The "g" has two sounds. A hard sound as in "get", when it's placed before the vowels "a", "o", and "u". However, when the "g" is followed by "ue" and "ui", the "g" sound is still hard, but the "u" is not pronounced, as in the word "guitarra" (guitar), and "guerra" (war). The other "g" sound is soft. It sounds close to the "h" sound as in "house". This soft sound occurs when the "g" is followed by the vowels "e" and "i", as in the words "gente" (people), and "gigante" (giant).
BUSUU IS WAY BETTER DONT USE DUOLINGO PLEASE!!!!!!!!!! Vro, I did a test to see which one helped me better (I’m not fluent I’ve only done it for like 2 weeks) but Busuu helped me way more than Duolingo
If you are genuinely interested in Spanish, you can memorize this at a fast pace. Now if this is for a test you are forced to take, it may take slower.
When I entered high school in 1983, I originally wanted to learn French, but my mom reminded me that I had cousins from Argentina,so Spanish changed my mind quick.Glad I stayed with it.Sesame Street taught me some Spanish,so high school was a continuation of this.
That's correct! It has a soft sound like an "s" in front of "i" and "e", but strong like a "k" in front of a, o, u. In Spain, the soft "c" sound is pronounced like a "th" in the word "think".
This is amazing!! Thank you so much!! I just viewed this with my four-year-old and my husband. We love it. I'm so happy to know that I can teach our son whatever we can grasp at home before he goes to school and learns it officially. I really want to teach him Spanish.
I'm a new student taking Spanish, and I came in late.. I studied my Spanish greetings flash cards, and I suddenly hear I have a quiz on the alphabet.. we had a pretest... I got 15 of 20 wrong.. and I guessed letters about three times each on different questions just to get them right, but I wasn't graded luckily. Then before I gave up searching for the Spanish alphabet, I found this video that clearly explained to me the alphabet, in extreme detail. Thanks for saving my Spanish grade!
Omg! This video is what I have been looking for! Thank you for starting with the names of the letters first and their sounds afterwards. Cuz some videos I watched are kinda confusing.
Nice. Could you also add words that illustrate the hard and soft sounds of the letter c and g? casa (hard), cero, ciudad (soft sound) gato (hard sound), general, girasol
This was my first alphabet lesson,i downloaded an android app, dolingo,it is great app but i wanted to learn more,i speak Arabic and English and i want to learn a new language, thank you so much,i'm one of your students now
As of 2010, the Real Academia de la Lengua Española eliminated the "ch" and the "ll"...I included them here to help you pronounce the sounds (just like with the double "r")...good luck!
Technically CH, LL, RR are digraphs and not independent and different letters by themselves. Therefore, they were removed. About Ñ wich back in the middle age was NN, now it's considered a letter. Thats the reason why starting a sentence with capital LL is written: Ll, since it is two letters, and you only capitalize the first one. Most of the original spanish speakers are not used to, or don't know about this changes, but you can get them right from the start since you are learning now.
Careful, as well as at the beginning of the word, the Spanish R is also rolled when written as RR, between vowels. You will never see a Spanish word beginning by RR, but you will see RR between vowels when Spanish people want to make a rolling R instead of a soft R. PERRO (rolled) PERO (soft)
Why we dont pronunce the u in QUE (for example queso) is because thats an exception of this: ca-que-qui-co-cu all these sounds are soft "k"(QUEso, QUItar) BUT ce and ci sound with soft "s" (for example CIrcle or CEntury) usually
Everyone here is watching this for Spanish class while me who (unfortunately) doesn’t learn Spanish at school is watching it for my own enjoyment and knowledge 🤙🏻
i am just getting started studying, and i find this vido to be very helpful. love for my brother who live's in spain for sending me this link!!! Chief,!""" i am on it!!! thank ...you!!!~
Me gusta el video pero en la letra X, debiste dar otro ejemplo ya que se utiliza mayormente la X con el sonido CS y luego dar la exepción de que en algunas palabras suena como la J. Eso podría confundir a algunos.
Hi there! You should find a video where they explain you the soft and hard vowels. When the "c" is before the "a","o" or "u" the sound is like the letter "k" these are known as the hard/strong vowel (sound wise) so when you have a word such as cereal, cerca, cesta, circo, círculo the sound of the "c" will make the "s" as in side, sort, salmon. Hope it helps. Sometimes is hard to give a reason to why is like this , but that's how it is lol. Good luck with learning spanish :)
hey prof. you said that the 'r' is rolled at the beginning of the word but not anywhere else. I read other places where the r should always be rolled especially at the end of the sentence and and also even hear Spanish people roll the r everywhere.
+derrickbanes i bet that's the dou r (rr), overtime u see rr in a word you gotta roll it. Also just like the video mentioned, at the beginning of the word definitely needa trill your r sound like him.
the V is biting your lower lip, whilst in the B your lips barely touch each other. That's the right way to pronounce them, but we don't pay much attention to it. Even us, native spanish speakers, pronounce them the same way sometimes.
Luana Debbie That is incorrect Luana. In spanish "B" and "V" are both pronounced as "B". No biting lips or teeth envolved, just lips. It has nothing to do with attention. Pronouncing the "v" rising your lower lip to touch the top teeth is an error called "ultracorrección" people trying to hard to sound educated make this mistake. Phonetically "vaso" is pronounced [ 'ba so ] and "base" is pronounced [ 'ba se ]. I am a native Spanish teacher certified by UNAM.
You have to remember "ch" is a letter all on its own. It should be pronounced as che. Altogether, it would sound like the ch from church plus how "e" sounds like a soft English "a". Ce hache is incorrect. Ch and ll are included in the Spanish alphabet, but they are considered more as sounds rather than letters. Some places include "rr" in the alphabet, the double r but again, it's really a sound.
Hola, te felicito por el buen trabajo que estas haciendo, quiero hacer una pequeña observación en la "X" creo que México no es el mejor ejemplo ya que es una rara excepción de pronunciación, la palabra "Extra" o "Exacto" serían mejor un mejor ejemplo y en cuanto a la "Z" no siempre es "S" en España adquiere un sonido similar al de la consonante "TH" en Inglés. Saludos!

Good video. One other thing that is not mentioned in this video is that the letter g sounds like an 'h' but only if it comes before an 'e' or an 'i'

This video was very educational, I did not know that the H was silent in Spanish. Nor that R’s only roll at the beginning of a word.

Awesome! I am glad it helped.
"B" has a similar sound as the "B" in "boat". "P" has a similar sound as the "P" in "pet", but it's less plosive.
Excellent video, Spanish pronunciation is clear and clean! Thank you for sharing :)
Thanks
there are repeated sounds like c,k,q, b,v, s,z...the pronounce the same then why they have it ??
Hi there! You should find a video where they explain you the soft and hard vowels. Some people pronounce Z and C similarly and like θ. So which ones are true?
tell me why the letter y makes a complicated sound but in a word it sound completely different just saying
Thaaaank you thank you on the tips. Very helpful
QUESTION: why is the 'U' in 'queso' not pronounced?
We don't use "ch" and "ll" in the alphabet anymore :c

I can read better than I can speak. I'm worried I am always going to pronounce something wrong. This has been very helpful.

where is the RR? I was told that was in the Spanish alphabet
Usually it's not in the alphabet but it's part of the sounds(? well, at least we don't put it in the alph (in my country)
no
+John Schreiner I think that is forgotten. its r - ere & rr - erre
+John Schreiner is NOT a letter
Actually CH and LL are still there, it was RR that was removed but original Spanish speakers and foreigners still use RR
Thanks! It's a great one! is it Spain Spanish or Latin Spanish btw?? ta :)
V and B same sound?
the V is biting your lower lip, whilst in the B your lips barely touch each other. That's the right way to pronounce them, but we don't pay much attention to it. Even us, native spanish speakers, pronounce them the same way sometimes.

I'm having a hard time pronouncing Y. I'm trying to phonetically write it out to make an audio assignment but im stuck on Y for some reason.
