I played Battle Royale against 9 highly skilled Geoguessr players. It didn't go well (Part 1)

- Two weeks ago I was invited by members of the Geoguessr community to take part in a game of Battle Royale against some of the best players out there. It was the first time I had played against other skilled players, even in a one on one, so I was pretty tense (and that certainly showed at times) but nothing could have prepared me for the sheer speed of some of these games and the pressure that came with that.

I can relate to Tom being so impressed with everyone's guesses, because that's how I feel when I watch any video of his
Tom: how do they get that?!?
Me: exactly, EXACTLY
Same!
@@rocketsoccer1 lmfao
Yes. My exact thought too!
It's because their members in Discord with his friend (mostly) are very smart according to their guess. Their actually knew those countries because there is a sign that helps them to guess the country; Tom (GeoWizard) in somewhat knew those countries and he always gets knocked out due to their guesses and they're always pro so that's why he upload his video. Sorry if I'm mistaken in this reply.
Im so impressed by how quickly everyone guesses the more obscure countries.
Some countries like Bhutan, Lesotho, and Andorra are small enough that they always look similar round to round, and really are miserable countries (no signage) if you don't know them. Trial by fire.
That last Bhutan round, I was like, "Oh, that's got to be Bhutan. Tom, no, not Japan-"
Not even sure why I knew that, I think it was something to do with the mountains and the foliage.
@@salientspoon It always looks kinda foggy on those mountain roads in Bhutan. It's one of those that you know it once you've seen it enough times.
if u have play geoguessr for a decent time , those countries become soo easy to guess. once you learn car meta and bollards , u will will all ur games ez
There’s only a certain amount of countries in battle Royale mode. You can narrow things down pretty quickly. Hardest for me is southern/central europe
It was an honor to play against you and everyone else! I hope to do more collabs in the future! Maybe with talking during the games. :)
I was literally looking for your comment haha
Can’t wait to see more colabs! Looking forward to them
ive seen you in Battle Royale... I remember you winning almost all of the games :)
Hi Peter, you’re amazing at the game.

*Sees trees and mountains*
Everyone: Ah yes ofcourse Bhutan
I always get Colombia and Bhutan mixed up
@@icewink7100 I usually know Bhutan, but I mix up the whole of Latin America, because I rely on language for a big part xD
The buildings with their roofs are also unique if you can see them, also their crazy decorated trucks
It just looked Bhutan and the white car confirms it.
Bhutan is arguably the easiest country to get (besides Kenya and maybe Iceland) because it stands out from all the other countries, due to its unique identical buildings and mountainous foggy scenery.
They say when college athletes move into the pros, the biggest difference is the speed of the game. This is how I feel right now. Insane level of play going on this video. Looking forward to the next version of these!

Tom "that's obviously K̶u̶r̶g̶i̶s̶t̶a̶n̶ Kyrgyzstan" (my bad on the initial spelling)
My one guess why it wasn't America is because there was no fence containing the cattle, but also I've never ridden through the west so I don't know if that holds true over there.
Kirgystan is quite easy to find out by looking at the car

*Are you sure about that*
Yeah that confused me, I guess if everyone locks in the correct guess, nobody is out? It shouldn't say "only x can make it" though... alternatively the slowest person to guess should always be out.
@@PiousMoltar yes that's what it is. The lock guess feature means that no matter how many people locked it if they are all correct they all go through
@@PiousMoltar This would make the obvious rounds a clicking speed game.
The point of the lock in mechanism is so that your success is pretty much always determined by thinking speed and not much else.
@@iurigrang This. Otherwise it'll be down to other factors than your knowledge. Like your PC specs, internet speed and your clicking prowess. It's not an FPS, so the grace period with a possibility to lock in a guess is good.

The ultimate power move
I will say that all of the meta data clues take a lot of the fun out of the game - which is why I enjoy watching you because you are very relaxed and play the game the right way. Keep up the good work Tom!
Tom, just so you know, countries that are potentially disputed generally aren’t in Battle Royale, even if they are in the normal game (Lots of Middle East except Israel and Jordan, Pakistan, China, etc). There is a map where you can see what countries are available for future competitions :)
Hence why he couldn't click on Taiwan.
But I think Tom doing poorly is just because he's more of a personality rather than an excellent GG player - he's ok/good. I think he's the type of guy who has a 'pick-it up as you go-along' attitude - he doesn't study or swat up on rounds he's just experienced hence why he fails a fair bit on his stream and here (repeating his same mistakes). Oh well. Good content though.
@@dizzydazed8055 I think you're underestimating his skill. He's a very good GG player, the people he were playing against were just better. But I agree, he is a person who only plays off of his geography knowledge, and the reason he's the most popular out of all of them is because of his personality.

The fact that Tom can even keep up with these guys who know all the metas while he determines the country of instinct is unreal

I really like the new voiceover! I prefer it when you tell us how you knew the countries you guessed, but you obviously have to concentrate at that time, I’d like it if you could that for more videos.
I wouldn't worry tom, I watched the same vid from GeoPetes perspective and for a lot of them it's just remembering algorithms and meta tactics I.e. bollards, sign shapes and especially the individial google car glitches. When they were placed in a field on NMPZ they s*it themselves. You might not memorise all the tell tale signs, but your actual world knowledge is amazing and your ability to pin point locations based on the actual surroundings is up there, if not the best. Its a very different style of playing, and in reality there's is less fun and less skillful its just memorising little glitches and knowing where you are without even having to look around. So don't knock yourself, you are no doubt one of the best in terms of world knowledge and actual skill!
You also have to understand that they recognise the surroundings. It would be boring if they told you the landscape strongly looked like the country every round, so they offer tips you can use to confirm the location
but nowhere near hobbit's knowledge
hobbit is god. hobbit is lord. hobbit is master. hobbit is king

Having watched a number of Battle Royale videos I'd like to express my support for the 3-in-a-row Battle Royale vs randoms. There is some chance that you will lose, so it's exciting, but you are mostly relaxed. You often have a chance to explain your decision and sometimes have time to move around to find extra evidence for your guess and that's super-valuable for us who want to learn more. NMPZ means "it a bush, now choose" and is not so much fun for the rest of us. Playing vs good players (like here) is good, but too fast to be the best format. 3-in-a-row vs randoms is the most content-rich, educational and entertaining. I'm glad that I've discovered you and plan to watch all your videos.

I'm guessing they use meta-knowledge, like appearance of the car and such. That's not really impressive to me.
@@kristoffer8609 No need to downplay having a lot of experience. Getting sub 15s on a rubik's cube is pretty much having more meta-knowledge and being able to recognise it quicker and that's more impressive than someone intuitively working out a rubik's cube over 4 hours.

@@kristoffer8609 With Battle Royale it is a lot of meta, yes, but I don't think it's right to downplay some of these players' skills. I've played lots of Chatguessr and Challenges with these players (sometimes with the Google car hidden, meaning car meta can't be used), and their skill expands far beyond meta. Their ability to distinguish countries and find accurate guesses is quite startling. You have to know roads systems, number plates, bollards, signs, utility poles, road markings, vegetation, topography, etc. exceptionally well. For example, in the Bhutan guess they used no meta, but were able to identify it immediately from the roads/vegetation/mountains
But yeah, I do get what you're saying and I think in Battle Royale particularly there is a heavy reliance on meta (not to say that the meta is as simple as seeing the car and knowing the country for the most part)
