- No they didn’t! Yes they did. Unfortunately from time to time cinema has been responsible for some inappropriate cringe. Using famous stars of the time seemed to be enough reason to play a character not of their own culture or ethnicity. Some not so bad, others really cringe worthy, especially now. I doubt some of these actors would make the same decisions today. Let’s have some fun today and enjoy some, let's say humorous scenes from notable actors.

Kathrine Hepburn looks more like a Vulcan from Star Trek than Chinese.
I loved John Wayne, but that's just sad
Even sadder than Wayne's casting in The Conqueror are the deaths that resulted from filming near nuclear test sites, and shipping 60 tons of radioactive dirt back to Hollywood for studio reshoots.
Now Hollywood is redeeming itself by using non-whites in white roles. Using white actors in non-white roles was just part of the Hollywood scene from its beginning until just a few years ago. In the early years it was pure racism. In later years it was because of who controlled Hollywood and the audiences they were making movies for. They wanted big named stars in the movies and turned a blind eye to racism. In was however was pure racism. There is no excuse for these miscastings in the last 50 years. Hard to believe that Johnny Depp was cast as Tonto 11 years ago. Perhaps it was best as it is a crap move and a really derogatory role.
Brando in Guys and Dolls too. Musicals wasnt his thing or shouldn’t have been. Lancaster, Reynolds, Bronson played Indians. Doesn’t work. Mel Brooks did a great job though!😂 Heston such a powerful actor and Touch of Evil so good we can overlook the miscast. Rooney is hysterical!
Not sure how Brando in Guys and Dolls fits in with the theme of actors miscast in nonwhite roles. Besides, he did a creditable job -- as creditable as Rex Harrison in My Fair Lady at least :)
@@bravehome4276 I’m using a broader definition of miscast, not just looking at race. Brando was miscast in that because he couldn’t sing in a musical, similar to Clint Eastwood in Paint Your Wagon as opposed to Harve Presnell in the same movie. The truth of that is that Brando and Eastwood took the money, did the musical, and promised their fans never to do it again. Miscast means not right for the role, regardless of race.
@@mikemccormick8115 Certainly Brando is no Howard Keel, but he sang on pitch and was an effective actor for his part. At least he didn't 'sing-say' his way through the role like Rex did in My Fair Lady....
