      After the 7 minute mark you mention “0” throttle. Does that mean maintaining a stable throttle position until acceleration?

    Motorcycling is such a cerebral experience! Videos like this one provide the type of high quality monologue I like to have running in my noodle during every ride. The road stays interesting at any speed with valuable stuff like this to work on.

    I think this is a very important video.I think some folks believe trail braking is an all or nothing thing and it's not. I've spent a lot of time and energy researching the concepts of trail braking. Your videos have been very helpful. Its saved my bacon more than once on some downhill curves. They don't call the book your recommend Total Control for nothing. :)

    Probably your best video yet.
    Glad you added its fine to practice body position. I've had riding buddies pull me up on getting off the side when not needed. making assumptions I was trying to impress or I thought that was needed to corner, when I was purely working on getting comfortable in that position prior to going at a pace where it was required. My point never assume, all those guys may have been trying to add skill to the toolkit, unless you asked them you don't know.

    Absolutely fantastic content. Even though I knew all of this by now from my own driving, training, bike setup and track experience over the years, its still nice to see a video/content where everthing that is talked about is 100% spot on! Hopefully as many riders as possible will see this and learn something from it, well explained as well so should be easy to grasp.

    I agree. I believe you may have misunderstood my question...Of those 4 fundamentals, 3 and 4 are reversed at different points in the video. Just wondered which order was correct and/or if it really matters. Thank you though for responding, much appreciated.

    Great video.!
    Funny…the other day I was whipping through my favorite twisties (Hwy 41 between Atascadero and Shandon, California…try it some time) and found myself thinking, “What would Greg say to me if he was following?”
    Focusing on my lines. Seeking perfection. Building skill. Practicing every chance I get. And I’m a WAY experienced rider on the road. (Not the track.)

    Greg,
    Quick question and certainly not trying to sharp shoot you. In this latest video at 2:45 you mention 1) Vision 2) Throttle Control 3) Counter Steering 4) Brakes. At 3:00 the basic steps 3 & 4 are reversed. I keep a little notebook with what I feel are your best tips. What's your preference on steps 3 & 4? Thanks Greg and keep up the great job you do for us!

      My impression is that he was articulating his four fundamentals that can be applied (creating a group: “fundamentals”) that you can use and apply to circumstances as appropriate (i.e., tools in the toolbox).

    Great video Greg. I use to teach a number of boating related courses and I use to preface my courses by saying that I certainly do not know everything about being out on the water but what I am about to share with you you can take to the bank. I also told them they should leave this course knowing that there is a lot to learn about safe boating so you need to take additional courses. I find your videos are excellent and reinforce many riding principles and like my boating instructional days, a reminder to myself that I need to be continuing to learn by taking additional, or repeating, instructional courses on an on-going basis. And yes, “ I need to shut up and practice”.

    Great video thanks Fast Eddie but I do have a counter comment to a point you raise Sir. You mention you see the riders shifting there weight, centre of gravity and using “tools” they don’t need at the slower speeds when cornering. I do that. I do it a lot. I call it practice. It’s really help me hone my Corning skills whilst not under the added pressure of higher speed cornering and has allowed me to safely work on a number of areas like feet position, hooking the tank with outside leg, standing the bike up early out of turns, etc, etc. This has really paid off for me and was all much safer than trying to use these tools at higher speeds. Great work and please keep it up thank you.

    Thank you, I haven't been riding for about 6 years, got back on a bike and I am just not smooth any more. I brake before the corner, try to look ahead and estimate how sharp the corner is, which then leads to either going really slow into a tighter corner, or needing to lean or adjust more in corner, I do NOT touch the brakes in a corner as I am afraid it will stand the bike up or wash out the front. This helps me, I will try instead of braking hard, then committing, I will try to ease off and practice trail braking to get smoother.

    Great video as always, really helpful when you mentioned about practicing at lower speeds being a legitimate way to improve because as a new rider I always worry about pushing speed too much (already come off once), you’ve probably mentioned this before and I’ve missed it but thanks anyways

    Great video as usual. I raced motocross and flat track professionally in 70’s. Flat track no brakes. Anyway, I always buy bikes with as much electronic Nannie’s as possible. Stability control with lean abs/lean TC. Stability control mandated on cars starting 2012. I am sure it will be mandated on motorcycles soon. Euro 4 required ABS. Euro 5 required TC. Ducati and KTM 99% of their bikes stability control standard. USA always follows Europe. I feel I can trail brake longer and more effectively safely with lean sensitive ABS. Maybe you could discuss electronic aspects with riding fast safely. Thx

      I have gone through BMW car driving courses Spartanburg, SC M Classes several. We race with and without stability control at the very edges what a car can do or not. It’s amazing what electronic can do. Electronics make 200 horsepower bikes rideable no fighting wheelies and loss traction. I own a Super Duke and MV AGusta 800 rr Dragster

    Do you have a video on downshifting while breaking. For example downshifting as your coming to a stop. Thank you! For example your in 3rd and need to slow come to a stop. Would you advise to downshift and use the breaks simultaneously?

    It's understandable that the pace on tracks is much quicker. But what about grip? Does track have higher grip than other types of roads?

    Speaking about the riders in front of you leaning off their bike and you are going at a slow normal pace. Maybe they are practicing the movements needed for the faster turns without adding the level of speed. Is that possible?

    Does this work for freeways,I live in Northern California and have a few tight twistiest down the highway should I trail break at 70 mph around a corner I can’t see through.

    Are you using the clutch at all when trail braking? Is it needed when even just touching the front brakes?

      the clutch has nothing to do with braking or trail braking...only time you touch the clutch is when you're shifting

      When he said "zero throttle" he also said "brakes". Not supposed to use maintenance throttle when braking.

    At what point is it not worth riding to a twisty road? I live almost 2 hours away from any road like that and by the time I get to the mountains, I can start feeling my neck and shoulders start to get sore.

      I agree with Rolland. I just bought a cheap used enclosed trailer to haul my bike those longer distances. So now I can be in the comfort of my cage for the 2+ hours it takes me to get to some really fun roads. My son and I make a day of it and have a blast.

    What about the clutch ? When cornering i don’t use the clutch when i am riding in the same gear . Let’s say 4th gear . I just let go of the throttle apply brakes and then at the end of the corner i throttle back but no clutch at all . Is that okay or not? Please reply asap

      If your speed is good/enough for the corner you don't have to worry about the clutch or changing gears. When you are leaned over you want to avoid changing gears if possible that's why you make sure you're in the correct gear and at the right speed for the corner before you enter it. When possible I prefer to add throttle slightly as I go through the corner, which helps with the stability of the bike as well.

    Braking will tighten your radius. If you don't use your brakes in the twisties either A. Corner isn't sharp, or B. You aren't going into the corners very fast. When I'm at a fast pace I trail brake to tighten the radius get my bike pointed In the right direction and get back on throttle as fast as I can.
    What I have learned watching professional racing and especially in moto america is that the person who might pass you going fast into a turn will almost always get passed by you exiting the turn. I think the reason is because they might be going slower into the turn but the lower speed allows you to point bike towards exit and get back in full throttle faster. However if you trail brake you can enter that corner faster and then also get back in throttle leaving the corner fast aswell.
    It's important to learn brake both front and rear while leaning. Not only to make you faster but it could save your life. There have been times Iv come into a new corner and halfway in realize it tightens up and I'm going to fast for turn. You might be able to add lean angle but you most likely will wash out and what if you are out of lean angle already. Simply applying the brake will tighten the radius and save you from crashing in the corner.

    We love your vids and learned a lot from them, but weve got to say that talking about safe riding for hundreds of minutes on your channel, then riding here one handed is frankly a bit of a put off and seems like showing off, and against your own advice. Just saying.
