There are two main fuels your body runs on: carbohydrates and fat. When you reduce that easy fuel source (carbohydrates), your body is forced to draw energy from body fat storage or utilize dietary fats for energy. There are many perks that come from reaching this fat-adapted state, and anyone can get there by changing their food choices and eating schedule. But how do you know you’re on your way? This video shares seven signs you are becoming fat-adapted.

Yes it’s true! I was a carb loving sugarholic. I never thought it would happen for me. It took me several months to lose my sweet tooth, and now even my craving for any simple carbs like chips, etc is gone. It does happen. If you haven’t gotten there yet, hang in there, you will!
Same here! I’ve been intermittent fasting and eating only carbs that come from dark green veggies and a few other things…no more daily candy bar..or cookies..or ice cream. I started this on 12/28. FINALLY I have discovered I no longer have that insatiable craving for sugar or bread. It is AMAZING! I’ve also lost 14 lbs and counting and my midsection roll is nearly gone as is the bra fat in back….its GONE! It is so worth “hanging in there” as you say…. I feel 10 years younger with no fatigue or brain fog and the need for naps is GONE!
My most noticeable difference was not becoming "hangry" from hunger anymore and being able to go much longer periods without eating.
This is the most realistic description I've seen. Most influencers are saying it only takes a few days to get fat adapted and it's just not like that. I tell people I'm like Willy Nelson's van, I burn old fat and grease.
TRUTH! Thank you Dr Becky! In five weeks, I went from 164 to 142 mostly due to 20+ hours Intermittent fasting and only sticking to fish proteins and selective green vegs like steamed broccoli and a daily mini avocado and drinking lots of water. Anything sweet has become a passing thought with lots of energy ❤❤❤
Thank you for the reminder, Dr. Becky. I do 2 meals/ day (6yrs now). I’m currently practicing to eat a keto style, at least 1 meal/day. I also printed, “what happens inside of you during a day of fasting.” It’s been helpful to my husband to know, since he does OMAD(6yrs now), that he will be fine. I put the paper on the refrigerator as a reminder.
LMNT is the real deal - I use the chocolate packets at night in hot water with a shot of heavy whipping cream and my night leg cramps are gone. And it's yummy! I'm not affiliated with them in anyway, just a fan. I do intermittent fasting by eating breakfast and lunch and skipping dinner. These little packets help me do that.
@@reneejones7807 Real deal? Maltodextrin, Magnesium malate, Potassium chloride, Stevia leaf extract? Not really real. And not really a deal. Very expensive.
I have been fasting and low carbs for 6-7 months now. Having lost 18# has made me feel better and has fueled my energy. I so happy I found you and appreciate all your information and support. Thanks
This was an excellent presentation.
Dr Becky I can't get enough of how you impart your knowledge that I can absorb and practice.
Thank you :). I appreciate your comments!
I’ve noticed how much better fresh produce tastes since I eliminated sugar from my diet. It took a few months but once my tastebuds recovered from the sugary foods I used to eat everything tastes better. I stopped eating ultra processed food about 15 months ago. I’ve lost 60 lbs. and feel fantastic. I encourage anyone in the early days of this journey to hang in there!
Just made a purchase of LMNT through the link you gave. It’s not always easy when it comes to discipline. Thank you for the video.
Yep, sugary items don't tempt me anymore. When I've had a bite of something I used to eat regularly, it tastes too sweet and sometimes tastes like chemicals to me.
This RUclips channel has been a wealth of information, thanks for the videos.
Thank you…I started my healthy eating journey this past Monday🎉
I love LMNT❤
Thanks Dr. B, you're the BEST. I'm grateful that hunger is no longer an emergency and that I can tell the difference between cravings and true hunger.
It has taken 8 weeks for me to reach a natural satiating feeling. I ate as much fat and steak as I wanted until I didn’t - naturally I stopped feeling hungry. I will have periods when I am really hungry but its rare. I just stick to the fat etc. Down 3 stone since 2nd December 2024 🎉
I'm so glad I watched this video. I started exercising and eating low carb and I feel sooo exhausted. It's nice to know that it can take 4-6 weeks to get fat adapted. I was about ready to give up until I saw this video. Thank you Dr Becky.
Yes. It's very freeing to know freedom from sugar addiction.
Gut bugs get hungry. Only feed the good ones.
I’m 3 x days in , probably not yet.
I’m doing omad keto … it’s very interesting .
Cheers from Australia ❤.
I have been practicing intermittent fasting (IF) and a low-carb diet for almost 10 years now, and everything mentioned has been true for me. Most sweets now taste too sweet, and I can easily resist them. I no longer feel tired after eating lunch and overall, I feel great and healthy. I have been able to maintain my weight and a body fat percentage of around 15% to 16% with relative ease thanks to IF. In my opinion, it’s one of the best health decisions I’ve ever made.
The effort is worth it!
Thank-you Dr. Becky. I hardly like the taste of sugar especially as I get to the bottom of my coffee if I had put a tsp of sugar in. Sugar tasted chemically. Not pleasant. I'm mostly just putting cream in my coffee or drinking it black. Tea... just some lemon juice. I'm liking those squat snacks you suggested every hour if sitting in front of the monitor too long. I don't find my reflection in the mirror in the morning repulsive now. Thank-you!!
As always . Great show 😊
Thank you for another amazing video.
Thank you!
It takes me forever to keto-adapt. I continue having cravings for at least 6 weeks upon giving up all carbohydrates. I suspect a lot of it is pure habit, psychological. I don't care about sweets at all, but pasta, bread, croissants, noodles - these drive me mad.
First thing I notice - I become very picky about the quality of the above carbs. Like only the best, most fancy breads and pastas are going to be haunting me.
Eventually, I have to stay strict for about two and a half months to completely become indifferent.
The three months of suffering is absolutely worth it for me, so bye bye bread and noodles!
sardine @ egg alternate each meal helped me to quit carbs do at least 3 to 5 days
Good review. Thanks ❤
Yes, a low-carb diet is the way to go.. 👍🏻 I've been on it for about a year and a half.. stay off all processed food.. eat meat and fish and vegetables and a little bit of the right kind of fruits..
Yes you're right if I had a candy or something it would be terrible.. 😰 I would spit it out.. most of the time I have one meal a day.. and yes I get a little hungry before it's time for my meal.. but I just have a carbonated water drink or some tea.. sometimes when lm Hungary, I'll eat a little bit of mixed nuts and some butter 🧈 🙏🏻
Quite a while ago. I weighed 235 lbs.. Now I am 175 lbs, I feel great and have lots of energy..
I love your videos. Thank you for being you.
I know exactly what you mean about sugary items. When I allow myself a "cheat day" I have often grabbed a sugary snack that I thought I had been craving...and found them so sweet they nearly made me sick.
It was initially hard to believe when it happened, but I now only crave food when I’m truly hungry, and I’m never ravenous anymore. I have experienced a small bit of cravings increase when I used artificial sweeteners, though even those are diminished lately after using only allulose and minimally at that.
Milk is sweet all on it's own. Don't worry if you're not losing quickly. Up your game. Intermittent fasting helps, but I started at 16 hrs, than 18 and now 20 hours, 3 times a week over 3 months. Very slow!❤
Oh, yes. Ate lots of sweets in the past. But now, sweet is TOO sweet. It actually HURTS. Berries are as sweet as I can tolerate. Or maybe a bit of honey. I still have an occasional hankering for vanilla ice cream. Or carrot cake -- but my lady makes it with about 1/4 of the honey that the recipe calls for.
As a Filipino, I eat rice on every meal. Now that I have lost 40+ lbs in 3 months, I no longer crave rice and sugar. I don't like sweets and breads as well. I only eat whole foods and ensure I get enough proteins.
I now notice the natural sugars in all my vegetables!
I now eat baker's unsweetened chocolate as "dessert".
will this diet be ok if i lift weights 3-4x a week?
So Dr. Becky ...
I have Long Covid and I suspect (since I started wearing a CGM occasionally last December) that LC interferes with fat adaptation. I eat mostly low-carb or keto, and track my macros enough to know that SOMETHING doesn't add up. (Noticeable difference during an LC "flare"). I somewhat suspected this because a LOT of early LC sufferers were people that normally wouldn't get THAT sick; athletes, runners, high-energy occupations, bodybuilders (I have a bench press in my LIVING ROOM, but CAN'T USE IT 😭 ).
Any suggestions on things that can help in those circumstances?
A pack of LMNT lasts me all day. I like the chocolate ones. In the summer I put one pack in a quart of ice water. They are to strong for me otherwise.
what do you suggest for people with no gallbladder?
I have a video on eating a high-fat diet without a gallbladder. If you search RUclips for that title with my name, you should find it.
As a diabetic I find it such a difficult balancing act to keep carbs really low. For example, last night I was running on 30g carbs but was awake at 5am with a super low blood sugar reading of around 48 (2.6 on the HbA1c scale). Needed emergency glucose before I passed out. Not sure how to get the balance right.
With carbs low you won't need much insulin. Once you learn the foods you usually eat you should never have the big spikes and drops.
5 months into keto my ketone levels (Keto-Mojo) hovered around 1. The last 2 months they have gone down to 0.1 and remain there. I assume I am fat adapted since I feel good and still have all the signs of being fat adapted. Besides. what else could my body be running off of since my daily carb intake is nearly zero?
Hello. Recently found your channel. I am doing an extended fast. With zero food, do we know how long it will take to become fully fat adapted versus 4 to 6 weeks? TIA
4 to 6 weeks anyway. You'll probably be making ketones by the second or third day but you'll still experience the flu and other symmptoms.
I love the narrative & listen to it at every opportunity. If only it were true! Doesn't reduce hunger or cravings; can barely lose a pound. Lots of docs admitting obesity is disease & the pathology is located in the brain. There is more than one type apparently. Keto hasn't made any difference in the dismal weight loss statistics. Why is it patting itself on the back all the time?
Is it okay to drink electrolytes during intermittent fasting? Will it kick me out of fasting?
You can drink electrolytes during fasting.
Former carb and sugar addict here. No cravings ever. Plant food doesn’t interest me at all. 2.5 years carnivore and thriving
Yes! I used to love chocolate...now it just tastes like brown colored sugared wax!
Is there any LMNT with NO flavor? My drinks already have flavor, (thanks ACV + lemon) so I don't want any more.
Yes. There is an unflavored LMNT (LMNT Raw)
Would you be able to do a video on how to do a reduced carb diet when you have high cholesterol, high LDL and are told by cardiologists you should not do a keto diet. ,,, i know I can eat vegetables all the time.. but yuck
I have a video on low-carb dieting and cholesterol. If you search for that with my name, you should find the video on RUclips.
Watched. Great info... but where does fruit fall into all of this???
Sugar is like a drug ----the more you eat ---the MORE you want ----Detox with apples
Only eat n drink in moderation. Exercise n fast
2nd comment: You say 4-6 weeks, which is legit for some people. Do you have any videos for people who need your help at 4-6 years?
You don't burn fat, you breath it out as CO2.
wouldn't waste my $$$ on overpriced, undervalued LMNT - with a bad form of potassium I would never knowingly ingest.
I make it at home with sodium, potassium and magnesium. It is delicious and I use higher quality ingredients than LMNT uses
@@judyfreeman5193 As long as you use potassium citrate rather than chloride that's awesome.
Citrate is the form found in our food and is safe and more readily assimilated.
@@judyfreeman5193 Please post how to make this what do you use for flavoring if anything

This doctor makes two claims I don't like:
1) That fat adaptation is indeed an adaptation. It isn't. We were born with the ability to use both fat and carbs as an energy source. When carbs are low, our body will use stored fat, and when they're higher our body will use glucose. You can keep carbs quite high, but a mild calorie deficit will see you lose body fat over time anyway.
2) Since you shed water when depleting carbs, you should buy her recommended electrolyte product. Sigh. Another expert peddling products you don't need.
Yeah. Plus, there's other ways to lose weight and fat without going into ketosis like so many of these RUclips faces try and coerce people into doing.
1. The use of the word adaptation is appropriate. It means to get used to something new. Alot of people are addicted to carbs and sugar and need to adapt to the changes they're going through.
2. There's nothing wrong g with making a product and recommending it and being enterprising. Everyone knows they're free not to buy it if they so choose. It wasn't even her product, it was a sponsor. Heaven forbid she should make a living after giving free advice.
You're being needlessly pedantic and unkind.
@wuzittooya Why are you even here? No one is being coerced into watching a youtube video. Unlike you, most of us are here because we're choosing to learn about something we think may work for us, as opposed to coming here just to waste our own time.
@@racheljames7 There we are. Ad hominem attack (pedantic & unkind) because I simply disagree with two claims in the doctor's video. You don't adapt to burning fat for fuel - your body does it naturally, automatically. It always has. And you don't need to buy daft electrolyte products. She's deliberately giving you a solution (store bought electrolytes) to a problem she tells you that you have 'not fat adapted'. It's nonsense.
