After seeing all this I now believe that Messi can succeed in any era of football no matter against who and no matter where. Van Dijk had a really good season but Messi deserved that ballon d'or. I think he also deserved the 2021 ballon d'or (Lewandoski deserved it in 2020, not 2021 where it was really close between the two). The only ballon d'ors that I wouldn't have given to Messi are 2010 and 2023.
