-like character but a little bit more fucked up in the head... but still, he's not just "chaotic evil" for no reason. Also, what you guys said about one offs and Miyazaki doing different stuff. I would advise people to keep their hopes for another open world "FromSouls" in check. I really believe there's a good chance we'll still get the more contained Souls experience. Like, I don't think "Bloodborne 2" (if it ever happens) will be an open world game like Elden Ring. To me ER really is their magnum opus but I can't lie and say it didn't felt like a marathon at the end. I was loving it but at the same time I could feel myself mentally tired from the boss gauntlet that is the game. Don't get me wrong, it's a 10/10 for me and I will replay it immediately (to me Souls games are always better the more knowledge you have), I'm just saying there is still a place for a more focused, 60 hour experience "metroidvania-esque" Souls games like Bloodborne or DS3. At the end of the day, I can't pick between Elden Ring and Bloodborne for my favorite game of all time. And that says a lot about Bloodborne. I think ER is overall the better game but the gameplay and themes of Bloodborne is just.. perfect.
Probably there will be a lot of refinement of the open world mechanics in the DLC over the course of a few years, and then in another half-decade or more a spiritual successor will arrive.
I doubt they would go back to more confined RPG's, they set a new standard for the gaming industry. This is the game Dark Souls wanted to be but they didn't the experience or budget yet.
@@20eyesmisfit if ER is the game they always wanted to make they stumbled upon Dark Souls by sheer luck. I wouldn't say ER is a straight up Improvement or evolution, I would say it borrowed from past Souls games and made an open World around it. It's something else, that learned and improved on lessons learned from previous games. That said, as much as I love the "Legacy Dungeons" in ER, they're no Yharnam, Undead Burg or Anor Londo to name a few. They feel more like smaller (but still amazing) areas like Cainhurst, Painted World of Ariamis. At the end of the day all I'm saying is that Elden Ring's design is amazing in it's own way but it doesnt replace older titles, IMO of course.
One point I agree with early in this video is switching targets while locked on. It doesn't work half the time. And the camera will rotate my pov to a point where lock on disappears after killing an enemy, when there are other enemies on screen. Also, if a target gets hit and falls down while locked on (like the bat beings that hang upside down), when they hit the ground, the lock on disappears on that target. So, it has to be re-engaged.
Playing on Series x is amazing. No glitches or crashes after 110 hrs except for the day 1 issues with friends joining. Since then, flawless and looks amazing
I'm about to finish my second playthrough on Elden ring. The game is absolutely fantastic but my all-time favorite game is still sekiro. No video game developer has ever done sword combat that good. Ghost of tsushima was a pretty good game as well as far as a sword combat but sekiro is on another level. I don't believe there will ever be a better game than sekiro. I just want more combat like that. Do away with the stamina bars that limit the player
1000000000%. Amen to everything you just said. Sekiro isn’t my favorite story-wise and world-wise and art-wise and character-wise.... but combat gameplay-wise, it’s the best game ever.
Love it when u both come together.. You both are like the perfect pair. And 8 been watching all ur posts and cowboys but prefer urs as its more homegrown feels natural maybe its because he made so many I started to lose track and whats he doing and where in the game. I feel we are both same place and I've spent 9ver 150hrs easy and still just entering haigtree..and not done some of the end game bosses. Anyway I enjoy both of u and im sycribed to just the base free value but will honor u with a paid subscription when payday comes. Tip of the hat to Rurikon stay safe stay humble
Lmao! 🤣 FightinCowboy's such a character lol so hilarious I remember ppl being legitimately upset also that he obliterated Malenia on his first try lol
@@Spectacular_Insanity yea we know he’s good, but that attempt had no skill in it. It’s just pretty disappointing seeing him cheese the fuck out of her.
@@zezqi_ You're just salty. Figuring out the most efficient way to fight a boss is part of being skilled. It's much more disappointing watching someone fight a boss 50 times and die because they keep trying the same tactic that isn't working.
I played Elden Ring on PS5, so regarding the swapping of targets (once locked on) I had the same issues in trying to snap to different enemies. It is not a controller problem as FightinCowboy has mentioned, but a game design flaw.
Verteran Cowboy fan here, new to Ruri but I can identify with him on the camera angle struggle 100%. It drives me nuts. I think Cowboy is right though. Its a part of the game and should be left alone. I think Ruri, like me at times, can take what's challenging and confuse it with "This needs to be fixed". But i get it, for sure.
The camera in Elden Ring was actually improved though. It now goes through pillars and other floating geometry that it would have clipped against in previous games.
The problem with the camera is that it automatically forces itself back to centered view, making manual camera control like you can do in monster hunter nearly impossible. And the target cam is complete garbage, like ruri said, it doesnt properly switch targets. Was playing wity a heavy thrusting sword and it was such a huge pain. Of course depending on the weapon, this thing might be no issue at all.
2 great creators representatives of both monster hunter and souls. I first found cowboy back with Bloodborne and since then have played every souls except demon souls and rurikan back with monster hunter world. Keep doing the great work. Can't wait for the monster hunter rise expansion!
Just discovered your channel, and a big fan of Cowboy. Thanks for doing this guys! You guys opened with the performance issues. I don't know how I lucked into this situation, but for whatever reason, the game has NEVER crashed on me. Not a single time. Nor have I experienced frame drops unless I had something dumb running in the background at the same time (like After Effects or Blender). I'm on a beefy i9 10-core intel rig, and the game (and OS) is installed on a Samsung NVMe drive - BUT, because of the video card chaos, I'm still running an old 1080 GeForce (in 2k resolution) card. I have no idea how that worked out in my favor, but on this older card, the game was absolute butter. I was floored at how well it ran. I'd be very curious to know if players on older video card hardware are also having better performance. That sounds crazy, but I think it actually helps.
Did ruri just mention etrian odyssey!!!!!???? DID RURI JUST MENTION MY SECOND FAVORITE GAME SERIES OF ALL TIME!!! sweet, good to hear more people know about them. Last I heard there was another game in the works. Last they mentioned it was back in November I think. For those wondering MH is #1 and souls is #3.
I think that the laberynth part was the most funny and crazy thing that happened, these designers made the things gooood. I render like 5 mins of video tops and I already hate it, so I cant imagine HOURS of editing good lord. Love the dad talk at the end ♥
Just because u used a summons doesn’t make it automatically easier. There’s a lot of factors the summons level whether u buffed which talismans which ashes and armour. U can use summons and have a harder time than someone fighting solo who uses oped weapons buffs etc
i have 150 hrs in elden ring . beat it . i have 5800x and 3070. played at 1440p at maximum settings at 60 fps constant . the only frame dip i got was at first tree sentinal and the bonfire to the first troll when he jumps from above before margit . apart from that game ran smooth till the end and only one crash for me in those 150 hours . i think some game engine doesn't respond well when you are doing fifty things at once , recording while playing etc or even at 4k . people have 20 different devices connected to their cpus to make matter worse . acg complain about bugs a lot while he has 50 usb ports with other devices connected. its not the games fault all the time when people complain that they have 3080 and game is not working well etc . yeah some games are buggy when they release like arkham knight , unity , witcher 3 but it's not at that huge amount that people complain about
The parts of Elden Ring I hated the most where the acrophobia inducing ledge balancing sections. Gelmir Hero's Tomb, the Caelid Tower, the Carian Study Hall. The pit down to the three fingers werent so bad for me for 3 reasons: 1, You dont really have to fight so if I died I wouldnt need to reapply a rune arc. 2, I go there after ive spent most of my runes so it doesnt matter if I lose my small change. 3, You're supposed to be falling down, wich doesnt feel as bad as trying to not fall down. It wouldve been a lot worse for me if you had to climb all the way up instead pf dropping down.
The teleported chest dungeon, there’s actually three separate instances but one is shorter and has no loot. I know because I meticulously marked every single instance with rainbow stones and wrote down which colors were where, and tested every single chest in the whole place.
I agreed with you for about 100 hours. Then i got bored as fuck, realized the open world is as horseshit as every other open world, and the pvp is utter garbage
@@yoloparrot42 Fair enough, I feel the late game stuff doesn't have quite the same amount of polish. I'm not interested in the pvp so I can't say. Still, a good 100 hours is pretty welcome these days. I'll probably take a break after I finish it but definitely play it for a while.
@@yoloparrot42 far from perfect, but amazingly fun; I suggest you give it more of a shot, because while I understand the initial response to your first duel being double seppuku cross nagitanas followed by your first invasion being a threeway magic gank, will a bit of patience you find out there’s a lottt of people who just want to have fun and do their own thing with their unique builds, the possibilities start to open up and become so much fun
I have three builds and characters going. over 200hrs in and only one character is just getting to the giant lands. The game is absolutely incredible and now I am really wanting to start a 4th character as a dex dagger build.
Kind of a random question but I’m hoping somebody can verify this for me but is FightinCowboy the karate man that wrestles with the bounty Hunter patty mayo in this one youtube video? He sounds and looks identical to that man just type in like karate man fights patty mayo.
Gotta agree with Cowboy here. I don't think the camera is that bad. I think this is more or less a user issue and personal taste. Sorry but the camera really isn't that big of a deal.
I think Cowboy is mistaking designed challenge with something that shouldn't be a struggle. The camera is pretty awful in this game, especially for large enemies and your ability to react to them being hindered by not being able to see them because they're too large to fit into view. It's odd though, because they fixed that issue somewhat during the Ludwig fight by actually zooming out the camera during his encounter. So they've already made exceptions like this before and if this gaming is going to have massive, epic bosses like the Fire Giant, they need to design their camera around that because use being hit by something because the boss' scale just doesn't allow us to see the telegraphs isn't a challenge, it's just a massive annoyance. There's nothing for the player to do in order to fix that. Cowboy and Rurikhan both get slammed for using the "OP tactics" XD Peeve has the same issue when his first PvP build was oriented around the Moonveil, because at the time he was using it, not EVERYONE was using it XD People need to get over this Summons thing. There's an entire upgrade system oriented around the summons, clearly they're intended to be used and a lot of the game is designed around them being used. They're not some cheat code or something, they're a feature of the game. Get over it. Also, Mimic Tear is not only good for being pretty powerful (even after the nerf), but also just being very complex and interesting. It is your build, your entire setup. That means that it even has your talismans and you can put an aggro talisman on, summon Mimic Tear, take the talisman off but Mimic Tear will still have it and draw aggro more effectively. That level of detail makes it easily the most interesting summon as well as one of the most powerful. Okay, so here's an interesting bit for Cowboy... I've never played this game online, only offline. That grace at the magma wyrm, sometimes it and other grace sites appear and you can't interact with them for some reason. I'm not sure if that was recently patched or not, but there was a span where I couldn't activate those and no messages were present because I was offline. So that might have been just a bug he experienced too. "You get your medium roll, stat requirements and then everything else in Vigor" Yeah, that's very much how this game works XD It was how I was able to make my Level 100, use almost anything in my inventory build. It was all about meeting the broadest range of base stat requirements with just switching talismans and the occasional helmet to wield almost anything I got in the game. Upgrades are where your damage really comes from in a lot of instances, and until that weapon can A or S scale your favored stat, best just keep upgrading it and not make the heavy investment yet XD
Performance on 5600X, RTX 3070: no issues at all in 250hrs. Running reshade and a mod for increased fov and unlim frames too. Camera is abysmal (for every Souls/console game in general) --> thus using fov mod, otherwise I simply cannot play. Always playing on MnK btw.
I think Cowboy's word for the entire video is "cheeky". also, I bricked Ranni's quest by smacking Seluvis and recovered from it with absolution at Turtle Pope's chapel. she showed back up!
I am 100 percent on board with the taking health away if your message is disparaged. That's an awesome idea. If it heals the person who wrote the message, there's no reason to respond
About 51 minutes in, you're taking about quest trackers, and something like the morrowind quest journal would work great here. It kept track of things, but wasn't literally a giant arrow pointing you in the right direction.
Envoy Longhorn is probably my favorite weapon in the game. Love hearing that cowboy is enjoying it. That weapon eats bosses especially death birds and dragons
I started running longhorn bubble with the mask and it increases bubble skills and it's insane how much damage you can do to big enemies. Started using it about 2 weeks ago
Do you guys have issues with lag during intense fights? Rolling or jumping? Even weapon arts? I don't know but i plenty of stamina. I can hit jump or roll 3 times before it does it! Only in high action times not in middle of nowhere?
The hot tip regarding playing the PS4 version on PS5 is totally true. That’s how I’ve been playing. It’s ridiculous that I felt the need to do so though. When you look at Forbidden West on PS5 it’s pretty obvious Elden Ring is leaving A LOT of power unused on the PS5, and it’s pretty annoying.
Thanks for this guys, I have had no running problems so far with the game on pc's. I have a new Alderlake i5 12600k with a 3070Ti card running at 1440 with dsr enabled and the game looks fantastic, no problems. I have my old rig still running in my loft room with a i7 4790 and a GTX 1070 card and that is running at 1080 and that runs the game good too. I am using keyboard and mouse though on the game not a controller, I found some good settings on the net to use, still getting used to the setup yet though but getting better. I stopped watching your video when you started talking about spoilers, maybe later.
I've never really had issues with the cam angle. I honestly think it's an adaptability thing. The lock on issue is not a cam issue. Also, people use lock-on way more than is healthy. You can do the whole game without using lock-on.
I love to hear discussion about this game. I've been a mediocre gamer since ultima online in 1997.. I like to explore and play with fun builds. Never great at pvp or serious raids... Elden ring is the most amazing game I've ever seen. It's utterly amazing, mysterious and occasionally frustrating.. I love it!
There was one point where I could manipulate my camera to where I could see inside my character's head and it was hollow, but I could see his eyeballs and the optic nerve coming from his eyes. It was very strange.
From everything I've seen/experienced (playing on PS5, watching content creators on PC) my takeaway is that the performance on PS5 generally speaking is better (fewer frame drops, less stuttering, etc.) but the graphics are much better on an optimized PC (albeit with the occasional drawback of those frame issues).
6:09 I have the same experience. The sudden freezing and speeding up was very atrocious on my 3080 8700k PC. Played through the rest of the game on a gtx1660ti laptop and it was actually more bearable, something is still very weird about this game's engine
New to all this to be honest, however...I found Elden Ring (never played any of the others) and loved it but was terrible at it not knowing wtf I was doing or where I was going...so frustrated I found and followed FC's walkthroughs...this is the best game I've ever played. So, just a quick thanks to FC for his content.
Dude 400 hours how the hell did you find that much time to game to put 400 hours in shit that’s insane man I wish I had that much time on my hands to game all day
Setting the game on high performance worked like a charm. I’m on a fairly average acer nitro laptop but only had maybe 2 crashes. But then I know nothing about PCs.
I was like "lemme watch this when I fully finish the game" 2 months later and 300+ hours in fuck it. I'ma just watch this. Still haven't beat the game who cares about spoilers tho at this point lol I've enjoyed the game too much
@fightincowboy helped me become a better Nioh and Elden Ring player. Dark Souls and Seikiro were not my type of games because they were hard to me. This guy simplified Elden Ring and Nioh 2 for me and now I am just good at them. Bring on the next Souls or Nioh game
Good looking out Rurikhan with the spoilers disclaimer. Real life delayed playing the game, just getting to these parts now. I am actually a subscriber of FCB but he rarely does a spoiler disclaimer.
''If you use summons, did you really beat the boss?''. As a filthy summoner, I must admit the answer is; no. I was standing far away spamming Comet Azur while mimic was tanking.
on the subject of quest logs, I would like a journal to track conversations. Instead of a quest log, just let me read through the conversations again instead. This helps keep track of lore, and if you take a break for a week, you would still know where you are when you come back. I would be upset if they straight up put a quest log in though. Is that weird double standard?

Don't get me wrong, it's a 10/10 for me and I will replay it immediately (to me Souls games are always better the more knowledge you have), I'm just saying there is still a place for a more focused, 60 hour experience "metroidvania-esque" Souls games like Bloodborne or DS3.
At the end of the day, I can't pick between Elden Ring and Bloodborne for my favorite game of all time. And that says a lot about Bloodborne. I think ER is overall the better game but the gameplay and themes of Bloodborne is just.. perfect.
Punisher? No no no. He (Dung) punishes EVERYONE. There is very little crossover
Probably there will be a lot of refinement of the open world mechanics in the DLC over the course of a few years, and then in another half-decade or more a spiritual successor will arrive.
@@logabob and everyone will have to learn new names for the same dozen mechanics, all over again.
Yessssss,. an hour and a half of Ruri talking Elden Ring lore and everything else, my body needs it
One point I agree with early in this video is switching targets while locked on.
I couldn’t get into sekiro way to grueling for my taste
Fax, I was hoping elden rings combat was similar to sekiro.
It was nice having you at work with me guys! From an unlikely listener in Quebec, Canada! Love both your content!
Lmao! 🤣 FightinCowboy's such a character lol so hilarious I remember ppl being legitimately upset also that he obliterated Malenia on his first try lol
People are dumb and forget that Cowboy is really good at games. I learned how to play Nioh 2 well by watching his videos.
For Frost, the buildup scales with your Int stats but the damage I think is fixed unlike with Bleed
Yeah my thoughts exactly. The camera is great. The target lock is weird...it picks closest to center screen rather than closest enemy.
Didn't expect Ruri to namedrop Etrian Odyssey lol
I am pleased. Such a great series of games.
The performance problem is random AF lol, I only have RX 570, frame rate drops happens but I never have a loading crash for a single time
2 great creators representatives of both monster hunter and souls.
Im playing ER on my base PS4 and I had no problems at all. 270 hrs played.
I really enjoyed this video, the discussion, hearing your take, everything! Please do another one soon!
Just because u used a summons doesn’t make it automatically easier. There’s a lot of factors the summons level whether u buffed which talismans which ashes and armour. U can use summons and have a harder time than someone fighting solo who uses oped weapons buffs etc
i have 150 hrs in elden ring . beat it . i have 5800x and 3070. played at 1440p at maximum settings at 60 fps constant . the only frame dip i got was at first tree sentinal and the bonfire to the first troll when he jumps from above before margit . apart from that game ran smooth till the end and only one crash for me in those 150 hours . i think some game engine doesn't respond well when you are doing fifty things at once , recording while playing etc or even at 4k . people have 20 different devices connected to their cpus to make matter worse . acg complain about bugs a lot while he has 50 usb ports with other devices connected. its not the games fault all the time when people complain that they have 3080 and game is not working well etc . yeah some games are buggy when they release like arkham knight , unity , witcher 3 but it's not at that huge amount that people complain about
Hey Ruri, you didn’t crashed Rannis quest by killing Selvius. You just didn’t talked to the miniature Ranni 3 times down at Ainsel River.
The parts of Elden Ring I hated the most where the acrophobia inducing ledge balancing sections. Gelmir Hero's Tomb, the Caelid Tower, the Carian Study Hall. The pit down to the three fingers werent so bad for me for 3 reasons:
1, You dont really have to fight so if I died I wouldnt need to reapply a rune arc.
2, I go there after ive spent most of my runes so it doesnt matter if I lose my small change.
3, You're supposed to be falling down, wich doesnt feel as bad as trying to not fall down.
It wouldve been a lot worse for me if you had to climb all the way up instead pf dropping down.
Damn… I’m at 80 hours in on PC and I haven’t experienced a single crash. My sessions are probably much shorter than yours though.
I played on the PS4. Had really no issues graphic wise. But trying to summon people is a nightmare.
Finally someone talked about the camera and the lock on
Epic collab!
Great conversations, I consider you both the reason I got so into the souls games, Thank you Rurikhan!
The teleported chest dungeon, there’s actually three separate instances but one is shorter and has no loot. I know because I meticulously marked every single instance with rainbow stones and wrote down which colors were where, and tested every single chest in the whole place.
Great discussion! I'm like 120 hours in and still feel like I have a good deal more to do, this game is exactly what I hoped it would be.
I agreed with you for about 100 hours. Then i got bored as fuck, realized the open world is as horseshit as every other open world, and the pvp is utter garbage
@@yoloparrot42 Bullshit.
@@yoloparrot42 PvP is amazing
Couple of awkward moments in the first 20 minutes where you can tell Cowboy is thinking "Nah, that's not a problem, you just aren't that good"
Not really. Camera sometimes is indeed total jank during combat. No question about it.
So your hammer at base also scales at C with strength. Once you make it heavy sure it's probably a B but the same can be said for the Prelates hammer.
Cowboy and Rurikhan both get slammed for using the "OP tactics" XD Peeve has the same issue when his first PvP build was oriented around the Moonveil, because at the time he was using it, not EVERYONE was using it XD
People need to get over this Summons thing.
Loved this video u are 2 of my fav streamers keep up the great videos
I am 100 percent on board with the taking health away if your message is disparaged. That's an awesome idea. If it heals the person who wrote the message, there's no reason to respond
just in time to have it in the background playing while doing MSQ roulette :)
Wait so I wasn’t tripping when the playlist number vs the actual visible videos doesn’t match.. now I know
Thanks for this guys, I have had no running problems so far with the game on pc's.
I love it!
I feel like radahn was an experiment for more online games so I think that miyazaki might try a monster hunter type game which would be super cool!
You’re gonna need a bigger boat- Chief Brody in Jaws
There was one point where I could manipulate my camera to where I could see inside my character's head and it was hollow, but I could see his eyeballs and the optic nerve coming from his eyes. It was very strange.
From everything I've seen/experienced (playing on PS5, watching content creators on PC) my takeaway is that the performance on PS5 generally speaking is better (fewer frame drops, less stuttering, etc.) but the graphics are much better on an optimized PC (albeit with the occasional drawback of those frame issues).
I'm legitimately confused as to what people's problem with the camera in these game is, I've never thought the camera was an issue.
Same here
I'm so glad to have an explanation about the carian retaliation exploit. I was so confused I totally thought I was hacked or just lagged badly.
what if the camera pulls away in more open spaces, like how it was done in DES remake?
6:09 I have the same experience. The sudden freezing and speeding up was very atrocious on my 3080 8700k PC. Played through the rest of the game on a gtx1660ti laptop and it was actually more bearable, something is still very weird about this game's engine
I remember fighting pre nerf Radahn and it SUCKED felt like you were here waiting for when he decided to kill you.
I want to know why everyone oozes over BoTW. What did BoTW do for gaming?
I had the frame issues with the first Loretta fight at Carian manor on my first play through on PS4. On new game plus, no issues.
Good looking out Rurikhan with the spoilers disclaimer. Real life delayed playing the game, just getting to these parts now. I am actually a subscriber of FCB but he rarely does a spoiler disclaimer.
2 Legends in one video, love it already.
''If you use summons, did you really beat the boss?''. As a filthy summoner, I must admit the answer is; no.
I was standing far away spamming Comet Azur while mimic was tanking.
100% agree on the performance issues and camera problems. Other than that might be my favourite game of all time.
Two of my favorite souls RUclipsrs in one video.
on the subject of quest logs, I would like a journal to track conversations. Instead of a quest log, just let me read through the conversations again instead. This helps keep track of lore, and if you take a break for a week, you would still know where you are when you come back. I would be upset if they straight up put a quest log in though. Is that weird double standard?
