Jim McCarty is the most underrated Gibson/Marshall stack hard rockin' guitarist of his era...he worked it better than anybody.
The feedback, the riffs, the pickin'...killer. Let's hear it for Detroit and Cactus.

I´ve heard they were a great live-band - now I know it´s true. I have two Cactus-vinyls, "Cactus" and "One Way...Or Another". Bought them in early 70´s, grew three children who have given me eight grand children...and still Cactus sounds as good as 40 years ago!

Don't get me wrong, those are great tunes but there are so many others, and groups like Cactus who they will never play. Sad.

McCarty had it from the beginning; he was amazing with the Detroit Wheels when playing live. Heard them in August 1966 and he burned out two Fender Twin amps in the first four songs-had to play the rest of the night through a warm up band's Vox Super Beatle amp, He was smokin', unlike anything he ever recorded for the Wheels. The reformed recent Cactus thing? Not a great representation-ongoing income. Mystery Train band at places like Blue Goose Inn in Detroit 7-8 years ago...the real McCarty!

@amstell13 Actually, what Bogert & Appice wanted was to be playing with Jeff Beck---which was their original plan leaving Vanilla Fudge. ("Cactus" was actually the name the pair came up with for the band they'd hoped to form with Beck and Rod Stewart . . . before Beck's infamous auto accident put him out of action and the pair ended up forming a rather different Cactus.) Which they did in due course, to somewhat less than stellar results . . .

@amstell13 - Regarding your comparison of members of Zeppelin to Cactus - Bonham vs Appice = very close / Jones vs Bogert = coin toss / Page vs McCarty = McCarty hands down / Plant vs Day = difficult to compare as the styles are so different (if you want to enter boring or monotonus into the comparison Plant would win / more album sales may be because Zeppelin's career was longer (duh) - better songs = your personal opinion which doesn't equate to your statement 'these are the facts'

Yikes!! I'd hate to be the band that had to step on stage after these guys got through crushing it. They obviously didn't come to fuck around.

+MarshallAmp Man ..I remember in my "haze" another guitar player,....and you surely can hear him on the tape but I have no idea who it was...Cactus was huge in Memphis...I saw them twice and this is the Shell concert I believe..The Overton Park Shell was an outside stage, awesome place and is still there...Elvis first paid gig was there...Saw many a concert back in the day there for a whopping $3.00 or an outrageous price of $5.00.....Best times of my life were at that Park.....
