I can't remember which video I saw first but with the combination of lighting, edits and androgynous hair and make-up, I was completely unsure who was male or female.
@@highjynxx I think in all the reaction videos to Ankimo songs the only three members that haven't been misidentified are Fuki, Jill and Ogawa 😁 As you've said the lighting and quick cuts in addition with the looks can really confuse the viewer.
Violin is perfect for metal. The connections between classic and metal are quite deep. Plus virtuosity is important to both classical and metal. The live of the song is even more badass.
Thank you guys for checking out Unlucky Morpheus. Their song Cadaver Redavac is indeed an amazing piece of music. There are some live videos out their where the violinist plays a greater role since one of the guitarists was injured and could not play, so Jill ends up playing the guitar parts as well as her own violin parts. Angreifer Live would be great for that. I've been listening to metal for a long time and this band made me realize how under appreciated the violin is as an instrument in metal. It works so well.
How Unlucky Morpheus came about.Guitarist Shiren started a band, in 2007, that did video game covers, called Magic Ninja. Which was made with 2 friends of Shiren's. One of the members was from a band called Light Bringer, and he took along the singer from Light Bringer, as Magic Ninja needed a singer, and that was Fuki. Magic Ninja only lasted a year before they split up, but Fuki had enjoyed working with Shiren so much, she told him she wanted to work with him again. So they started a side project called Unlucky Morpheus, which was just the 2 of them, and they were also in full time bands. As Unlucky Morpheus they did Touhou arrangement albums. Touhou is a platform video game series in Japan and very popular. What they did was rewrite the 8 bit track, make it more of a metal sound and give them lyrics. With Shiren doing all the musical parts and Fuki the lyrics and singing. After a while people wanted to see them live, which was a problem with there being only 2 members, so they asked some friends to help them out live. Slowly over the years they kept asking the same people to help them out. The bassist, Ogawa was one of the 1st, as Shiren had gone to music collage in Tokyo with him, and they used to hang out together. By the way Ogawa is really a Jazz bassist, and is still in a jazz band, he learnt a lot from Mikio Fujioka (Babymetal's Kami Band). Then the drummer Fumiya (male), who had also gone to the same college, but was 2 years below Shiren and Ogawa, but they never really met there. Then Fuki, playing with one of her many bands, found guitarist Jinya at a live show, and told Shiren to check him out. Then in 2014 Shiren saw Jill (violin) play live and knew it was a sound he just had to have in the band, they had always used a keyboard player up to that point. But the band was still a side project, with just 2 members. Then Light Bringer, in 2014, went in to hiatus and Fuki found herself without a full time band, and none of the other bands, she was in, looking as if they would go full time. Then in 2015 Shiren picked up an injury, tenosynovitis in his wrist, and in 2016/17 he dropped all his other bands, but kept Unlucky Morpheus going. Also in 2016 Fuki and Shiren decided to take Unlucky Morpheus full time, and asked the people that had been helping them out live, and sometimes in the studio, to join them. So while yes they started in 2008, they were not really a band until 2016, but with a big back catalog of music. Most of the members are in or were in other bands, with Fuki being the most prolific, with over 100 releases to her name, mainly full albums. Fuki is just a workaholic, she also does voice acting, she used to run a radio show, she has a kanji kentai level 1 degree, and she is a Sugino fashion college costume creation graduate, she makes some of the costumes she and the band wear and has done modeling in her spare time. Next try Angreifer ruclips.net/video/gGKWgM4IOgc/видео.html
this is such a pure and fun reaction video after a long time, thank you ! finally somebody that actually know music and appreciate the music in a fun way even tho you are new to this japan scene music!
Some Japanese bands, old and new. Take your pick: BAND-MAID [All their songs... really!], LOVEBITES [Break the Wall, Raise some Hell, and all the other songs], BABYMETAL [All their songs, because they are all different], MAXIMUM THE HORMONE [Yoshu Fukushu], DEXCORE [Earthworm], CROSSFAITH [Catastrophe], SiM [Killing Me], NINGEN ISU [Heartless Scat], UNLUCKY MORPHEUS [Unending Sorceress], YOUSEI TEIKOKU [Astral Dogma, Patriot Anthem (Live)] and their other band: DenKare [Detonator], COLDRAIN [Die Tomorrow], CRYSTAL LAKE [The Circle], GIVEN BY THE FLAMES [Ronove], LONESOME_BLUE [Face the Fear], ANGRY FROG REBIRTH [2Step Syndrome], SILENTLY SHOOTING TRAITORS [Manipulate], ALDIOUS [Dominator], TRiDENT [Ambivalent, Spoopy, ...], BRIDEAR [Light in the Dark], CINQ ELEMENT [Destiny], MARY'S BLOOD [Marionette], GRAUPEL [Bereavement], DOLL$BOXX [Take my Chance], SOKONINARU [Tenohira De Odoru], HELLO SLEEPWALKERS [Flying Saucer], TELECiDE [Tied up Memories], NEKO [Ghost on a Record], MARDELAS [G-Metal], MERGINGMOON [Greyen], ROTTENGRAFFTY [Hallelujah], JILUKA [Mephisto, Overkill], BROKEN BY THE SCREAM [Emotion Cross-Counter], FATE GEAR [Unbreakable Wings], LYNCH [Devil], GACHARIC SPIN [Mindset], DIR EN GREY [Ningen wo Kaburu], X JAPAN [Kurenai], DAZZLE VISION [Second], DEVILOOF [Torture], JUPITER [My Enemy], NOKUTO [Life of Desire], GALNERYUS [Angel of Salvation], SAISEIGA [Ride On], BLOOD STAIN CHILD [Del-Sol], NEMOPHILA [Rise, Hypnosis], DADAROMA [Lucid Dream], JILUKA [Overkill, or Lluvia], HANABIE [We Love Sweets], A CROWD OF REBELLION [Re:Create of the Re:d], PALEDUSK [Area PD], POLKADOT STINGRAY [any song], MUTANT MONSTERS [Abnormal], BLACKLAB [Insanity], ASTERISM [Rising Moon, Unravel, or Church], NOISEMAKER [Hunter or Prey], BiSH [The Night When Stars Twinkle], SCANDAL [A.M.D.K.J.], DEEP GIRL [I kill], Mrs. GREEN APPLE [Inferno], BRATS [Doudatte Yokatta], THE ORAL CIGARETTES [Frenzy Hey Kids!!], GIRUGAMESH [Drain], LiLiHoLi [From Darkness to Light], THE DEVIL’S KILLING MERRY-GO-ROUND [Diabolos], OTOBOKE BEAVER [Love is Short], and many many more...
As you've probably figured out from the comments, the drummer is most definitely a "He" much more than he is a "She". The vocalist has contributed to some insane number (60+?) groups songs. But, the true star of the show is Jill, the violinist. Unlucky Morpheus has a secondary group, Quadratum, which does instrumental versions of songs. My favorite is their cover of "The Dance of Eternity" by Dream Theater, where Jill plays Jordan Rudess's (the keyboards) part. If you aren't familiar, The Dance of Eternity has 106 time changes during the song. And yes, they do it live, as well as in the studio. Jill also does an amazing rendition of Eddie Van Halen's "Eruption", as well as Steve Vai's "For the Love of God" with Quadratum. Those may not be something that you react to, but if you accidentally see them on your own, you will be amazed. They also have a live version that include both the Eruption solo and the Dance of Eternity. These are all non-trivial musical expeditions. Highly recommended. Two thumbs up.
Drummer Fumiya originally belonged to "Garnerius". Vocalist Fuki originally belonged to "Light Bringer". Lightbringer's keyboardist "Mao" is a shadow member of Love Bites (collaborator in composition and arrangement). Galnerius' guitarist 'Syu' and Love Bites' 'Midori' are friends. In other words, Unlucky Morpheus, Love Bites, and Galnerius have a small connection.
Just like Unlucky Morpheus has multiple connections to BabyMetal, and other bands such as Gacharic Spin ( Doll$Boxx), and Yousei Teikoku (aka Das Feenreich). The metal scene is very tight/intermingled in Japan.
Add Fuki's Doll$boxx and the connection goes until Gacharic Spin too. And with Lovebites and their connection to Destrose you have Mary's Blood and Nemophila Fuki and Shiren were part of Dragon Guardian And Fumiya was live drummer for Hizaki, so connection too with Versailles and Jupiter. Unlucky Morpheus, Galneryus, Lovebites, LightBringer, Destrose, Doll$Boxx, Gacharic Spin, Mary's Blood, Nemophila, Dragon Guardian, Hizaki, Versailles and Jupiter, all of them, GREAT BANDS.
Wasn't Fumiya with Unlucky Morpheus before his short while with Galnerius? From what I can find he is with Unlucky Morpheus from 2015 and he was with Galnerius from 2016 - 2020. But yes, there is a lot of connections in the music industry in Japan, which is great.
This song is probably a good song to listen to for the first time, but it's true that the violin is not very prominent. To appreciate the amazing skill of the violinist, you should listen to "Far Beyond The Sun" by Quadratum, a group consisting of UM's Gt., Violin, Ba., and Dr.
They started out as an independent group with 2 people (both vocalists) doing covers from the Touhou series (wiki touhou project), they later started to add people and started to write their own music as well. I think the full lineup was completed about 2015 or so although the violinist wasn't officially part of the band yet from what I can see. They are actually still a completely independent band and do most things themselves. I believe Fuki makes some of the costumes for example. This track actually doesn't show the violinist that well, Jill is amazing and without a doubt the reason I kept going back to them. I wasn't the biggest fan of Fuki's (the female vocalist) in the beginning just because I am not the biggest fan of high pitched vocals and her (very Japanese styled) heavy vibrato. My recommendation would be the live version of "Angreifer" that is on their channel, but there are some other great ones. Cadaver / Redevac is a great choice, I recommend the sheet music version ([Official Video] Unlucky Morpheus - 「CADAVER」「REVADAC」+sheet music). Even if you already know the cool thing about those songs (they are actually 2 different tracks on the album), it's still very much worth checking out. Some of their touhou project covers are amazing as well, I would recommend the live version of その魂に安らぎを ~ Dignity of Spirit ([ Official Live Video ] Unlucky Morpheus - 「その魂に安らぎを ~ Dignity of Spirit」) They also have a subunit without both vocalists called "Quadratum". I would probably check out the full band for a couple of songs first, but Quadratum is very much worth checking out as well. They have released 1 album with covers. 1. Far Beyond The Sun (by Yngwie Malmsteen) 2. The Dance Of Eternity (by Dream Theater) 3. Into The Arena (by The Michael Schenker Group) 4. Hundreds Of Thousands (by Tony MacAlpine) 5. Scarified (by Racer X) 6. Eruption (by Van Halen) 7. For The Love Of God (by Steve Vai) 8. Technical Difficulties (by Racer X) 9. 17th Century Chicken Pickin' (by Impellitteri) I highly recommend the video off of their channel titled "【Live Cover】Eruption(Van Halen) ~ The Dance of Eternity(Dream Theater)" Also as others have stated, the drummer is a guy. The only female members are the vocalist (Fuki) and the violinist (Jill). But tho be fair, the drummer (Fumiya) has somewhat of a "visual kei" thing going on, I can see from the quick cuts how you would think he's female. It can sometimes be very hard to know in visual kei bands especially, I was fooled by guitarist Hizaki (from the band Versailles among others) on multiple occasions.
YES on the sheet version of Cadaver/Revadac, you can see that the guitars and the violin are playing the music exact while the drums and vocal are the only parts that are different.
Finally, UM is one of the best bands in Japan in my opinion, the live version of this song is even better. I recommend 《angreifer》 live as the next one🤘🏻🔥
Congrats on finding Unlucky Morpheus-one of the best, most creative bands in the world today. They remain independent by choice, in order to retain complete artistic freedom. They started off in 2008, focused on making soundtracks to video games and anime. They went through a lot of different stylistic phases, but the big transformation was when they brought Jill (violin) on board. Like many Japanese bands, they sound incredibly clean and tight live. My top suggestion for a live clip: “Angreifer” ruclips.net/video/gGKWgM4IOgc/видео.html Meanwhile, amid the (justified) excitement over the Japanese all-female metal bands, we forget there are plenty of guys who throw down. Shiren, founder and one of the guitarists, also does the growls. Fumiya (Drums) is, as you saw, insane and inexhaustible-one of the best rock drummers in the world. Jinya (G) and Ogawa (B) are top-notch as well. Basically, this band is a technical monster. Fumiya and Ogawa also have interesting, “beast” personae which contrast with the “beauty” of Fuki and Jill. That contrast is a deliberate trope, similar to the “Beauty and the Beast” imagery of many European symphonic metal bands. Fuki (lead singer) is a legend in Japan, and one of the busiest artists anywhere. She is also lead singer for UM, Doll$boxx, Lightbringer and her own ongoing project, Fuki Commune. Her style is very much out of the Japanese classical tradition, with the oversold vibrato and intense high notes. She collaborates with a lot of the top musical talents in Japan. Jill (violin) also has a busy dance card, including collaborations with Fuki and others outside of UM. Jill is actually my favorite member of Unlucky Morpheus. I consider her the best rock/jazz/metal violinist in the world today, and probably the best since Jean-Luc Ponty. After Shiren (founder, original lead guitarist) started suffering from an injury that limits his playing, they rewrote a lot of his solos for Jill. Hard to come up with another violinist who could pull that off. Here are links to instrumentals featuring her in UM’s instrumental project Quadratum: Cover of van Halen "Eruption" ruclips.net/video/eTb0TQtVT6k/видео.html Cover of Malmsteen "Far Beyond the Sun" ruclips.net/video/E2hZDzJp9Pc/видео.html Cover of Dream Theater, played blindfolded: ruclips.net/video/8eZVVtaOBKk/видео.html I saw UM live in London in 2019, when they headlined Metal Matsuri. Great show, and the chemistry between Fuki and Jill was electric.
Their looks are quite androgynous haha but actually only 2 women, the singer and violinist. These kind on bands probably more dark, androgynous and even gothic are called Visual Kei inside the japanese rock scene
My 3 favorite singers in Japanese metal is first Asami of Lovebites, then Marina of Mardelas, and of course Fuki. I had already known Fuki when she was with Light Bringer with Mao a friend and composer with Lovebites, and Marina was with Destrose where Miho and Haruna of Lovebites were with as well.
Excluding the obvious - not so much in this song compared to other masterpieces they have, I saw some comments suggesting most of them - the most amazing this is that, as far as I know, they write their own songs, make their own videos and are not signed with any record company.
Other than my world class crush, Jill, I’m a fan of the guitarist Shiren. He has also been in another band I really like a lot called Yousei Teikoku. The really awesome stuff from them is available to see on RUclips, but it’s so heavily copy protected you will not be showing it on here, so please enjoy the videos on your own. I don’t want you to miss out on them because of stupid laws.
Welcome to Valhalla should be your next for current music from them. However, for more on the drums and violin, "Eruption/The Dance of Eternity". Jill picks up Eddie Van Halen's part and then Jordan's key parts.
Keep on digging their stuffs and you will be amazed on how skillful Jill is on violin... if you think their duel guitar solos are great, you are yet to witness their full strength when Jill join in the solo duel. She is a beast and her role in this band is lead violinist. Jill is also a member of Rose Noire, a gothic duo with his brother as vocalist, and Quadratum, a sub-band of Unlucky Morpheus (all 4 members are the UM members) focusing on instrumentals.
You are one of my favourite reaction channels because you clearly just love music like only true musicians can. I'm trawling your back-catalog and its pretty criminal this seems to be the only reaction so far to Unlucky Morpheus/Ankimo/あんきも. When you're ready to do another I'd suggest Tower of Blood live (ruclips.net/video/PTuWOWF_0r8/видео.html) for the full violin experience (aka "16th century troubadour meets death metal"), or the classic「CADAVER」/「REVADAC」compositional feat you mentioned (ruclips.net/video/_yrNRhIreyE/видео.html). Keep it up! (PS: rn streaming Watch It Burn and loving it for the Maximum the Hormone vibe)
Nice reaction. If you like speed metal, I recommend "Knight of Sword." That should be the next Unlucky Morpheus song for you. They have so many great songs with variety. Enjoy discovering! 🤘
Their music is full Metal, but when it comes to the song and the singing its a typical Japanese style songs...not like LOVEBITES, NEMOPHILA, BAND-MAID, HANABIE...
@@michaelthain4488 Both are really good, but I much prefer the live version because those tracks are obviously not easy to play (and the video is longer).
as far a Jill, the Violinist goes...Shiren, the writer/guitarist developed a muscle issue where he can't hold his guitar for a long time....including leads. so, how to deal with playing live? enter Jill. she plays his parts *note-for-freaking-note* live. seriously. check out the live version of this song. Jill will *destroy* you.
Contrary to initial impressions, only the vocalist and violinist are women. The general rule of thumb when it comes to japanese stuff, if it's not very obviously a woman then it's probably just a pretty guy.
I agree, but with some Japanese male musicians, it can be awfully difficult to tell the difference. Just look at Asa, the bassist from Wagakki Band. Probably the prettiest dude I've ever seen.😆 He had me fooled for a couple of videos.

9. 17th Century Chicken Pickin' (by Impellitteri)
I highly recommend the video off of their channel titled "【Live Cover】Eruption(Van Halen) ~ The Dance of Eternity(Dream Theater)"
Also as others have stated, the drummer is a guy.
Unlucky Morpheus - Angreifer Live Next?🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻
Keep the unlucky Morpheus coming, as well as love bites ,
Thanks for nice react! I think This band is so underrated.
My top suggestion for a live clip: “Angreifer” ruclips.net/video/gGKWgM4IOgc/видео.html
Meanwhile, amid the (justified) excitement over the Japanese all-female metal bands, we forget there are plenty of guys who throw down.
Here are links to instrumentals featuring her in UM’s instrumental project Quadratum:

I saw UM live in London in 2019, when they headlined Metal Matsuri. Great show, and the chemistry between Fuki and Jill was electric.
Their looks are quite androgynous haha but actually only 2 women, the singer and violinist. These kind on bands probably more dark, androgynous and even gothic are called Visual Kei inside the japanese rock scene
You guys should react to their live performance
The drummer is badass
Spartan Army is one of my favorite songs by them even tho there’s no lyrics in it, it’s so amazing. Probably the most violin prominent song too
Welcome to Valhalla should be your next for current music from them.
Awesome band 🥁🏆
I want to see your guys reaction to First Fragment-In'El, their musicianship is something else
Nice reaction. If you like speed metal, I recommend "Knight of Sword." That should be the next Unlucky Morpheus song for you. They have so many great songs with variety. Enjoy discovering! 🤘
Dignity of spirit (live) and Cadaver/Revadac are good ones.
The drummer is a dude and the band has posted drumcam videos (I think this as well)
you should react to their live stuff, song Angreifer is good one
Check out just the band doing a cover of Dream Theater Dance of Eternity.
Awesome reaction
Live Cover: Eruption and The Dance of Eternity
Their music is full Metal, but when it comes to the song and the singing its a typical Japanese style songs...not like LOVEBITES, NEMOPHILA, BAND-MAID, HANABIE...
Please do reaction song called "Reason" , collabration between Yuki (Unlucky Morpheus) and Syu (Galneryus). Yuki vocal is insane in that song.
Fumiya, ex drummer from Galneryus
next reaction plz do a live of there’s
and where is the last third?))))
Where do I donate to your new 👓 fund? 😜 🤣

Both are really good, but I much prefer the live version because those tracks are obviously not easy to play (and the video is longer).
@@MaartenT I agree
Yeah........ I don't think the drummer is a gal LOL
as far a Jill, the Violinist goes...Shiren, the writer/guitarist developed a muscle issue where he can't hold his guitar for a long time....including leads. so, how to deal with playing live? enter Jill. she plays his parts *note-for-freaking-note* live.
seriously.
check out the live version of this song. Jill will *destroy* you.
Since you enjoyed Fumiya the drummer so much, here's a drum cam video of him.

Contrary to initial impressions, only the vocalist and violinist are women. The general rule of thumb when it comes to japanese stuff, if it's not very obviously a woman then it's probably just a pretty guy.
not she but fumiya the guy can beat drums.
HAVE YOU GUYS DONE, "THE WAGGAKI BAND", YET? A BLEND OF WESTERN AND JAPANESE INSTRUMENTS DOING: ROCK,METAL, BALLADS.
Yet another band where you need to tell someone, "Um... That's a DUDE."
(Referencing Asa on bass, of course.)
Long hair does not necessarily equate to female. Drummer is clearly a guy.
Because for the Makeup and hair style 😂😂
I agree, but with some Japanese male musicians, it can be awfully difficult to tell the difference. Just look at Asa, the bassist from Wagakki Band.
Probably the prettiest dude I've ever seen.😆
He had me fooled for a couple of videos.
The drummer, Morishita Fumiya, is a guy.
And used to play with Galneryus.
