i really appreciate you mentioning brush on primer. its a great option for people with limited access to places to spray prime and i feel like people never talk about it
Not gonna lie, I was very skeptical at first when you said you wouldn't use an airbrush or even a spray can, but at the end, I'm convinced that this style of painting yields an incredible end result, especially considering the relatively small time investment. Well done, I love it and learned several cool new tricks!
That's the same badger primer I use. It works well with a brush. 2 coats if you want a solid layer. It doesn't clog detail all that much (even on historical models with shallow panel lines). It is also nice if you rattle can black primer. Do a quick layer with this and it covers up the spots the spray inevitably missed.
I recently experimented with a similar blotchy/sketchy colour painting technique on TTCombat's Carnevale Plague Doctoress model. When you look at the mini close up it seems messy but from a distance it gives an impressionistic style, the main advantage I found with this is that you do not need to overly focus on where the highlights and shadows fall, although this obviously works better when using a dark colour pallet (in my case it was a grey overcoat and trousers with a white shirt and leather straps). I have been a little unsure about the validity of the technique but seeing someone else painting in this style gives me the confidence to experiment further. Thank you.
My pleasure! I figured, if I was lucky enough to get one of these boxes it was my responsibility to do a cool video about it! It really is a nice set and I recommend it!
I've got a few (like.. 5) Pro Acryl paints and I love them, the consistency and opacity works for how I paint (average at best). Glad you enjoyed them, I need to think about picking up their starter set, great vid as always and I really like that grim darkish style.
Tom Sachs!! Why am i so happy you know his work? I just ordered some of his zines and a pack of boombox playing cards 2 days ago. If i was a fancy rich boy i’d get a quarter with screw bit soldered on because, it’s ART, dad.
This is such a good video. Great colour scheme, great idea of grim dark on super hero’s, great painting techniques, the models look great and this has really got me in the mood to paint. Great video. I really like it.
they aren't as bad as you might think, the nice thing is the larger scale needs less highlights/shadows to look natural, a really basic paint job can look good on these figs!
I love the expression that is your painting style. It's very unique and stylized. I find myself watching your space sharks video a lot but I think this one will become my new favorite, specifically the Traffic light segment. Thank you for all you do.
Great video and educational as always. Since you brought up your website I wanted to say I have used it several times (it is favourited) and it has been indispensable on my projects. Thanks very much.
Honestly Dana I've watched this video twice in a few hours. This genuinely entertained me. My hobby time recently has been very and I mean very reduced. So doing my miniature painting in this style may save me alot of time and effort. I can see the grim dark style really working and leaning towards certain aspects of games. Thank you.
Good results in a minimum amount of time, with a unique aesthetic. I have just recently stated trying to paint "dirty." It's a strange concept when you are used to wanting everything to look pristine.
Oof, my hat off to you, I did 24 hours over a 3 day weekend and I didn't realize how much of a SLOG it is to sit and paint for more than 8 hours straight, let alone 24!
This turned out great. I think Iron Man is my favorite. I was really surprised by how much I liked what the jade glaze added. I really want to get that ultron mini now.
This is so cool! If i were ever bold enough to attempt this effect, id be interested whether chipping medium could be used on the leather and logos to further that incredible effect?
I've been getting used to the pro acryl paints too and I love them but man I am being forced to really learn more about paint consistency and things like you highlighted here - getting a lot of the moisture from the brush off on a paper towel.
I have been using either Mig One Shot or AK black primers by brush for a year, and no problems so far... For me it's faster to take 10/15 minutes to prime than to get out the whole airbrush stuff (especially when the weather is too hot outside to airbrush...)
The dark brown wash is maybe a bit much on some colours, like the green and explosions, but the rust and the highlights came out really nice! I'd also recommend ProAcryl's Transparent paints if you get the chance - they're like a glaze straight out of the bottle, even with a brush. I don't know how, but ProAcryl just seem to have the midas touch when it comes to quality paint!
Pretty cool results. To me they read more "movie Marvel" rather than 40K grimdark, but good job in any case. I prefer clean comics-style look for superheroes, but these techniques look very useful for everything else!
I'm generally a warhammer person, but I'm looking at something a bit different to paint & play. The only problem I've got is Marvel Crisis or Star Wars shatterpoint big fan of both IPs. I really enjoyed watching you paint both games minatures but any tips on my decision would help 😂❤.
at my local store venom is $30 CAD (about 25 USD), but you can also get him in the "Web Warriors" faction box with 3 other minis for $60 CAD (about 45 USD)
i really appreciate you mentioning brush on primer. its a great option for people with limited access to places to spray prime and i feel like people never talk about it
Neat spin on the superhero thing, like the minis. Also, not for nothing, that was a top tier ad segue.
Pale Sand is feeling sad that you said that pro acryl mahogany is now your favourite colour.
First it was the Army Painter custom mix they gave Dana and now Pro Acryl Mahogany, next Dana will be flirting with AK Ice Yellow! Poor Pale Sand…
Apologies if I seem kinda groggy in this video I had to film it while I was sick >_
That sounds a lot like what a person trying to mask her elongation of the word "Squarespace" would say. Gotcha.
I enjoy your painting and comments. Additionally, I love to hear you say "Square Space".
thats how its pronounced!!!

dang. crossbones muscles do look awesome! awesome Job Dana!

good tip thank you!
Getting psyched up to paint Marvel Zombies next month, I think this style will work well for that game as well. Thanks Dana.
oh damn I didn't know there was a marvel zombies game, this treatment would be perfect for that!
Good work Dana 🍻👊🥰
I was surprised! I prefer classic four color comic characters, but this was a fantastic treatment in the grim dark style! Well done!

i like howl you say square space at the start
I am jealous you got a new core box already! This was great, thank you!
My pleasure! I figured, if I was lucky enough to get one of these boxes it was my responsibility to do a cool video about it! It really is a nice set and I recommend it!
@@DanaHowl I have mine ordered just eagerly waiting 😂

Thanks for the video Dana, the painted starter set as a whole looks great on the tabletop!
Not normally my style, but the final look is great! Cool project
This is a perfect thing to watch on a Sunday afternoon. Thanks!
A much more sensible 24hr challenge! Well done.

👍👍 now that is a good looking set! I can't even remember the last time I finished a mini inside of a week, let alone a whole boardgame 👍😅!
Those looked gorgeous at the end.
I love these challenge videos! Also, i'm happy your branching out and painting up models outside warhammer!
This is such a good video. Great colour scheme, great idea of grim dark on super hero’s, great painting techniques, the models look great and this has really got me in the mood to paint. Great video. I really like it.
Super impressive! What a sprint through that box!
Thanks Elf! Yeah it was a fun challenge and felt good to completely finish it so I can move on to other projects (like Curse of Strahd terrain!!)
*Gasp* Are we talking about that?~@@DanaHowl
I'm so intimidated by the Crisis Protocol sculpts, it's nice to see you take them on.

Thank you so much! I hope to update it with more colours tested soon!!
Zack Snyder's Avengers look amazing!
OOOF lmao
resist the urge to add edge highlights, grimdark generally goes off of having low saturation and doesn't tend to work well as more of a cleaner style.

That mahogany Grimdark... it hits hard. Beautiful.
Its such a great colour!!!
Yeah. 1000% stealing that.

How did the modge podge work on the moving parts like the measuring sticks
pretty good, no chipping so far!
Yey a new video! Always a good day when you post.
Thanks!! I meant to post more videos this month but I got sick :/
@DanaHowl no worries, sometimes you need to slow down for a bit.
Just chilling & loving the vibe of this video. The grimdark style worked really nicely with these minis. Grand 👏
Awesome. Love these more in depth videos. Always fascinating seeing your workflow, thought process and watching things come together
So great to see some non-spray priming experiments!
as a pro acryl convert I popped at the base set box
Love all the extra details you added to the terrain! Definitely worth it!
Amazing stuff Dana - inspirational as always
That you managed all this in that time frame is incredible. It's not to my personal style, but the terrain and "bad guys" look amazing.
So many amazing tips in this video! Argh now I’m gonna have to buy that new starter set and let it sit there forever
Or challenge yourself to get it done in 24 hours!!!!
This turned out great. I think Iron Man is my favorite. I was really surprised by how much I liked what the jade glaze added.
I really want to get that ultron mini now.
I feel #PoorHammer's influence here (the red recommendations) ;) (But yeah, that'll happen when they mention Pale Sand online summoning Dana
This is so cool! If i were ever bold enough to attempt this effect, id be interested whether chipping medium could be used on the leather and logos to further that incredible effect?
ive never tried chipping medium but that makes sense to me!

Awesome video, thanks again for such an inspiring video, looking forward the the next one! Cheers from Ontario Canada.
Always great to see MCP content here.
Which black primer did you use to brush on?
Badger Stynl-Rez matte black airbrush primer!!!
They look great.
Awesome style! Much prefer gritty over pristine but then I am more into DC ...
I enjoyed this so much! Thank you

Amazing work!!
I've been using Vallejo airbrush primer as a brush on one. i have had some problems with it rubbing off though, might depend on the paint though
Pretty cool results. To me they read more "movie Marvel" rather than 40K grimdark, but good job in any case. I prefer clean comics-style look for superheroes, but these techniques look very useful for everything else!
Great stuff friend 👏 👍
I wonder what Star Wars miniatures could look like in a Grimdark style?
It's funny that the skid steer is bigger than a car, usually it's not that big
Thank you for this!
I use pro acryl (with contrast/speed paint) on all of my models. But don't have any mahogany. Guess I will add that to my next order. 👍
Dana, the lack of protection on your work surface is stressing me out 😅Otherwise, great video!
Love Monument hobbies

Nice vid!
It's a shame that Vallejo did not send you yet a 200ml bottle of Pale Sand
Love me some MCP!
Wait, there are two Captain Marvels in the core set?
New Cpt Marvel's Binary Form is a full physical change instead of just a token you put on the card.
F for the poor table 😢
Just use cheap glos varnish and paint for diy primer 🧐
Good Lord Dana……
damn the algorithm
80$ for the venom mini!?!
at my local store venom is $30 CAD (about 25 USD), but you can also get him in the "Web Warriors" faction box with 3 other minis for $60 CAD (about 45 USD)
I needed to say, you’re beautiful! You give me so much gender envy
: )
It can't be done.
Do not like. 🤷♂
