- Among the first commandments God gives in the Bible is “Be fruitful and multiply,” but for some reason Christianity has narrowed the definition of sin to focus almost exclusively on “sex.” Christianity’s largest denomination, the Roman Catholic Church continues to insist that clergy live entirely celibate - a lifestyle that looks increasingly like a bizarre fetish in the 21st Century. Schisms of the church have occurred over the idea of divorce. A preponderance of Christian sects have led the charge against recognizing the human rights of the LGBTQ+ communities. John Hamer of Toronto Centre Place will look at why Christians seem to be sex-obsessed and offer ideas for overcoming Christian error and bigotry.

In ancient Rome surplus, unwanted children were either directly sold into slavery, or abandoned so that slave dealers found them. Either way, they became slaves. Children begotten in casual sex were very often enslaved. This may be one explanation for early Christians condemning recreational sex.

Well its both. Obviously the central point is the sacrifice to end all sacrifice, that Jesus died and suffered to redeem us and rose again.
Still, Paul *isnt* Christ and if we are assuming the Gospels are true or at least inspired I think Christs actual words supercede Pauls interpretation. Jesus' advice and example on how to live *in addition* to how to believe in Him, reveal the true Christian ie "they shall know you by your fruits". Many so called Christians today- (primarily certain politically involved Evangelicals driven by power and greed) are morally and spiritually repulsive.
Jesus protected the vulnerable and ate with underdogs and scapegoats of society. He discouraged wealth, especially passive wealth from rent/lease, or interest. He had no beef with the state apparatus, rather he called out the entrenched religious leaders who cared more about rules than people. He sought to understand and truly loved people, and he basically put the Sermon on the Mount stuff about love as the priority commandment over the OT, as He fulfilled the law. He convinced people to leave their families and travel with Him in an itinerant band who freely shared resources and was egalitarian toward women. (Hell, even Paul had a female disciple who followed him, cut her hair and dressed as a man).

Christ died so that we might LIVE....for we are saved by grace, through Faith...and Faith without works is DEAD...We don't 'worship' the death of Christ...we believe that He came to fulfill the Law by becoming Sin, was killed on the cross and has been raised from the dead

Many religious institutions need to be audited and investigated. Many churches are cesspools, many should be closed down. Some act as businesses and should be taxed. Many are unchristian to the highest degree. As a non religious person I cant ever trust a religious organization. But much respect to most religious people and I like this channel for the honesty and integrity and focus on historical fact. Good on you.

But the Tolstoys used to say a prayer of thanksgiving before sex. There is no place (except perhaps Hell) where God is not present. To say that some of these toxic pastors have no place in our bedrooms, would be more accurate.

If I go up to heaven, you are there. If I make my bed in hell, you are there." (Psalm 139:1,7-8) Even hell itself (or Sheol, more accurately translated) is not beyond the Most High's reach. If the pastor says that occasional sex is a good thing, he has no place in the church. Even psychologists know how harmful occasional sex is. Pastor with super low morals is no pastor
Until a few years ago I was a very conservative and devout Catholic and the version of Purity Culture I went through as a guy in my late teens and early 20's was nothing short of brutal, it was all about not giving in to "impure thoughts" and when I inevitably did I had to confess them to a priest and I did that very often.
This is the one thing I'll probably never forgive my former church because I was basically allowing celibate men to control my sex life while reports of all the abuse going on in that institution were coming out and now I can see why so many have left over that as mentioned here (before that I was made to believe it was just "a few bad apples"), I'm still trying to recover from what others may call Catholic Guilt and reading how some of the early Christians really hated sex has explained so much for me.
Also I took Matthew 5:27 literally (except for the eye gouging) and I used it as justification for that repression, it's one of those passages I was probably taking out of context alongside the Onan story in Genesis. The rules I got were so convoluted in some aspects that at one point I wondered how was I supposed to get intimate with a partner without commiting a sin that would lead me to hell and the most extreme interpretations I've come across seem to treat sex as a necessary evil.

No I'm not a Christian I used to be many years ago but I got tired of being told I'm sinful and if you don't believe exactly what we believe you're going to hell. What's always seem to odd to me is that for a small mistake on earth you can be confined to hell for all eternity. Duh that just seems so weird. What kind of denomination were you in that doesn't offer absolution to sinners? The Church that Jesus Himself established, the Catholic Church, offers absolution from all sin and forgiveness to all sinners.

As a non-Christian European, I came to listen because I was looking for perspectives out of interest for historical re-enactment. In addition to that, I found a comforting and balancing window into modern Christianity. The U.S. political right wing fanaticism does so much harm to the image of the whole religion across the world, because it gets in the media so much. It was really nice to catch a glimpse of a more compassionate version.
Also it's in the media all the time, but it isn't real. There are not a lot of fundamentalists in the US, American Christians tend to read the last chapter of the bible and stop there. Evangelicals, for instance, are often called fundamentalist christians by the media but you can't even classify them by church because the variation is so great, and american religion is so nebulous that the churches and what is taught are always changing. The most extreme right-wingers seem to be atheists, or only recent converts to denominations like orthodoxy or catholicism.
Compared to Europe, it's nothing. Americans are so much more moderate and tolerant than Europeans, you guys are true savages.

But luckily we have a wide enough separation of "the church" i.e. religion in general and the state, so that individual people are a little bit less likely to get hurt. I hope.

Purges, parades, propaganda, etcetera? It seems like in Europe, the people that are forming the rapidly-growing backlash parties are more nationalistic than religious.

@@radix9629 That is generally the case. Rising above one's circumstances necessarily means putting behind the tendency to wallow in the mud. Twenty years ago I went through bankruptcy. End of a bad marriage I walked away with nothing. Twenty years of working as hard as I could, doing whatever job was necessary - lots of blood and sweat. I am now just about 60 years old, have a house which is just about paid off, have a nice retirement fund set aside. Within five years I should be finished. And this was not done by working high professional jobs - whatever I can. Life is suffering - you put that behind you and build your own path in life. (My ex-wife from back then lives in misery and complaints about injustice etc etc. She has nothing in life put now a history of welfare, drugs and abuse.)

I'm glad to see this lecture, because for the life of me, I've never understood the Christian obsession with other's sex. It really didn't seem like anything Jesus obsessed over in the same way some modern Christians do. I wish more Christians would obsess over the Golden Rule (Matthew 7:12), Charity to the poor (Luke 12:33), and the other sentiments that Jesus did seem to care about, rather than sexuality.

That's the sad thing is how Christianity fixated on sex, but there's so much more. Like not doing things good when it's in one's hand to do good. Speaking up for those that can't speak for themselves, etc. We are sexual beings which there's responsibilities with sex no doubt. But, I mean it's a primordial desire.

I have noticed Christianity’s obsession with sex because I grew up in an overwhelmingly Catholic environment but finally was able to extricate myself from it. Sex was a huge part of the Catholic school and church discussions. Eventually the horrors of abusive sexual behaviours of the Catholic priests and other Catholics became public. I am glad that I escaped from this religion.
It is an evil philosophy.

Just claiming to "know" what or who "God" is is the epitomy of arrogance, in my humble opinion, let alone "knowing" what is proscribed or condemned by this "god". Any comment on the statement that the word virgin, referring to Mary mother of Jesus, is a mistranslation. I've heard that the original word refers to a young woman and not to one that has not had sex
Languages don't match each other neatly. In the Greek translation of Hebrew scriptures that was around when gospels were written (septuguint aka LXX as alleged 70 scholars) the Hebrew word that could mean young woman generally got translated into a Greek word specifically meaning virgin. Matthew's gospel was written by someone very keen to show Jesus as fulfilment of prophesy, and as a user of Greek likely tried to get an origin story for Jesus that fitted the version of Old Testament they were reading, and so the birth must be of a virgin.

First, let me say that I have seen and heard many of your lectures during the pandemic. I have enjoyed them and wish I can, some time, go to Canada and listen to one in person. I have some questions on this latest one: 1. You mentioned (as in the past) the Q gospel. I understand there is no scholarly agreement on the documentary hypothesis. Could you elaborate? 2. You mentioned Paul's letters. I have also heard, maybe you have mentioned it too, that some of those letters may not have been written by Paul. Are any of those among the ones you are citing? 3. You mentioned Jesus teachings related to sex. In one instance he seems to correct interpretation on what Moses said. How certain can we be that those teachings are not things placed there by the authors (not eye-witnesses of Jesus) or whichever group they belonged to? Something to think about: most of the screwed up, horrific beliefs of Christianity (and Islam) arise from a complete misunderstanding of a powerless tribe's weird use of religion as a culture preserving wall building tool. Unlike polytheism, which acted as a relief valve for diversity, Judaism held on to their culture by being truly sectarian in their religion (were they the first sectarians??). Anyway, the Jews incorporated what some polythestic priesthoods did regarding sex and circumcision. The jews would ALL be priests. THIS is where the obsession arises from. It's the same origin of Christianity's and Islam's murderous totalitarianism (honestly, Christians murdered more Christians for religious reasons than any ideology outside the 20th century). They misunderstood the radical sectarian myths in the Hebrew bible - think about Moses murdering thousands of his own people because they bowed down to the wrong statue, think about the word genocide being used in a . . . religious text?? Anyway, they took what were simply hyperbolic myths of a people (their stories are about a people, not really a god, think about Adam and Eve "losing land" . . . that's almost the entire Hebrew Bible: we LOST AND COULD NOT HOLD ON TO LAND) and made them universal. So now . . .ALL people (Gentiles) had to obey weird sexual obsessions, ALL people had to believe a certain way (or in some cases, literally be murdered). To say the horrors and sex fixations of Christianity is due to Constantine, pagan philosophers, etc is madness. Thank you for this very lovely and enlightening speech. I can understand things much better now. I was always conflicted as to why Christian teaching are so anti sex and sexuality. Since it is a biological and natural parfait of God’s creation. It has nothing to do with teaching of our dear Lord Jesus. I can appreciate real Christian way of life just like Jesus taught us. Thank you sir. I owe you so much for putting my mind at ease , as I always had a problem accepting this as mandated by the church.
I wish that I could agree with this speaker. The fact is that my sexuality and the expression of my sexual need does not align with a traditional view of the Bible or Christianity. Am I to determine that, because what I want in my body goes against a view that is thousands of years old, that older view is wrong? As a life long student of the Bible, I note multiple places where the speaker glosses over traditional interpretations; or asserts some modern and minority view as well established. I really wish I could agree with the speaker because after 67 years in this world, I have not been able to bring my life into alignment with the teachings of Christ. Honesty compels me to say, there is something wrong with me. I am weak and broken. I need God's forgiveness. What I want is different than what God says I should want. Because Christ died for my sin, I can ask forgiveness, over and over. God help me, and God help anyone who honestly seeks him.
It's more likely there is nothing wrong with you and there is something wrong with trying to fit your life and body to 2000+ years old understanding of human biology and sexuality.

If a man writes in the bible that certain acts are wrong, he is not to judge but to pray to Leviticus to judge.

Great explanation - I have come to believe that the new testament should be all the teachings of Jesus that would include the appropriate Gnostic scriptures such as book of Mary - Thomas and infant Jesus - and a separate book dedicated to the teachings of Paul which we can decide what is Christian and what is Tradition - not sure about Revelation and the book of James

The issues with sex are far older and deeper than you explain. Given the "blue sky" thinking of philosophers around the world, an easy divide to arrive at is between a chaotic world they live in and an ideal they imagine they came from. Starting from there, those drives that can be connected to a body part are assigned to "this world" and those where no body-specific connection can be imagined are considered more "spiritual".
Thus as you can die from not eating or drinking you will not die from a lack of sex. Further if sex is consuming your attention there is not much room for a lot else. As beyond personal enjoyment, children are the only other result, then sex in seeking children is the only "legitimate" result and any other sex is just indulgence. It is not unless one deeply observes animals behavior in the wild, that there is any appreciation of how much our drives and ideas of "spiritual" are as much inherited as it is among our animal cousins. Particularly with attention to breeding there are many paths fairly fixed in most species, however, while while fixed behavior in animals is considered "advanced" the species closest to the foundation of the group do not have "none of the advanced behavior" but all of them expressed randomly. In humans what is called "primitive" in all other animals is considered our most "advanced" case as we are free to choose among possibilities, but that is not from a blank slate but a choice among specifics each of which has been documented as specific in several species.
It is common among many bird species to find a life partner such as many seabirds (some same sex raising orphans) and never forming a second relationship. But there are also others like the birds of paradise that take up with a different partner in each season, and still others like horses or elephants that the male takes up the the herd of females that are the social base, or the sea lions that the females are attracted to the stretch of beach, and the males that fight to control the best stretch. Observing carefully you can see all of these playing out in humans even as the philosophers find pair bonding to be the most stable.
