Simple, if your team lacks AD, you go AD, if your team lacks AP, you go AP.
It’s all about flexing damage output. If you’re good enough on a character like Shaco that can go AD or AP (or even both), then you usually pick based off of your team comp. Hope this helped :)
Also he said in this video ad shaco tends to be more viable in lower elo and ap shaco in higher elo when people realize the potential of boxes and play around them properly
One also usually takes into account whether the enemy team has many players in range or not, if they have many players in range, you should go AD while if they are melee, you should go AP. This is because the rangers easily destroy your boxes and clones (before they hit them). on the other hand try not to play a lot of shaco AP unless you are a lone wolf and don't depend on your team to make plays, people in low elo don't follow the plays and usually die so much that they don't allow you to climb (Shaco AP needs to climb) (this is my opinion).
