  • We were delighted to catch up with @LondonBusRestoration at Hooton Park Hangars, Ellesmere Port to see how they're getting on with the restoration of an AEC RT and their new RUclips Channel. You may recognise them from Routemasters 4 Hire, where their work was previously featured.
We also take a quick look at their AEC Routemaster and Bristol LH - both in lovely condition. They and their buses can sometimes be seen at the Open Days held at the Hangars. Next one is 28th April.
HubNut merchandise can always be found at hubnut.org - thank you - you can also become a Channel Member! / @hubnut

Great vlog Ian , I'm so pleased to see Tim and Alan back after the sudden closure of the old channel , they are wonderful guys and the amazing work they achieve with such limited resources is truly incredible , deserving so much recognition for what they do to preserve our glorious motoring heritage .Thanks so much for your efforts in boosting their profile further.

Hello Tim. I was so pleased to hear restoration was continuing despite loss of storage. Hopefully see you at Llandudno 👍. You certainly can’t beat the sound of an AEC in a Routemaster.

Great fun. Like everyone else, these are nostalgic of trips to London as a kid (early 80s). I loved the single cab for the driver, the open platform at the back and the ticket man who'd whizz his machine and doff his cap.

Thanks for this video Ian, I wouldn't have known that the lads have a new channel otherwise. Great to see that they've got set up in their premises and are making fantastic content again. I hope this will send BUSLOADS of subscribers their way!

Was very happy the other week when Tim and Alan popped up on my recommended feed, I think they missed a trick not getting a channel out straightaway when Dave went sailing but I totally get they would suddenly be stressing about the busses. Hopefully the channel will start earning a few quid to help the running. Great video 👍

I remember the Bristol LH from my childhood ( I’m 48) up here in Easington, County Durham. We had short ones with manual gearboxes, never thought I’d see one again. Thanks Ian and Carly

I remember the LH well. When the local bus company, United, needed to replace their aging REs, which were no longer available, they initially bought the longest version of the LH, rather than the Leyland National. By reducing the space between seats they were able to carry nearly as many passengers as the RE, but they were never as comfortable and didn't have the same sound!

Must say a big thank you Ian for this video. I loved watching the old videos from routemaster for hire - especially the progress being made on the RT. I had not realised the guys had started a new channel, upon learning about it from this video i was straight over there and subscribing. So nice to be able to follow the RT resto once again, we were all left hanging when Dave ran off to play with his boat. Being born in south London back in the 60's, both the RT's and the RM's played a big part in my life for many years. Should also add that I also preferred the sound of the original AEC - I had pretty much stopped using the buses when they started to re-engine them, so my memories are of the originals, RM's just did not sound right with the Cummins engines.

A top video from all involved. We often see car restoration but having these old public transport work horses restored is brilliant with so few examples available for spares compared to some cars. Everything was over engineered as these things were designed to last being out and about for many hours for days at a time with all that nasty stop start traffic. Well done everyone and thanks Ian for sharing it with us.

Timing of this couldn't be more coincidental as I was playing with my 1941 Chevrolet SWB 16 passenger School Bus. A genuine Ex San Francisco Bus which I bought from the man who bought it at a city auction back in 1958(!). Still "Original" and un-modified , still has the original 216ci Six and the 3-Speed Manual+Overdrive. I'll be keeping an eye out for their channel and the various updates. 👍😛

I was about to say I'd never been on a london bus myself, but then remembered that the Go Ahead group transferred some of the boris bendy buses up to the north east, putting them on routes around Gateshead and Newcastle, so, I have in a way, but definitely not something like the routemasters and such... :P

Worked for a coach operator in SW London that had Plaxton bodied LH coaches with the very clunky Leyland 5 speed manual box. They were quite pleasant to drive but the company's livery was a bright pink. They were a bit sluggish when fully laden, if only they had a 680 would have been much better, that would have meant a higher chassis and defeated the lower floor height advantage over a Leopard.

I used to ride the RT on the 105 bus route from Hanger Lane to Heathrow to plane spot from the top of Car Park 3 or, if we were lucky, the Queens Building. I can’t recall if they were replaced with Route masters at a point, but the RT’s were slow enough to make a running jump if a driver decided to miss a stop, predominantly because as a small child, we were fair game to skip stops leaving a lone kid in the dark after band practise…
