I have to say your explanations are great. When I started as a vSphere admin back 1.5 years ago I knew barely nothing and your channel especially helped me during my start and made me understand basic concepts very clearly. I still come back to refresh my knowledge and you never dissapoint. Thank you!

yes....That's correct..vDS works at management layer whereas proxy host still sits on every esxi host to take care of packet forwarding. vDS simplifies Admin life in terms of managing switch policies and configuration for ex. portgroup creation, VLAN Taggging, NIC teaming etc.. But creating Adapter such as VMkernel adapter is specific to that host......it takes of packet switching only for that specific host...hence admin has to create vmkernel adapter at every host level based on implementation and requirement.
Very good information on the fundamental concepts of Vmware networking. Thank you so much. Just wondering if you need to monitor the inter-vm traffic in Esxi environment how to do it? Basically how to bring inter-vm traffic to external NIC on the host so that Intrusion Detection Systems can detect this traffic through the SPAN port on the external switch. Any suggestions will be helpful.
Hi Sai Krishna You can mirror the vm traffic to external device/external uplinks by configuring Port Mirroring Capabilities on Virtual Switch. These capabilities are only available in vSphere Distributed Switch.

Just an FYI guys, VMkernel ports however still need to be configured on each ESXi's and cannot be done through the vDS.
