They are two legends of Karate: Hasegawa Katsuhide won 6 WKF World titles in team kata, together with his brothers Yukimitsu and Shinici. Mabuni Kenyu is the grandson of the founder of the Shitoryu style, Mabuni Kenwa.
This video was recorded during a Karate seminar organized by Sensei Con Kassis on the 14th of February 2015 in Melbourne (Victoria, Australia).

Watching this I need to say (after having practised shotokan years ago): What did Funakoshi do to this obviously ancient kata when he "created" Bassai Dai? This confirms me in my thinking that he was not interested in passing on the real karate - that he once learned from true grand masters - to a worldwide mass of sportsmen. I think that this kata was the one he truly learned. But maybe like a piano teacher who simplifies Beethoven´s "Ode to joy" for keyborad beginners taking out all middle voices and complex harmonies.

I cannot stop wondering why in Shito Ryu, despite being created by a famous okinawan master, the kata of Shito Ryu look so different from their okinawan iterations? This highly puzzles me. I mean, the techniques are mostly the same, but they are done so differently here.... I wonder why this is so?

Shito Ryu is a style where most techniques are at its simplest form but universal when bunkai is shown as well as the rythm of the kata itself (depends on the performer).
All styles where derived from Major Old School Okinawan Karate styles including Ryuei-Ryu.
Frankly speaking, Shito-Ryu for me is closest and the most correlated style when it comes to techniques that are simplified from Okinawa especially Ryuei-Ryu.
Some Shito Katas like Ohan Dai, Anan and many others originates from Ryuei-Ryu, just little differences in terms of angles and stances.
Shotokan however is acquired from Shito Ryu like Unshu : Unsu , Chinto : Gankaku , Kosokun Dai : Kanku Dai , Gojushiho : Gojushiho Sho etc.
Throughout the decades it just evolves so much, and this is something fascinating about Shito-Ryu.
