  • Hey!
I am a University student majoring in Media, Film, and Communications. I post my short films, reviews, and discussions about film and art on this channel. In this video, I am talking about the controversy popularized on Twitter related to the 2023, Best Picture Nominee, Poor Things, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. Many users have suggested that the film is pedophilic and pornographic. This video debunks such suggestions and iterates the importance of media literacy in critiquing a piece of art or media.

The whole movie pretty much revolves around Bella’s journey towards mental liberation and independence but the fact that this completely flew over people’s heads and only the sex part of it became the talking point says a lot about how they viewed the movie rather than how it was actually presented.
    Great video, btw!

I agree, it's supposed to deconstruct the innocent female/born sexy yesterday trope and how the movie eviscirates that trope through Bella's journey

it is no less than a blessing to see him make something like Poor Things and to see this kind of film get some recognition

Yeah I agree with what you said! Although there is a disturbing factor that it's a child's brain but again it's a film which is about Bellas growth it shows how much she learns and how her experiences shape her to become who she is and she finds her self in the end she learns and she grows. Amazing video!!!!!!.

I feel like the film is diving into/following through on the trope 'born sexy yesterday' ( I was introduced to by the Pop culture detective )
Think the character who she initially married isn't condoned by the film the way mark ruffolo character is even though I think he is guilty of similar things.

I'm on the side of the fence that says the movie contains aspects of pedophilia but it's very nice to hear someone who opposes this opinion. I think both sides of the argument are completely valid. It just depends on how you look at it. The way I see it it's a baby's brain and a woman's body who's going around on a sex adventure. Obviously Bella is ignorant of what she's doing, as well as some of the men because they don't know the experiment that Willem Dafoe did. So I don't see any of the characters being pedophiles in the sense that they don't understand the full context of bella. However from the audiences perspective, pedophilia is rampant throughout the whole story considering the mental age of bella.

I think it’s the characters being INNOCENT that makes people feel uncomfortable about a grown man having sex with a grown woman with a child’s brain. I didn’t hate the movie, it was pretty great actually, but that was my first thought while watching the film was “does Duncan like children or does he just like her innocent mind” …..

@clowicous I understand that it's trying to show that powerful men like to take advantage of for lack of a better term don't mind and women. However with the full context of why she's acting this way, the plotline gives off feelings of pedophilia for me.

Remember that 38 US states allow underage marriage down to 12 years old, often because of _religious beliefs held by the parents who authorise the marriage, _ or because the child is already pregnant regardless of statutory rape legislation.

@@JCJW101 you know math? do you know 38 is larger than 1? Let me randomly pick a state ... worst than 5050 if it's actually 38//50... 16 years old is underage or perhaps not for you and your wife sister. So Washington state has a 16 year old statutory age... that is teen and young. Same as Alaska, so I my 2nd pick of 2 states. Why dont you pick a state that is not one of 38. Wny not guess Texas, NV, OK, CA, TN, NC, or West Virginia to marry a 12 year old. Please do not marry you own daughter which is illegal in all states...
