Hi, Spirit of the Law. I'm the designer of the Almeida and Bayinnaung campaigns. Thank you for making this video. It's great to give the fans some more historical details and I appreciate that you noticed all the little historical nods I put in the scenarios. There's a couple interesting historical figures you didn't mention, though. Timoji appears in the fourth scenario as a recruitable player. This Indian privateer allied with the Portuguese and actually warned Almeida about the Zamorin's impending siege of Cannanore. He also helped supply the Portuguese St Angelo Fort during the siege. Malik Ayyaz is one of the leaders in the final scenario. He was also an interesting figure, as he was either a Croatian or Russian mamluk who wound up in India and served the Sultan of Gujarat. Also, the Venetians and the Republic of Ragusa assisted the Mameluks and Ottomans in the Battle of Diu, surprising as they were Christians in alliance with Muslims and Hindus. It's a bit of a stretch to say they had ground troops in the battle like I depicted in the scenario, but they did provide naval advisors so I wanted to make sure they were reflected. That's why the Mamelukes have the feitorias. Just to give you and the fans a little more insight into the development of the campaign: Francisco de Almeida wasn't the original protagonist. I actually outlined the campaign and began designing the scenarios for Afonso de Albuquerque. The second scenario of the Almeida campaign was originally the first scenario of the Albuquerque campaign (Albuquerque was the commander of the Fort Graciosa fort at the time, as you pointed out, but Almeida was present in the region as well). The reason for the change was that Albuquerque's career path was more geographically scattered and confusing than Almeida's. Albuquerque's progression would have been: 1) North Africa, 2) Horn of Africa and Ormuz, 3) Goa, 4) Malacca, 5) failed campaign in the Red Sea against the Egyptians. I decided against this as it meant that Albuquerque would be in a prison cell during the great and fascinating Battle of Diu and it was geographically confusing with the backtrack from Malacca to the Red Sea. With Almeida, I could use his career as a proxy for a linear representation of Portuguese exploration and conquest: beginning in European conflicts, going to North Africa, then East Africa, then finally India. Surprisingly, I did not have to change my basic plan for the campaign too much as the two men had eerily similiar lives and ends. In fact, Albuquerque was also 'fired' by King Manuel when his replacement showed up and died of an illness at sea while sailing home. By the way, I had no idea I used 'Jackals' so much!
I don't play AoE that much, but I do think that the Almeida/Portugal campaign is the best, mostly to all of the triggers and complex ways maps can be completed (it is also the only AoE campaign that I played through to the end).
Man the El Cid campaign was so sad.... The last mission...."the soldiers must not know that their Cid is dead." Well guess what, I KNOW that he's dead. That was kinda demoralizing.
Can we take a moment to appreciate how kickass the Portuguese campaign is? Constantly outnumbered, often surrounded, usually backed into a corner. You've usually got a strong, defensible starting location and a tech advantage. Add all that up and the clear solution is to sit back and build up a big army before getting things done right? WRONG. The story's constantly encouraging you to not wuss out and hide in your hole and to instead get out there, wade through those mooks, and kick ludicrous amounts of ass, and the maps reward you greatly for it. It's a seriously great experience, and probably the best campaign pre-Raja HD has to offer. Bravo!
That was my final conclusion once I tried maybe 8 or 9 different strategies to start the map. Something outside of my comfort zone, just constant action and micromanagement.
Just to assist you with the pronounciation of "Lourenço". In Portuguese the C or Ç is always an S sound when it precedes a voul. The Ç in "Loureço" sounds the same as the Ç in "Chouriço" (chorizo in Spanish). Hope it helps!
Great video! Your pronunciation of the Portuguese names was very good, even João, which a lot of english speakers don't even try to pronounce it correctly. The only correction I would make is Lourenço. The Ç is always pronounced as S, so it sound more like Lourenso than Lourenko.
Very well done Spirit =P my congrats on the fine investigation and presentation on this part of the Portuguese History. You really did a great job =) I'm Portuguese and the only thing I can say is thank you and hope you found this bit of Foreign Country History, at least, fun and interesting =) Keep up the good work and should you ever need help with portuguese names (personal or city-related) or portuguese words in general, you can count on me =) I appreciate your dedication and the quality of your content. Thank you, Spirit! And keep up the the good work =P
please do more of these aoe2 campaign vs history videos!! they're really good and mirroring everytime i play an aoe2 campaign i history burn through the events and characters
Wow, I know that painting at 3:04 anywhere. John of Austria was the son of Isabella? AKA the guy who saved Europe from the Ottomans in the Battle of Lepanto (The same Battles of the Conquerors campaign)? Bloody hell, it's amazing how all this history is connected.
Sadly, it looks like he used the wrong portrait. He used the image of John of Austria (who captained at Lepanto) (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_of_Austria). While the John he was talking about was John of Asturias (who died aged nineteen) (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John,_Prince_of_Asturias) As awesome as that family connection would be, alas! 'Twas not meant to be.
Oh boy, I love history in my games and having a comparison.. what a time to be alive! No more long wiki articles to grind through. Well done and thank you very much for your effort!
Being a Goan, this is my favorite campaign and civilization in the game as well. I did hope to find Goa included in the campaign but in vain. At least you mentioned it at 6:56 😇
Goa is included, but indirectly. The 'Estado da India' scenario involves the pirate Timoji on the island of Anjediva in Goa. Timoji was a Goan chardo whose family had fled Goa for Honnavar after the Bijapur invasion. He became a pirate attacking only Muslim ships, and ended up providing military support to Afonso de Albuquerque during the conquest of Goa in 1510. You can read the full story about this time period in Goa in this book, because it's not taught in Goan schools: www.amazon.in/dp/B01228DX1A/
Great video, I really enjoy the Campaign vs History series you do! A small note is when you showed a picture of Henry 4th of Castille you used a picture of Henry 4th of England instead
Magawengway Odakenday, I noticed the same thing. Small detail but worth noting so that people don't think Isabella and Henry V of England are somehow siblings....
Hey spirit. This might sound a bit stupid or weird, but I'm going through some of the hardest times in my life and your videos are weirdly the only things that can keep my mind off of things for a little while. I know it's probably not what you intended, but your videos are meditation videos for me. If I get through all of this, I could seriously fly all the way to Canada just to buy you a beer. Thanks for all your hard work making these videos.
This one was my last completed campaign from the African Kingdoms and somehow I thought it might not be that interesting, but I was wrong. I found it really interesting, diversivied, with good options, nice maps and good challenges - good job forgotten empires.
Hello ; I really like your videos! it is *almost* as good as playing AoE :p I have a request though ; would it be possible to make a video on trebuchet and the onager line? Would be great! Thanks allot and keep going :)
I love these videos. I actually live in Table bay, South Africa, where Dom Francisco was killed (Mentioned @12:31). Table bay now being a suburb of Cape Town, named so because of its awesome view of Table mountain. :)
To: Spirit of the law: I have been your dedicated follower on your mathcraft about AOE2 and the detail run through on many area I did not know about. Currently I am playing Shogun 2 total war and I am very curious if you can do the same math craft on the stats of that game. Keep up the good work and I really enjoy it.
jitsuzuko Brother, if i'm not mistaken, actually it's only for the spanish language. The portuguese language. However, pronounce it differently. Sorry, that i cannot show it because it's a bit hard to represent it now.
in every game ther is a science/history youtuber for league of legendes its letsreadsmallbooks and for aoe2 its u what i want to say is good work pls keep going
It was a fun and interesting campaign, and I enjoyed this historical analysis too, thanks man keep up the good work. BTW Google Translate is a useful tool to quickly check how names should be pronounced ;P
TheRadPlayer Both equally wrong. From Romania to northen Greece there's the tracic people: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fd/AtlBalk.e-150.jpg Slavs are from Russia around to Serbia and Magyars mostly in Hungary. Point being this campaign was doomed for inacuracy from day one. As an aside, both Slavs and Magyars are pseudo-ethnic groups. not actual civilizations, not that it's a new thing for AoE what with Celts or Saracens.
While Dracula himself wasn't Hungarian, he fought alongside them/received assistance from them several times. Additionally they were the most powerful christian power around Wallachia at the time. So it's not crazy that Vlad's army is represented by the Magyars.
I like how you analyze game mechanics. Would you ever consider doing an analysis of game balance at different population limits? It would seem that your villager to army mix would have to change, and that the effectiveness of buildings would also change.
Just a little correction, the portuguese colonization of Brazil did not start until around 1530, they had some scaterred trade posts to collect brazilwood, but permanent habitation only begun in 1532 with the foundation of São Vincente. Love your videos BTW
Cool! Great video! So I'm a big fan of CBA's (RM too!). And did anyone else notice that the red player in the CBA clip in the intro didn't wall himself very well? xD
Haha, I thought it was a bit goofy. That wouldn't be so much a problem for me if they'd at least pronounced the names correctly. The Portuguese narrator pronounces Juan as if it were Spanish. Portuguese pronunciation of the J is just like in English.
great video, quite interesting and a nice content extension for your channel(history/Lore) Also could you make a video about interactions between huskarls/eagles/catas/hand cannoners/jannisors/conquistadors/slingers/condottiero/hscorpions and so on( what kind of damage they do? are they viable?)
Some things to say about the campaign: Long comment: The history is interesting, Scenario 1 I was able to obtain a monk before being given the purple, so just battle most of the yellow and orange until a little bit is left and then research redemption and convert most ally buildings and villagers and this will give you villagers and town center research techs and also destroy most of the grey even before they turn against us. Then finish the objective and it becomes easy. Scenario 2, I first take all my starting units to find and rescue the allies down there since the waves of attackers prevent me from being able to get resources. I begin by then defeating the yellow and the cyan first. Then I wall off the green from being able to attack me by land. Then I research all techs and also defeat the grey ship by converting it and it has heresy and destroy that purple who I don't understand their purpose. Then I give the red a organ gun for objective then I destroy them except their castle first. Then I defeat green and then finish the red castle to win. Scenario 3. This on is tough, I first begin by not bringing any heroes to any objective area, (also scouting the whole sea) but have a unit lure some enemies near the water with my army in transport ship and then on the shore slowly hit and go in transport until I try to eventually defeat the annoying orange and purple enemies first. I try to prevent fighting against zanzibar since he would be a problem for me on water. I would never execute the hero since I like him and his stats are good. But even before kilwa becomes enemy with me, I use bombard cannon attack ground the castle until it has less than 100 hp. Then I bring a hero to the on land town center and go around trying to own or convert every remaining green unit. At this point the yellow become my enemy and their endless waves of war galley. So I defend on land with a castle and begin to fight yellow in water until everything towers castles and ships that can damage me on water is defeated and a galleon on stand ground to hit enemy villager trying to build a dock. Then I defeat them on land and only keep the wonder alive. Then time to build a lot of towers on water and battle zanzibar. I defeat zanzibar and then cannon galleon to finish the scenario with their wonder. Scenario 4: I begin by just defending my self on land by protecting myself against the first waves that attack after the gate dies. Then begin by gaining complete control of the water. The green will always build a dock. I do the secondary objectives and then begin by destroying everything cannon galleon can reach starting with towers and docks. then I carefully position galleons on stand ground so that they become unable to build a dock. this takes about 11 galleons. then I use the area where the pirates that I now own to build feitoria and market and town center with villagers on wood and a villager comes with me to build stuff since the next enemy to focus on will be the cyan I make sure the cyan die and the red I try to replace enemy gates with my own so that they can't escape, then I begin cleaning up red from outside after only defeating the cyan army inside. Then I defeat the green who is difficult with both kinds of elephants in use until I sacrifice 5 trebuchets on their castle. Then they become easier to defeat. then I finish the scenario by defeating the red. Scenario 5: This scenario is easy. Before finishing the conversion objective, I can use mangonel attack ground on those palisades and also research all imperial age and build my economy. Possible to win by building a wonder.Since all the others don't attack me, I can go out and defeat them all and then finish by converting the units and win the whole scenario very easy. Overall while some parts are difficult, it has a lot of things to make the campaign not so pressuring and difficult for casual players.
Hey Spirit, I got an idea for a video. I found out that you only need 11-12 arambai garrisoned in a castle to make it fire 20 arrows, which is the maximum. I found it to be extremely overpowered. If you could calculate the dmg from the castle vs ungarrisoned units combined etc, it could make for a very interesting video. :)
Hi Spirit : Can you do the math of the difference between luring a bore with 7 vils for example than 4 lumberjacks and 3 farms for example ? like this i know what to do if someone steal my bore. THX

thats really cool dude!
This is the best thing I have ever seen on youtube. Both the video and the comment. Great job everyone!
bravo good sir on making such a great campaing!
I don't play AoE that much, but I do think that the Almeida/Portugal campaign is the best, mostly to all of the triggers and complex ways maps can be completed (it is also the only AoE campaign that I played through to the end).
what's up with calling João Juan?
As a Brazilian, Im impressed by your "ão" pronunciation. Most people don't get it right.
Piss of shitspitter
Ya tb eu
I also found that impressive. But nonetheless he could not figure out how to pronounce the “ç” in Lourenço hahahaha was kinda funny
Dude I'm portuguese and you nailed the João pronounciation!
And awesome video as always ;)
Although Lourenço went a bit weird. He should've pronounced 'lou-ren-so'.
Almeida also was very good.
Portugal caralho.
Man the El Cid campaign was so sad....
The last mission...."the soldiers must not know that their Cid is dead."
Well guess what, I KNOW that he's dead. That was kinda demoralizing.
@Miguel Ângelo יְהֹוָה thanks to el cid, spain was recovered or began the recovery of the iberian peninsula of the moors..
@@TheSurvival2012 he is probably a converso or a marrano trying to soil El Cid name.

Spirit of the Law uploads! Rejoice!
Marvelous work on the background research
wow you pronounced "João" pretty well, most people can't pronounce some portuguese words! (im portuguese btw)
Great video! I would like to see some more of the original campaigns
Age of Empires Coach Me too!
Age of Empires Coach yes plz coach me
"Age of Empires Coach Me too!" hahaah
Dude, just keep bringing this types of videos I just love them!
I'm pretty sure the next video is a Portuguese Civilization Overview.
Two videos on the Feitoria and now this... I think you're onto something.
I Agree Max.
Finally he'll tackle the AK civs
its already
Just to assist you with the pronounciation of "Lourenço". In Portuguese the C or Ç is always an S sound when it precedes a voul. The Ç in "Loureço" sounds the same as the Ç in "Chouriço" (chorizo in Spanish). Hope it helps!

Well done!
damn jackels

I think you're right that it's the wrong picture. Why must there be so many Johns?!
Nowadays there is also Juanes. ba dum tss.
It's the wrong Henry as well. That picture is Henry IV of England rather than Castile. Still a great vid.
There was Juan too many :P
yesss, been waiting for a new video!
Oh boy, I love history in my games and having a comparison.. what a time to be alive! No more long wiki articles to grind through. Well done and thank you very much for your effort!
3:31 those are real names lol Audio Science and Speck Wildhorse, poor kids
Pilot Inspektor is kind of badass though.

Hey, I'm another Anglo Indian who loves AOE too!
I like how the details of maps change. the original ones from AOE are so empty after you play some of the new Expansions
I love these Capaigns vs History!!! Do Saladin or "Barbarossa"!! My favourite campaigns.
So much work from you on this serie : good job and thx !
Loving these Campaign videos, hope you do more in the future! Currently working on the Dracula/Slav story.
I Liked this series a lot . please do more of these campaigns vs History.
I love your campaign reviews!!
This video format is really awesome, keep up the work!
Great to have you back, nice video
Buy we need civ overviews pleaseee
This was well researched and interesting to listen to. I even learned a thing or two in it, which is a nice bonus. I like! :)
Man I love these vids +Spirit Of The Law. Keep it up man!
I miss the old campaigns that didn't have overly detailed map layouts and didn't have trigger events every 5 seconds.
what i miss about the old campaigns is the voice acting
Oh god, that too, I tried the first mission of forgotten and noped the fuck out and wanted my money back.
I tried real hard to like new campaigns but they feel like a chore and overdone maps don't help either.
Valerie Aust Simplicity is king!
The detailed maps are nice, but the actual gameplay is either to restrictive or too poorly balanced. And yeah, some of them have way to much RP.
Yet again a great video that fills my little heart with joy
oh nice a new upload great stuff. new to ur channel back in Dec i think and basical binge all your videos
Whenever SOFL uploads something new, I press like first, then watch the vid. I've never had to take that like back!
spirit of fffffte law?
SOTL lol
Manos T Σωστός!
This one was my last completed campaign from the African Kingdoms and somehow I thought it might not be that interesting, but I was wrong. I found it really interesting, diversivied, with good options, nice maps and good challenges - good job forgotten empires.
Hello ; I really like your videos! it is *almost* as good as playing AoE :p
I have a request though ; would it be possible to make a video on trebuchet and the onager line? Would be great! Thanks allot and keep going :)
I love these videos. I actually live in Table bay, South Africa, where Dom Francisco was killed (Mentioned @12:31). Table bay now being a suburb of Cape Town, named so because of its awesome view of Table mountain. :)
Great video, good to have you back!
To: Spirit of the law:
I have been your dedicated follower on your mathcraft about AOE2 and the detail run through on many area I did not know about. Currently I am playing Shogun 2 total war and I am very curious if you can do the same math craft on the stats of that game. Keep up the good work and I really enjoy it.
Great vid, as usual. More civilization overviews, please...
cool, a new campaign vid from The Viper
"JUAN" is pronunced like "who" and "an". Like this:
WHO built AN empire?---> WHO AN
and not like WON, that sounded chinese xD
jitsuzuko Brother, if i'm not mistaken, actually it's only for the spanish language. The portuguese language. However, pronounce it differently. Sorry, that i cannot show it because it's a bit hard to represent it now.
Juan is not even a Portuguese name...
But in Portuguese it would be pronounced something like JU as in juice and AN as in hamburger.
ChemicalVapors Oh, thanks. Yeah, i know it. Anyway, Juan is a spanish name, not a portuguese one.
Basically "Huan"?
jitsuzuko lol i was about to point that out, I just recently learned the literal pronunciation of "Juan" sounds like "one" in English
in every game ther is a science/history youtuber for league of legendes its letsreadsmallbooks and for aoe2 its u
what i want to say is good work pls keep going
It was a fun and interesting campaign, and I enjoyed this historical analysis too, thanks man keep up the good work. BTW Google Translate is a useful tool to quickly check how names should be pronounced ;P
But I want a Joan of Arc one
Liked anyways
I also aked for this in the last video. Let's hope we get more of these awesome vids
+Johnathon F
Oh so this is where you came from. I wish you had videos that I could go and dislike myself. REVENGE
He made one a few days ago
the more i look at "this guy right here" running around the funnier it gets
theviper spoofed you in one of his recent william wallace videos, do a counter-spoof saying 'hey bois!!' in your next video
Now I have to watch all the campaign videos :(
the viper can talk?? O.o
I just noticed the AoE 1 skin for trade cogs, really awesome haha. LEMULLEEE!
In 2rd mission you have to bring the ancient artifact to the castle. They say it was from the ancient Carthage city.
Do the Dracula campaign next.
Mistake number 1. He was Wallachian, not Magyar.
But there is no Wallachian civilization in AoE2. The closest thing they have is Magyar. (or would you have preferred Slav?)
TheRadPlayer Both equally wrong. From Romania to northen Greece there's the tracic people:
upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fd/AtlBalk.e-150.jpg
Slavs are from Russia around to Serbia and Magyars mostly in Hungary.
Point being this campaign was doomed for inacuracy from day one.
As an aside, both Slavs and Magyars are pseudo-ethnic groups. not actual civilizations, not that it's a new thing for AoE what with Celts or Saracens.
Dracula definitely needs his own civ. Imagine the fun we could have with that civ...Dracula may just be the most recognizable name of all time.
While Dracula himself wasn't Hungarian, he fought alongside them/received assistance from them several times. Additionally they were the most powerful christian power around Wallachia at the time. So it's not crazy that Vlad's army is represented by the Magyars.
You should COCAST a few matches with ZeroEmpires on one of the tournaments. The people want you!
The Spice must flow, for he who controls the spice controls the economy of the medieval world!
100 like and 0 dislike that speaks volumes how people love you.
Rise of The Rajas Civ Overviews plz!
Nice! I really like listening to your voice.
your pronunciation is pretty acurate and also your facts, nice job
Good one. It would be great if you could do the spanish/inca campaign from the forgotten, just to round this up with the cortex and almeida figures.
I like how you analyze game mechanics. Would you ever consider doing an analysis of game balance at different population limits? It would seem that your villager to army mix would have to change, and that the effectiveness of buildings would also change.
Upvote for the "Hippietrend to give kids weird names" joke
Portuguese are awesome in this game!
Ya!! new Spirit of the Law videos!!
I love your intro !!
Definitely keep making these.
And did anyone else notice that the red player in the CBA clip in the intro didn't wall himself very well? xD
FletcheR Perhaps the red player didn't have villagers + walling is not that efficient way of defence against Siege Rams.
Yeah well, I was just talking about his gate placement. And yeah...he was dead regardless of good walling. :P
Makes me wanna play EU4 again.
Can we see the "Manzikert" battle Spirit?
Great video again! But I kinda miss the ''Road to 1800'' serie!
As cute as the Jackals are displayed, they can only whisper soft and tender loving words into the owner's ears~
As a native portuguese speaker, I can say that your pronunciation is very good! I'm sure you put some effort into it, nice job !
When can we get a Portuguese tech tree vs history?
Anyone else feel like the voice actors for African Kingdoms were ACTING a bit too much?
James C. Even worse, the speeching in the new rise of the rajas campaign has gone too much for me.
Yeah, Rise of the Rajas is completely off the hook. The guy in the Gajah Mada campaign speaks almost like a caveman.
Haha, I thought it was a bit goofy. That wouldn't be so much a problem for me if they'd at least pronounced the names correctly. The Portuguese narrator pronounces Juan as if it were Spanish. Portuguese pronunciation of the J is just like in English.
James C. I actually won't be surprised if they did talk like that back then
Very late reply. But if we were ok with tutorial's bad Scottish accent we should be ok with what they did in AK and RotR
Does Far side of the world senario makes any sense with this?
It's going to be tricky to do a video on Yodit's campaign, to say the least.
great video, quite interesting and a nice content extension for your channel(history/Lore)
Also could you make a video about interactions between huskarls/eagles/catas/hand cannoners/jannisors/conquistadors/slingers/condottiero/hscorpions and so on( what kind of damage they do? are they viable?)
You should make a history podcast - I would listen : D
Some things to say about the campaign: Long comment:
The history is interesting,
Scenario 1 I was able to obtain a monk before being given the purple, so just battle most of the yellow and orange until a little bit is left and then research redemption and convert most ally buildings and villagers and this will give you villagers and town center research techs and also destroy most of the grey even before they turn against us.
Oooh daym, Spirit back again
Hail to AOE Jesus :>
Hey Spirit, I got an idea for a video. I found out that you only need 11-12 arambai garrisoned in a castle to make it fire 20 arrows, which is the maximum. I found it to be extremely overpowered. If you could calculate the dmg from the castle vs ungarrisoned units combined etc, it could make for a very interesting video. :)
if you want to make videos about gajahmada campagn, you can contact me, im happy to help translate stuff
Great video man!!!! Awesome
That's a good idea for a series!
I have to assume it is historically accurate for the game to crash somewhere about 3/4ths into the first mission. Every time. Without exception. Fuck.
Will you ever do any other age games? Like Age of Mythology and such?
6:18 -- By the way, Duarte's parents were *also* named João and Isabel...
Hey man, i really love your videos but the problem is that they are really rare D: can't you make more of them?
Hi Spirit : Can you do the math of the difference between luring a bore with 7 vils for example than 4 lumberjacks and 3 farms for example ? like this i know what to do if someone steal my bore. THX
For your next History video you should do the Barbarossa campaign
You missed a potential Halo reference there with the whole jackals bit... :P
havr you made the intro music yourself? good vid btw
do more of these series
The cedilha(ç) of lourenço sounds like the s on "so"

@spiritofthelaw still waiting for the Portuguese overview
If you're taking requests, I'd like to see one focused on the Bari campaign
