  • Private Violence explores a simple, but deeply disturbing fact of life: the most dangerous place for a woman is her own home. Every day in the US, at least four women are murdered by abusive (and often, ex) partners. The knee-jerk response is to ask: ‘why doesn’t she just leave?’.
Private Violence shatters the brutality of this logic. Through the eyes of two survivors - Deanna Walters, a mother who seeks justice for the crimes committed against her at the hands of her estranged husband, and Kit Gruelle, an advocate who seeks justice for all women - we bear witness to the complicated and complex realities of intimate partner violence. Their experiences challenge entrenched and misleading assumptions, providing a lens into a world that is largely invisible; a world we have locked behind closed doors with our silence, our laws, and our lack of understanding. Kit’s work immerses us in the lives of several other women as they attempt to leave their abusers, setting them on a collision course with institutions that continuously and systematically fail them, often blaming victims for the violence they hope to flee. The same society that encourages women to seek true love shows them no mercy when that love turns dangerous. As Deanna transforms from victim to survivor, Private Violence begins to shape powerful, new questions that hold the potential to change our society: ‘Why does he abuse?’, ‘Why do we turn away?’ and ‘How do we begin to build a future without domestic violence?’

“He made me go.” If only people understood what a small person their abuser is. How small they felt inside. How damaged they were…. My mother was assaulted one evening after coming home after having drinks with her sister. My SF came unglued. I was only 8 and heard the whole thing. It was so traumatic… I was never ever talked to about the effects on me and eight year old little girl… in the next room with the doors open. He put mom in the hospital. We moved in with my aunt and cousins… but then she went back. He never abused her physicially again. Howeve, He isn’t a good person and if I knew then whAt I know now, I would have felt so much more powerful to make him stop… with my words. I was eight.
education is key. Thank you for sharing.

I’m a survivor……he hit me once that was it…..I left got a 10 year ban from him BUT HE still tried to find me which he did. When I called the police they told me that I should move…..WHAT I was so taken back. I lived in Montreal at the time. It was hell for me after he MOVED INTO THE SAME BUILDING AS MINE. It was truly hell living close to that MONSTER. I FINALLY CONFRONTED HIMAND TOLD HIM TO FFFFF OFF AND LEAVE ME ALONE……. I moved away without him knowing where I was…….I’m at peace now living in a new province……it’s wonderful knowing I don’t have to look over my shoulder anymore or peeking around a corner thinking I’m going to see him. I hope he rots in helll

Wow! You truly are pathetic. You call him a "monster". But you got with him. So, what does that make you?😊😅 Anyway, congrats on the misery.

OMG!! The way he looked back at he as he was lead out of the courtroom!! Intimidation, BIG TIME! That behavior right there is why a lot of women don't go through with their complaint. I know what she was feeling as my first husband did the same thing to me, right in front of the judge! If I had gone back, I wouldn't be here today.. The torture and torment he put me though has left me with physical and emotional problems. That was over 30 years ago. I still panic when I hear any sort of "click" that's my trigger. He used to think it was fun to play russian roulette with me and keep me up for days on end, even when I had to go to work in the morning. The day I left for good was the most frightening day of my life. Thank god I still had my mom and dad. That day I was trying to pack some things to get out and he followed me from room to room knocking my bag off the bed as I tried to pack some clothes. He grabbed me and slammed up against the wall, punched it right next to my head. I managed to get away, as my mom and dad told me to get out of the house and go to my neighbors and call the police. I was so frightened for them, as I left them there with him. He could have killed them both. The most dangerous time is when you are trying to leave. He was and probably still is the devil.
