England won the World Cup in 1966 because Ramsey was not afraid of making controversial decisions (such as fielding Hurst over Greaves)... you have to be adventurous and daring when you are a coach in a major tournament.

I’m not defending Southgate who has failed to create any discernible pattern of play in multiple tournaments but there is no other league in Europe with the competitiveness and physical intensity of the premier league. It’s no accident that our best performances in a major tournament were in a mid season World Cup in Quatar. It’s probably made worse by the fact that we tend to value athleticism over technique so when the physical sharpness isn’t there the inferior technique is starkly obvious.

    • @Forksake82
      @Forksake82 5 месяцев назад +1

@@ianrichards1839 you say you're not defending Southgate but proceed to give excuses for him.
I don't think it's about players being more tired than lets say the Spanish.
The Spanish players play as many games domestically and in Europe until the very late stages consistently winning European trophies.
If we look at this tournament, England when they were behind raised their game and could argue looked physically fitter than the opposition but as soon as England were level, they sat back trying not to lose rather than use the momentum and go for the win and in my opinion that comes from the manager who is cautious.
Spain were superior and won every single game due to the clear structure and superb technical ability.
England limped to the final with arguably the worst football in the tournament and really Southgate should shoulder the blame and resign.

. I’m absolutely not defending Southgate. His failure in club football speaks for itself. He is the definition of mediocrity and was definitely a significant part of the problem but I’m old enough to know that England’s underperformance relative to the talent available in euro and world cups goes back way before Southgate. Every single foreign player who comes to the premier league comments on the unrivalled physical intensity and that every game is full on. At the top level even a 1% difference in sharpness matters. Do you think every problem has a single cause ? If only life was that simple.

We have seen with Deschamps, Southgate, Koeman, Martinez vs Nagelsmann and de la Fuente that the “old” pragmatic style of managing tournaments is dead. Only reason Germany wasn’t in the final is cause they met Spain early on. They would have dog walked everyone on England’s side of the group.
It’s moved on now, pragmatic and reactive is not the way anymore.

People forget the teams that finish in 2nd, 3rd, or 4th place, focusing only on the winners. So, let's stop treating Southgate like he's achieved top honors. It's hard to point to a single England game under his leadership that truly showcased the beauty of football. In fact, the style of play during his tenure often highlights how football shouldn't be played. With the talent in this squad, Southgate should have achieved much more.

All of the above names are world class imo they have proved this so far right upto the final. But as in football, the best team does not always win, or wins you trophies. I like the team too i am a England fan. When Southgate took over all those years ago, we had a team that was just been dumped out by Iceland rd16. That spelled the end of Hodgson then Allardyce came over did a game then bumped off. In steps Southgate , things change coz they have; 2018 semis, 2019 semis, then 2021 final lost, 2024 final lost. Kane was never a threat and why England were effectively playing with 10 men and explains why Bellingham was knackered, bent over at the waist gasping for air. For a start when the BBC tells us Southgate has 'revitalised the English team' is almost laughable. In stark contrast to Spain the 'Play off' stages alone the English team has scraped wins against nations with a COMBINED population of just 45mill compared to 60mill in England. None of whom have any pedigree in Footballing terms .. that is the sad reality. When you also consider the 'pool' nos playing the professional game in England, the first class stadiums, training facilities, the money that is poured into the game that attracts some of the best foreign players and coaches the result is still the same ... abject failure. When compared to other recognised 'footballing giants' of similar size ..ie Germany, Italy, Spain nations in Europe alone England is at the bottom. Sorry.

That's fine for a team ranked, say, 25th, but not a top-4 side containing a lot of top players. Southgate's coaching style mirrored his cagey, saved, penalty all those years ago - play it safe, predictable, and hope the keeper makes a mistake. Miserable..

Klopp would never except the fa cronies as his boss. Especially when Liverpool were paying him 20 million a year wages.

Gordon should have come on for Foden after the leveler. We would have had pace and aggression when needed. Another chance gone by, England will always be the bridesmaid if they don't get aggressive and control. Strongest bench in the tournament potentially yet drastically underutilized

Taking a group of world class players (?) and making them look ordinary is a skill that few possess, but SLOTHgate has managed to do it.

@@DanielCordone9 Every manager at the tournament would have loved to have had the England squad. If Pickford was the player of the tournament that's on Southgate. He's the luckiest plodder on the planet to be given such a roster and have no freakin' idea what to do with it.

Why is no one talking about Pickford just launching the ball forward all night? Southgate said you didn't keep possession well enough. How can you keep possession with your goalkeeper just lumping it to a sole striker with no support?
