$120.00 paper towel dispenser seems like a really bad idea, and you definitely proved that.
Yes. It's the kitchen equivalent of designer purses. You can get the gullible to buy anything.
@@hawkpaul8735 atleast this does something different for the price. But considering a normal holder is like $5 its not worth it
@@krispypepper1898 or even the commercial brand, theyre like 80
I fully understand automatic paper towel dispensers in places like a public bathroom for sanitary reasons, but I agree that this is just a really expensive bad idea when a cheap dispenser works just fine.
honestly, the issues seem more like engineering problems than conceptual problems. it works fine if you figure out the technique, but... a $120 paper towel dispenser shouldn't require any technique
Maybe they figure if you're buying a $120 paper towel holder, you're buying the good paper towels 😂
That's what I was thinking... Bounty or bust 😂
Dollar tree paper 📜 towels stand no chance 😢
Or you spent all your money on the holder that you can afford the paper towels
That makes sense
The only paper towels worth using are the Viva Signature Cloth. Everything else is trash in comparison. There was no way I was buying this dispenser to begin with, but once I saw that it didn't work well with cloth paper towels I knew it was completely worthless.
It looked to me like the towel tended to bunch when you weren't supporting it from the middle. Because it retracts quickly and suddenly, there was tension on the top third of the towel (where it was being held) before you were able to let it go. That created the uneven pull. It also makes sense that horizontal layout retracted better because it wasn't being held anywhere and could just lay flat.
I was thinking the same thing.
I agree user error.
@leggoMyLamb @soadeds
Though I should say that the instructions should be good enough to prevent this sort of thing! He reads the instructions and watched their official video on it. Everything should have been more than clear, so ultimately it is the company's fault.
Yep, noticed that too.
You can buy commercial hands free paper towel dispensers for a lot less money. They are made better and use the standard rolls of towels. The only downside is that the towels are paper based and not a real replacement for a consumer paper towel like Bounty. But they are very suitable for getting after spills or drying your hands.
This thing solves a problem that doesn´t exist.
Isn't a lot of newer tech a solution looking for a problem? These things blow my mind that they even make them
Most of the time I need a paper towel is when my hands are wet or have in some form food products on them. In that case I don't want to touch the roll and get it wet or food stuff all over them. Especially while cooking it is very handy to not neeing to touch the roll. So I wouldn't say the problem doesn't exist. I wouldn't spend 120 however to solve that problem.
I don’t even think it’s solves the problem 😂
Having too much money is serious problem for some. 😂
And creates more…
Using paper towels was never that hard to begin with, this thing complicates the simple act of grabbing a paper towel 😂
I had the same problem at a job I worked at.. They purchased a $500+ napkin dispenser, and the problem was refilling it! Some employees would get frustrated spending literally minutes trying to get it to dispense properly after refilling it. Some times it would give you a red light and stop. Other times a green light, then when you take some napkins, it would switch to red and you would have to start all over trying to get it to dispense again!
After a year, we replaced it with the old fashioned gravity fed napkins. And everyone was happy! Some times technology gets in the way, and reminds us that old times are better!
make sure that you are closing the door correctly.
Less "old times" and more "simple times"
that doesnt make sense, how is it gravity powered? if it was, it would all fall out
@@Blox117 The slots for traditional paper towel dispensers are designed to help ensure the towels don't do that - at least in theory. If you put too many in it still jams the bottom ones, and you need to make sure you're using the right size. But gravity fed basically means the pile gets smaller as more towels/napkins are removed from the bottom.
@@ShintogaDeathAngel so its not actually gravity fed it's manual
I think laying it down is the best way to keep it from becoming uneven on the rewind. It seems gravity is just messing up the rewind and it's pulling it in with a tilt which causes it to jam. Takes more space laying down but to me it seems like the best position for it.
Was thinking the same thing
For 119$ it should be programmed to know there is something called gravity. If it worked I would hang it under the cabinet and save countertop space.
@@charisma-hornum-fries ah I wish electronics were that easy. With added complexity adds cost in manufacturing and engineering. It's really not that easy.
@@humble2246 the thing already costs 120$. That's more than enough to expect it to be tested properly and function without issues.
Don't excuse lazy manufacturers selling faulty crap.
@youshimimi yes i agree however the solution she is referring to is just on another world
Can I just say- I appreciate how thorough you are in your reviews
Fr
This almost feels like an april fools product vid lol :)
I noticed that almost every time you closed the dispenser you only closed the top and the bottom didn't close as much as the top.
You can tell because the spacing between the top and the bottom is different.
When you had it lying down it was forced to close the door evenly on both sides and that is probably why it worked better.
I noticed this as well. It was bugging me so much!
Pretty sure this is why it did not work very well.
I saw that too. The rollers had enough pressure at the top where it was latched, but too loose at the bottom where it wasn't latched causing it to bunch up.
So I reached out over on Twitter and James said that he tried closing it on both sides with the same result. I guess it does need to lie flat or it doesn't work at all? Weird that once it is righted after lying flat it works too?
Kirkland brand works great in ours. I also usually pull more out when we program it. DO NOT HOLD IT after you close the door to program it. Let the machine do its thing. You were holding the end of the paper towel each time the thing got jammed… When you did not hold it it worked - including when it was on its side…
Sitting here yelling at my screen, "Stop holding it!!" didn't seem to be working, so I had to come to the comments and at least see if someone else was yelling with me. Now I feel better. 😆
@@Karadoxical100% the same. So frustrating to watch him jam it over and over and then be like - huh maybe it’s the paper towels or maybe it’s the direction I am loading it.
I was yelling at my phone too so I'm glad I wasn't alone. JUST LET GO OF IT!!!
It was so frustrating that he kept holding it. Any resistance will cause the rollers to slip and pull unevenly causing it to bunch up. Also these use an optical sensor to know when it reaches the end of the paper when retracting. All you need is like an inch of paper sticking out to start with.
because pulling on a roll of paper is hard.
😂
You are a gem for making sure I don’t spend money on things that don’t need fixing.
This is going to be on my top 10 things in 2023 I didn't want, never asked for and didn't buy.
Really nice review James. I think if you are spending over 100 then it should work far better than it does. If It cost £30 then I would consider buying it. Any more than that is far too much.
What's next, a $120 toilet paper dispenser? 😮
😂
They actually are out there.
And lazy?
@@arianrhod oooh stop.. you know if you won the lottery you would buy all kinds of worthless stuff.
@@philflake 😄😄😄😄
For $120 I expect it to cut my paper towels to specific sizes, not just dispense them. Like napkin size, small size, big size. Also for it to work everytime without issue...
The custom sizing device could be a decent product. I suggest you check into it and possibly start a kickstarter or whatnot if you don't find enough competition to already exist. So many ways to spin that as being eco-friendly as well as shopper friendly... could even be an opportunity to re-brand existing paper towel product. I could even see this being a commercial/industrial item that becomes ubiquitous.
Just wait for their next revision which will require you to use only their DRM chipped paper towels.
The next revision after that will offer a paper towel subscription where you'll pay a monthly subscription fee and if you cancel early, it'll incinerate the remaining paper towels.
The fail was wasting $120 on a paper towel dispenser.. are we really getting that lazy that we need technology to give us a paper towel?
Maybe it’s good for avoiding cross contamination
Getting that lazy? We have been there for a long time.
Yes, cause some of y'all dont even use soap
@@Rawr98 we’ve made it this far… if you’re concerned about cross contamination at this point in life then maybe paper towels will the last thing you gotta worry about
@@meegstomtom that’s true
I’m really impressed that you cracked the code. I hope you take a few minutes to message the company and let them know. They could update their instructions with this information.
Well it's more than I would pay for it. I am glad that you were able to play around with it and get it working. From watching when it failed, I kinda thought it needed what you ended up doing to get it working. Great review.
You know what the problem is? Bounty works because it’s taller and do stays in place. The other rolls are shorter so they don’t stay in place. When the gadget is stood up and the paper retracts, since nothing is holding the roll in place, it wiggles around inside and says it jams. The gadget will always work if there was something to hold the roll in place inside! 😂
There is a $30 paper towel ratcheting holder, I LOVE that one, the ratcheting mechanism let's you rip off 1 piece or multiple just with how fast you pull
What's the brand?
@@Zaguzah kamenstein
The paper towel and TP dispenser were perfected many, many, many long years ago. This is something nobody wanted, nobody asked for and nobody is going to buy.
30 bucks is also too expensive and probably over complicates something that works well, has worked well and will continue to work well at 1/6th the cost.
One of these days Amazon is going to recommend a 500 Dollar TP dispenser that takes 50 Dollar rolls of TP. This special app-controlled dispenser is going to automatically dispense the right amount of TP and order me new rolls when I'm getting close to running out.
We have app controlled cups and toasters. So why not?
@@tarstarkusz If you have the money, and you frequently end up with only one hand available, I mean why not.
@@ezioauditore7636 It's your money. Spend it how you see fit.
I laughed my ass off when I saw the title of the video. Who the hell thinks that someone who would pay that much for a paper towel dispenser would even use paper towels?
Wow $120 is definitely alot for a paper towel dispenser, even OXO doesn't cost that much ($25) but its not electronic or motor powered. Thank you for the review i definitely have to show my wife this video 😄
This has to be one of the funniest videos you’ve made! 😂
I would think having a guide inside to thread it behind would help to keep even pressure on the paper as it retracts. Or maybe a spool that you could tighten on the roll to stop the roll moving inside.
Yet another one of those thngs NOBODY needs---enjoyed the review and enthusiasm!! Also how in the heck did this make it to a production model!!
You are a highly intelligent, extremely motivated and persistent person who spent all this time on the totally pointless. Highly entertaining!
Yeah, he started to show more useless products in these past several months to "reinvent" the channel.
@@GanNing221It's more that he already tried so much of the actually good stuff that more of the goofy or "who really needs that" stuff is left.
But he still thoroughly tests everything and does honest reviews. That's what matters most to me.
He didn't follow the insteuctions so idk about the intelligent part. Manual shows the dispenser on its side when loading.
Would like to see how it performs when the roll is almost depleted. Also, how close do you have to be to activate it? It would be annoying to have it spit out towels when you're just walking past it.
How lazy have we gotten, to pay $120 for an automatic paper towel dispenser, but it was a great review 👍👍👍
Would be good for when your hands are messy and don't want to get the entire roll contaminated. But you can also buy devices for less than $120 to do that.
I just got a paper towel holder from the Dollar Tree. It's made out of plastic and it's the kind that you screw into the wall. It has two arms that hold the paper towel roll. And that's it. it doesn't take up space on the counter and it can't fall into the sink because it's above the sink on a holder. I don't see any need to buy anything super expensive for paper towels
I was hoping you'd try a mostly empty one to see how that fares. I bet it stops working as it gets thinner and lighter.
Truly a solution for people who are afraid of germs and viruses. Might as well buy one of those public bathroom paper towel dispensers! The towels will last longer because you can get larger rolls and the size is usually between a half and full sheet of normal paper towel rolls. Only thing I'm unsure of is what type of quality you can get the public bathroom paper towel rolls. Most I've seen are pretty low end "paper-y" rather than high end "cloth-y".
Are you sure when it was upright the bottom was pushed closed as well as the top. I felt it wasn't quite closed properly at the bottom.
This is why the "lay it on its side" technique worked. The door not being closed mean uneven roller pressure. I wish James would have noticed this, but I can't blame him. The device should detect the door being closed when both sides are latched.
Thanks for the review. It reminded me that I have to put paper towels on my shopping list for tomorrow. 😊
one of the main differences seems to be you are holding the paper towel by the top edge creating some tension as it tries to retract the towel when it is standing up. When you put it on its side you were leaving it alone and it was supported evenly by the table so it could retract evenly. I think you were kind of messing it up
I was going to buy this, thanks for saving me the frustration . Great review as always, thank you! ❤
He had issues because he didnt follow the manual. They clearly show the dispenser on its side when loading/programming.
I own the under the cabinet model. I really hated it at first due to all the problems I was having. Quickly learned if you're not using bounty it doesn't work well. You also have to learn to made a quick and clean pull when you use it.
Thank you so much for your reviews. You save us from spending so much money as well as prevent us the hassles of returning items. You should be a comedian. 👍👍👍
Why so many youtubers doing the preview of the video before the video thing again? I thought we moved past that editing relic. Guess attention spans are relapsing lol
I know I’m sick of it too. Always gotta mash fast forward
If want you want is a hands free towel dispenser, you can get a commercial unit pretty cheap. all of the units google shows when searching "electric towel dispenser" come in at under a hundred Dollars
They use the cheap bulk brown paper rolls you tend to see in public restrooms, so the running costs will be lower as well.
Lol. This reminds me of when I was a kid back in 1967 and my Grandpa gave my sister an old camera to take pictures at Expo 67 in Montreal. This camera took film on a roll which had to be loaded and fed through various sprockets and spring tensioners before closing the door. Try as we might we could never get the film to load properly. It would either jam or wind backwards and the picture number usually just stayed at 24. And although my sister pointed it at various attractions and pressed the shutter button, we never did get any pictures of Expo 67.
Definitely the best idea for paper towel holder. Is those ones that click as you pull so it gives tension. Simple easy and nothing to mess with like this hahaha
“I think we’re on a roll here!” Congratulations on success but mostly for the pun.😂
The paper towel holder that I use is one that my mother purchased when John F. Kennedy was president. Still works just fine. Does not require electricity either.
Oh gosh just grab a paper towel. I never saw a problem.
I wonder if it's the holding/touching the paper towels plus gravity causing a misalignment when first putting the roll in that screws with it, that's why the side loading works so well, especially because the papertowels are even supported on the first retraction
When James said "were off on a roll here now", I waited for him to look at the camera with a deadpan look on his face and say, pun not intended, lol.
This would be a pretty neat $40 product. Could help reduce use if you have a paper towel hog at the house.
I've been using the under cabinet version for about a year now with it in the horizontal configuration. Works great for me, even with cheap paper towels. There's nothing like needing a paper towel and waving your hand in front of the sensor and being able to grab and rip the towel without having to deal with the towel roll. Was worth it to me.
Freakin' Reviews has finally transcended "reading the instructions", Now you MAKE the instructions.
This one of those things that I say "why do anyone need it?" about. Almost feels like more of hassle than pulling one or two sheets of from a normal dispenser.
So I noticed you often held the paper towel outward before it pulled it in. There might be enough tension there to cause it to bunch up. Can you try just closing it and not touching the towel?
A$120 solution to a problem that doesn't exist.
Ice wizard of paper towels. Overly complex and tries to solve a problem that doesn't exist
It seems to me that the problem is that you have to senter the towels in the slot 100% perfect before closing the lid, or the dispenser will pull on the towels and crumple the paper.
Or manby the dispenser only works vertical.
I'd have a return code from Amazon within the first 10 minutes of using it. No wait, I would never have spent $120 on a paper towel holder. P.T. Barnum has to be laughing his ass off.
You actually gave that product value now, we appreciate it playa
It appeared to me that the problem was, you were holding the towel before it retracted, which caused it to bunch. After you tear the towel, you shouldn’t need to hold the excess and guide it back in.
That's awesome that you figured out how to make it work! 😂
James, the OG paper jammer....you're better than I am, I'd have taken out my 22 and blew that thing to kingdom come! Happy Wednesday 👍
I think @KentuckyBallistics using his "The 4 BORE Rifle (The Biggest Rifle EVER !!!)" would do a great job of sending it to kingdom come and having the SloMoGuys record it at like 100,000 frames per second would be the cherry on top.
@@bikenyI’d like to see video of that!!!
I bought a lovely paper towel holder at the Goodwill Store for $2.
No moving parts, no programming, no plug in. No problem!
I think part of it is that it needs the towels to be almost perfectly straight when you tear it. If you tear the towel so that the remaining towels go towards the top or bottom it catches and then causes it to "jam" up a bit. I wouldn't go for a $120 paper towel dispenser but it was a fun review to watch.
Yeah it's finnicky about the angle and placement. Good idea WHEN it works!
This is the perfect product to tell the world "I have too much money; please take some from me"!
This is a very mature technology that you see in just about every single public bathroom. To see this fail so hard means these people have no clue how to engineer a product like this
Kudos for how patient and encouraging you were towards it as I could see it was trying.
Still, $120 and all that fussing to get it to work - I'll stick with the one which came installed under the cabinet with the house when I bought it.
My only question so far… did you send it back and asked for a refund?! Cause you should in my opinion 😂
Like cocaine, a $120 paper towel dispenser is God's way of telling you you've got too much money. Admittedly, not as harmful to your health, but my lack of patience with inanimate objects would get my blood pressure dangerously high.
I have a 20 yr old paper towel holder under my counter, LOVE IT!!!
I've had the wall mounted version for many years. Never an issue. Buy them for gifts all the time. I paid 79 dollars on Amazon.
There are already so many kitchen gadgets that require an outlet, I would never consider buying an electric paper towel dispenser
I have to think it would get worse the closer to the end of the roll you got too considering as you said, theres no spool for the paper towel roll. Id think long term the only way for it to be consistent would be laying down but then its so much counter top real estate.
Like many new and 'smart' new gadgets, it provides a solution to a non-problematic issue
About 98% of these gadgets are solutions looking for problems that just don't exist.
Must be very satisfying to figure out a way to make it work consistently
I would also use the cheap paper towels because I spent all my money on the dispenser :)
This just marginally more useful than that stupid Juceiro from 6 years ago🤣
Because pulling a paper towel is too much work apparently.
I Never seen Soooooo Much Hassle over a Problem that doesn't Exist. Just tear your paper towel yourself a save $100. 😂
I was just thinking how much time and energy I waste dispensing and ripping paper towels. Now I can finally start living!
Yet every restroom in universities have automatic towel dispensers that work fine even after being punched by thousands of hungover freshman.
The real fail is anyone that would spend $120.00 for a paper towel dispenser.
Looks like there is a second latch on the bottom side of the door when standing up. The gap isn't even and I'm guessing the rollers aren't contacting on both sides evenly, that's why it's bunching. Close the door tighter until you hear a click on both sides is my suggestion.
Could see this for a 3D resin printing setup. Hands-free would be helpful
Omg you're right! God that would be super useful
Looking at the manual they only show it being loaded while on its side not when it is standing up. So that means you are suppose to use it laying down because it was originally designed to be mounted under the cabinet.
"I think we're on a ROLL here!"
Indeed we are!
Georgia-Pacific bought Innovia and changed the shape from the original. Towel would retract into open space and now into roll folding them onto themselves. It may cost $$$ but so do paper towels and more every week so this has paid for itself saving waste and protecting towel roll. I hope they bring it back in stock, this along with touchless soap & garbage can should be in every home.
Wish it wasn't so expensive. As cool as it is I can't see, in this day & age when so many people have to take out a 2nd mortgage to buy groceries, spending that amount of money on a paper towel dispenser. 🤷♀️
A learning curve for paper towel is wild
Thanks but no thanks. On the other hand, the paper towel topper is arguably the best item I've ever bought per your review.
Just get the plastic for the top of the paper towel roll. Cheap and effective.
"Off on a roll here now..." I see what you did there.
This is like someone went, "man, I LOVE dealing with printers...how can I spread that pain and frustration to other rooms of my house?" But hey, at least it doesn't require an app that and account. It doesn't require an app and account, right?...
I’d like one of these for tp, I have a cat that always likes to try to eat it so we have to hide it from her. Although, she may be smart enough to find a way to trigger the motion detection 😅
People are that lazy that they are willing to spend 120 dollars on a paper towel dispenser.
I can't see spending that much money for something like that but I do like the fact that it remembers the amount you pulled. I can't stand the "pick a size" paper towels, I always want a large sheet so I try to pull 2 small sheets together and they mostly tear apart and I'm stuck with 2 small sheets instead of 1 big one. It's annoying.🙄
He keeps all brands of paper towels in business. How many different kind of rolls do you keep man? 😂
Thank you for your review on this product. At this price it should work flawlessly.
Finally that my printer has been working correctly, this thing comes into existence!
What is the difference between this paper towel dispenser and the ones we can find is some bathrooms in stores, restaurants, hospitals and other public places?
