Just saw this video. My grandfather taught me how to make a rabbit trap similar to this when I was growing up. He called it a rabbit gum and I have not saw a single person who does The you tube who has made one the correct way. I 100 0/0 guarantee that I can make one that will catch rabbit but I'm not a tech kind of guy. This one is as close to my paps as amy I've saw yet.
More wire mesh on the sides. I am a old trap builder, and that is what I would do. You want the prey to able to see out as well. Makes them less nervous.
@@williambenner5550 Agree. Most traps are made from wire mesh. But if you watched other videos of this channel where Chris has used wire mesh traps, the smaller animals were able to steal the bait without getting trapped and the snowfall would cause issues. Plus Chris has already built a wooden trap in this video.
Use an outside trigger attached to the piece of wire that goes inside that has an apple hooked onto it. My grandfather used screendoor springs attached to the door and a trigger attached to the stick you have on the door. ONE piece of apple bait equals rabbit stew for supper. You don't need windows for the rabbit to peek at the treat. Too much bait information makes the rabbit nervous and he will seek food elseware. Cottontails by nature like dark holes to seek shelter and safety. Try comparing a no peek solid wood box to a all wire mesh box.
My german grandfather would grab the rabbit by the hind legs and rap the rabbit behind the neck with a sturdy cane. Their neck is very fragile and death is quick. He would prepare the rabbit and have it soaking in a salt brine within 15minutes. The next day it would be made into a stew with veggies and gravey that only my grandmother new how to make from memory.
Karate chop to the neck, they die instantly, now he cant demonstrate the kill or the cleaning though, that would get him flagged and demonetised by youtube.. not his fault, fake sjw would claim its animal cruelty for the purpose of profit and youtube is run by them, so there wont be any killing episodes, even cleaning would be risky tbh..
Salt! Salt is an excellent bait for rabbits, especially in the winter. We use it frequently in the winter when performing wildlife control for customers.
The box trap is what we made as kids. We called them "rabbit gums" ( An old term. I don't know where the phrase came from). Instead of the dado we used 1/2 square "sticks" for the drop door guides { 2 each side }. A slice of apple was a good bait. Also rubbing a cut apple all over it covered human scent and enhanced the bait. You don't want to eat rabbit until after the first hard frost so they will be free of micro parasites. In warm weather use them as stew meat to sterilize them well. a small hole in the end board will let in light so they can see the bait.
On new traps. You have to let them sit and do what we call soaking. Others might call it something else. Anyways what this does is it lets all oder from humans and new material remove itself from the trap and replace itself with the natural smells and orders from the woods. I'm from Florida and when setting any kind of fish, crab or any other kind of water trap we call it soaking. Not sure what it's called for forest traps. But either way you get the idea. We made new rabbit traps and it has to set for several weeks in the woods sometimes to get all un-natural orders from the trap. Hope you get this comment and hopefully it will help you on your traps. Good luck.
PEOPLE ARE COMMING AND YOU KNOW WHY..WE ARE IN THE GREAT RESET WHERE YOU ARE YOU ARE NOT TOUCHED LIKE WE ARE THANK YOU FOR SHOWING US A WAY ...WE MAY NEED THIS IN THE NEAR FUTURE YOUR THE BEST CHRIS
For a window may I suggest this, from an amateur woodworker perspective: 1 cut a rectangle in the side, whichever way you want or find easiest. 2 use a circular saw, raise the blade all the way clear, align it to where you want then make a plunge cut in the thickness of the side with the window. 3 use any transparent plexiglass (it yellows out in a few years) cut to the dimmensions that match the dimmensions of the window PLUS all the way to the top of the side wall. 4 secure in place with a screw or if you don't want too much metal, 1/4 inch drill through the whole thing and use a wooden dowel. Lexan doesn't chip when cut, unlike plexi which sometimes shatters. I got some small lexan panel cut-offs kicking around I can send you in an envelope if you want. Speaking of which, you should get a PO Box so ppl can send you stuff. Lures, knives, that kind of thing.
Yep wait till you get a big one Enjoyed seeing your son he should be on more often he is great for your channel. Let him know he is a good one...............
I LOVE TASTY RABBIT! A delicacy. You can eat them fried (like chicken), in stew (with red wine, like the French cook them) BUT just shoot them--quicker.
Full stop 😂. Reminds me of the traps my grandpa made years ago. Trigger mechanism and door was in a slot on it's own but yeah, I need to make a few new ones. By the way, ya do kinda have to weather them a few weeks, but leave em open and upright so the rain can get in
The rabbit was very cunning . Give him a pass. For my fellow americans shinny is a game of pond hockey. Great vid . the squirrel release had me cracking up !
Working together. What a great idea. I hope it speads to the rest of the world. Thanks for the fun video. We heard you are in lock down again. Stay safe my friend.
Spring loaded hinges from your local hardware store works great for the door on my traps I find them well worth the extra $ which is not that much compared to the benefit they provide.
Full stop! As always great work on the traps, the family time and on the ice! Only time I seen u move that fast was when u fell through the ice checking tip ups lol or bow drill fire
A much simpler and effective trap uses the " L" shape top of the trap. 2 nails for the hinge. Used a modified deadfall design for the trigger. Beagle clubs here in Maine made them to catch snowshoe hare to train pups. My drawings are older than you guys; don't know how to forward them. Would make a good upgrade video.
Personally I don't want to see a rabbit caught and eaten just to say you can do it. For myself, I just want to see the process of building the trap and how it works. You're right, it wasn't a survival situation and I commend you for showing us how you respect mother nature. Keep the videos coming!!!!
Love your videos man. Just a tip put something cedar bows covering the trop of the trap and the sides of the trap it’ll help I just caught one doing that I have a home made box trap to
My dad built a big box trap 2ft by 4ft, it isn't in use much these days, we caught a pair of skunks. Opened the door and ran like I had ticked off a horde of bees, didn't help at all.
Yeah, a catch and cook will be good. Rabbits are a big pest down here and are constantly threatening our native wildlife, I don't even think we'd legally be allowed to release a rabbit if caught. So a clean, prep and cook episode would be really good. Cheers.
"So here I am and I've got this wood and am going to build a rabbit trap".......... Err, Kevin? Good to have a little brother who knows what they're doing and can build stuff! 😃
He said is it good. 😂😂 It surprises me how so many people haven't eaten rabbits but i guess not everybody grew up with guns on ranch like me. Great video thank you and YES ITS GOOD 😅
Awesome job on the Trap you guys really ingenious idea. Man good to see Holden in a video it looks like he's grown 5in since the last video he was in. Good to see him interested in the outdoors and not cooped up inside on a computer! good on you Holden! Fresh air is good for you and you can learn a lot from your uncle and father. Anyways, love the video you guys I have also been checking out the ASMR Channel and there is some pretty cool stuff over there as well so good job all around.
Let it go . If you catch another you have proven it works and you are ready if you need that meal , until then let them make moor babies . We already know your teams ability to prepare in the bush . Definitely more of how to catch .
Definately CAnadian Design new and over complicated. We use a hollow log when available and old pine boards with a dropping "guillotine" style door. Catch a rabbit everytime we set it. Never used a hinge on a rabbit box in my life. Caught hundreds. You will catch some eventually.
That was a great video. Glad you let Foo-Foo go. But, I would like more clear direction on building that box trap. I might get hungry and need to catch a few bunnies. Can I have dimensions and how the trap door is tripoed.
It’s your trap in all and I’m not judging but I usually will screw on a scrap piece of wood to the trigger so it has more surface area But again your trap and it looks great
*Rabbits are trickier than I thought! Kevin's channel:* ruclips.net/channel/UClhInAMlPM1UcjD8lI4o7UA
You must have played some travel hockey Chris , looking like Sid out there
Vanilla extract for cooking rabbits love it put some at the back of the box and some on the wire to shut the door

Wow wow wow yeah that piece of metal to lock it. Thats dope.
The black squirrel looked really awesome!
I genuinely believe Kevin will be at 1m subs this year, his channels gonna blow up forsure
Modern Self Reliance is great. He’s living my dream. I’d love to own the land to build like that. He’s a kid just playing with his toys.
Thanks again for another great one!
Glad you didn't have to depend on that trap to survive. Yes, catch and cook. Thumbs up! 👍
The skating with family nice one
Full stop. My man has skills on the ice! Keep up the great work and thanks for the content!
I enjoyed and follow you for the last 3 year's keep going.
Me and my kids love your channel thanks to you I learned that you can pretty much cook any animal in a stew lol
Awesome video’s. Whenever I am tired of the city life imma go watchi your channeli. You’re being appreciated !
That is by far the most unusual box trap ever Bravo !
Yes! Catch and cook with Kevin, see what he thinks of the cottontail. Been a long time since i had rabbit. I love it, wife wont touch it. 😁
I love watching you two brothers !
im so glad i found this channel
Keep up the amazing videos. Just found your channel a few weeks ago and I’ve been bingeing it since!
I think you should add a carrying handle, or strap to that trap. Nice to see it worked so well.
Probably drilling holes on the side of the trap might spread the scent of all the goodies inside and help you see inside the trap
More wire mesh on the sides. I am a old trap builder, and that is what I would do. You want the prey to able to see out as well. Makes them less nervous.

great build i like that stove .
Found this channel through Fowler’s.
I live in sundridge and it’s absolutely awesome to see such great content semi locally.
I say catch 'n kill! Good luck with the next one!
Kid's got some moves. My boy would have a blast playing with him there.
Gotta eat em.
And feed some to Kevin.
Cottentails taste better then Hares...
BassAckwards Bushcraft I've eaten rabbit, but never hare. What's the difference in taste?
@@jimf1964 hare has a stronger wild taste
I think the meat on hares is not as tender too. But that could be that I tend to cook small wild game a bit more as a precaution.
“ I haven’t managed to eat anything other than road kill” dude you’re a mess 😂😆
That trap has Nobel Prize potential!
Last time I was this early, I still had self-esteem
I think I would like to see a catch and eat episode. Please emphasize the humane or quickest way to kill them and then how to clean them properly.

A bit over enginerded I like KISS

Yep, salt is a scarce resource in the wild for animals to crave

At the bottom of the door you can add anything heavy like steel that will make it heavy enough to close

I was a bit surprised at how good they are on the ice! 🏒⛸ Next time catch and cook cottontail

Big Chungus, you sound like Flair! haha
Big chungus would be a meal we need to tell Flair about this trapping method. I tink an ak is a little ovekill for rabbit tho
