- A BIG Thank You to UMG for allowing this video to stay up Worldwide. Maybe WMG should learn something from UMG.
I've been a fan of this Musical God since the early 70s. Shawn has a 4 octave voice.

Songs:
This has got to be the longest named song on record - bet that blew the record labels mind.
1. She Was Waiting For Her Mother At the Station in Torino and You Know I Love You Baby But It's Getting Too Heavy To Laugh (WOMAN)
2. Breakthrough
Shawn Phillips (February 3, 1943 - ) helped define folk-rock in the sixties and progressive-new-age rock in the seventies. "...an artist of such raw talent, ambition and good will...Phillips' main attraction is still his voice. Reedy and flexible, with a remarkable falsetto, it is a potent dramatic instrument. " that's what Rolling Stone Magazine had to say about Shawn Phillips, a musician whose work literally fits into no category. Shawn Phillips has almost twenty albums to his credit (of which millions have been sold) and a host of associations with some of the most respected names in the industry including Donovan, Paul Buckmaster, J Peter Robinson, Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood and many others, yet he is virtually forgotten except by his cadre of loyal fans. The Texas-born singer/songwriter was called "The best kept secret in the music business," by the late rock impresario Bill Graham. Beginning in the 1960s, Phillips made noteworthy contributions to popular music. He co-wrote Donovan's "Sunshine Superman" album, sang on the Beatles' "Lovely Rita", showed Joni Mitchell guitar techniques, and while working with Donovan introduced the sitar to pop music. He performed at the "Isle of Wight" festival and was cast to play the lead in the original production of "Jesus Christ Superstar" (he had to withdraw due to his heavy recording and touring schedule.) Throughout the 60s Phillips' worked the folk music scene in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury, New York's Greenwich Village, and London. In 1967 Phillips moved to Positano, Italy, where he remained throughout the 1970s, writing some of his most well known work. This period produced the albums 'Contribution', 'Second Contribution', 'Collaboration' and 'Faces".
A very long time ago (early 1970s), I had the pleasure of seeing Shawn Phillips several times. He is astonishing in any venue, and with a band or solo. Once, the opening act was a then-unknown duo called Hall & Oates.
I named my first born son....Casey Shawn....in honor of Shawn's friend (Casey Deiss) and in honor of Shawn, who music and lyrics have served as an inspiration to me since 1971.
Love it.
Oh how glorious to hear Shawn again, been too long. I used to spend hours listening to the one album I had. Shawn is in a class by himself.
Thanks.I have missed Shawn Phillips and actually have a personal connection, many years ago
Ce chanteur a bercé mon adolescence! Que de souvenirs...Merci!
A long time ago, in a tiny corner of the world, an impossibly sad young man somehow go through it all.....Shawn made the going easier. Thank you.
Shawn Phillips and Joni Mitchell are both geniuses. Both were "there" when I was struggling to find myself and grow up during the early 70s and overseas in the military. Exceptional talent, Joni of course had the recognition she deserved, but I'm happy see so many of Shawn's fans still around and faithful.
Simply lovely. Late 60’s Upstate NY. Rochester. Amazing yogi. Many shows over the years in Rochester. Definitely imprinted by him, his music and musicians from Eastman School of Music. INSPIRING!
Che bello che qualcuno ancora si ricordi di Shawn Phillips.
Artista tanto grande quanto sottovalutato.
@bikeymikey748 Absolutely....thank you Shawn Phillips for many, many years of Love, Peace, and ""Clarity"!!!
This Tribute to Shawn Phillips is in-freakin'-credible! You did an amazing job... and thank you soooo much!!! The sound is amazing... especially through headphones!!! This must have been a labor of love for you... and it is very much appreciated by Shawn's uber-fans!!! Make more... make more! :-)
Health, Love & Clarity...
PEACE & XOXO
He takes me to another place, have loved his music since I was a teenager back in South Africa in the 70s, Saw him perform at a small theatre in Orange Grove and after the show he sat on the stage chatted to all.
Excellent tribute - The album Furthermore has been a favourite of mine for 40 years. Thanks so much for posting this.
My sister and I saw Shawn in Moncton NB a few years ago, oh, what a joy...Just an amazing musician! Wish he'd return soon...
His collaborations with Paul Buckmaster and J. Peter Robinson are some of the most remarkably enchanting compositions of the last century and beyond. Someday...they will receive the recognition they so richly deserve.Had the pleasure of seeing them perform together in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1975. A truly spiritual experience...
I stumbled across Shawn while in the military in '82. Loved his album but didn't find him again until '19.
Glad I did!!!
To be a King defined by his first knight has been an extra special privilage. Love you man.
Shawn Phillips is a legend !!!
Breakthrough is breathtaking, I find myself craving it. Thank you so much for posting this, so glad to have found Shawn Phillips again after a too-long hiatus. :>)
Been listening to Shawn since the 70's and never, never want to stop! Thanks for the post.....I miss his music so!
The 1st song SWWFHMATSITAYKILYBBIGTHTL aka Woman is on the album Second Contribution. It's most likely still available on CD. The 2nd song Breakthrough is from the album Furthermore, which is out of print, but it's available as a digital download at itunes ,amazon etc.
Guess I'm getting old but I remember when this was first came out. It still plays an important roll in my life. Shawn remember the first time we met? Then again 7 or 8 years later in NYC you picked me out of the crowd and we went back and talked for hours after a cheese-burger. then years later you met my young son Shawn upstate NY on your No Category tour 2002 I think.
Just beautiful
I like it. The feel of his music reminds me a lot of Jimmy Spheeris, RIP.
He is the instrument, like Tim Buckley
I am a long time devotee of Shawn's music. My brother introduced me introduced to his music in the 70's. I cry when I listen, but it's tears of life's struggles that make it all interesting. I would love to hear him in person...is this even possible?
Sarah: Shawn still performs occasionally. He is in his 70s. Several years ago, one of his vocal cords were damaged in a botched surgery, so, sadly, his range isn't quite what it once was. Still, he's a treasure.
The guys a genius !!!
Ah. Thank you SacredMojo for sharing this loveliness. It's been a long time.
Shawn Phillips, from the "unknown" sitar player on Donovan's "Season of the Witch, Guinevere & possibly even others", to his album Second Contribution, which took many of us South African appreciators of great music, into its spell. What a Soul this man has & you can feel it through his music. Long may he run ! What a GREAT tribute you put together.
He married a South African and has a home here - they have a son together. Been an adoring fan for years.
gets better every time I hear it!
Summer 1971...
Place des Nations, Montreal
One man, one guitar under the stars
One bottle of southern comfort...and
that voice in the still of the night
an absolutely riveting performance
Shawn: Montreal remembers you!!
My memories of the peripheral are vague, Shawn opened in Vancouver, I think for Bowie but not sure because I saw every concert in the day, but the songs - especially Woman - are indelible. I don't personally know anybody that got it so passionately as I inescapably feel to this day... but obviously and thankfully we are many. Thanks for putting this up for us.
Wonderful video - great tribute ~ *****
saw him in ChiTown, still have Tshirt and several posters, and doubled up on vynals, some unopened and Advent Speakers, yeah was a outstanding performance
I will see Shawn on July 21st at the Mucky Duck in Houston... again. Why he is not at Cynthia woods Mitchell Pavilion (biggest Houston venue, hosting bands like Rush among others) is just an indication of the shallowness of today's 'music fans' but what the heck... it is an intimate atmosphere and all the better for those of us who understand that music is a higher form of life and not just something to 'ROCK ON!!!' to. From all of us, thanks for the life that is his music.
I grew up listening to him on Vinyl
un grand artist que mon grand ami @DanielCorberand m'a fait découvrir il y a 20 ans et nous avons eu l'honneur de le voir en spectacle a montreal. quel talent!
I was just talking to Leland Sklar who played bass on a couple of his albums yesterday about Shawn.
Leland has played bass on about every major act's album that need some bass work. Leland is amazing.
He said Shawn was and is still amazing.
He thinks he is living in S. Africa.
I am so ever gratefull to you for the organision of this, more than I can say.
Organising of this, please use the correct syntax.................
Who might you be Mojo?
I had the opportunity to see shawn many, many times as a kid in the 70s to now.., and constantly call the Cactus to see if he's coming back...
Had finally to hang out with him and a small group and a couple of beers one of the nights at The Cactus,,,The guy is amazing....
I remember my first show at the Armadillo.... that was some heavy stuff for a kid...
Thanks for posting this.
Fred
Shawn is playing in Tampa at Skipper's Smokehouse on Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2011. Let's go show him some love! I am in no way associated with Skipper's nor part of any kind of marketing gimmick...just my way of showing how grateful I am.
2nd Contribution...yeah that was the one I had back in the day. Unique dude.....enjoyed it but you couldn't dance to it....:)

@bikeymikey748 Same here it was 1973. We ended up married and are still married.
@SacredMojo You are the kind of person I want in my future world. You comprehend Shawn to the core, as I feel I do.
I have authored an awesome 170-pg. book called Fun and Consciousness which pays tribute to Shawn and especially to his words. I am awaiting feedback from Shawn on how he would like me to proceed. In the meantime, I would love to share it with you, and get your feedback.
Health, love and clarity!
@bikeymikey748

My favourite artist of all time....... As time passes he is still great.I have seen many of his concerts in the last few years, Shawn still rules. What an artist!!!!!
Shawn Phillips' music, voice and the spirituality in it has done it for me ever since I can remember myself growing up as a boy and young man in the 1970s in South Africa. I am still growing up and it still does it for me. I remain in awe, learning from the steps as a I falter and get it right, with my axe in my hand! Thank you sir.
so beautiful, in every way. my father use to listen to this when i was a kid. when i found this song in particular (breakthrough) i cryed. he died when i was 9 so it was wonderful hearing this again thank u so much for posting this
Oh my gosh Donna, this is awesome and I get to see the beautiful face of my birthday sister....I had no idea what an awesome man/vocalist/ musician Mr. Shawn Phillips is...thank you so much for the FIVE STAR TRIBUTE..I am touched by him and you...your sister, Sherry
Thank you Shawn Phillips !!!
Pour moi Shawn Philip C unique , C un géant de la sagesse et du subliminale et un p'tit génie musicale du sensoriel ! 😎
His music and lyrics remind me of the me that existed before I bought into the delusion that life could be measured by the size of ones mortgage, the amount of stocks/bonds owned, and before I worked so many hours that I sacrificed my marriage in the pursuit of becoming a "suit." Well, at least I never took up playing golf or watching Fox TV :-)
Well, congratulations on not playing golf or watching Fox "news" ... I look back with a lot of sadness for opportunities lost, standards lowered, challenges unmet, but with gratitude for all I've managed to drag into the 'plus' column. The memory of "that you" is proof that he's still there. Let him go outside and play once in a while ...
Still sold out though, you should start doing what brings pleasure and harmony to your life............
Who we are remains no matter how much we deny ourselves, crucify or dreams and hearts and give until there is seemingly nothing left. We wait our return to remembrance. We are the brokers of our dreams and the authors of our transactions and transgressions, as well as the Repurchaser of our fallen selves.
Don’t be too hard on yourself. Being a human being is hard and he is the exception to the rule. Most of us are economic slaves and take solace here and there with personal creativity, when one isn’t overwhelmed with life... or...
Taking in and savoring talent like this. I had a rough day. In fact, work has been stressful for a few weeks. I have taken some time tonight to listen to some of my favorites.
I LoVe ThiS! just wanted to come see my friend and hear Shawn's beautiful message...awesome post..Thanks RUclips♥
for every ten million tons of garbage in here,God compensates you with something like this that naturally isn't a part of this world or this life.
This song really reminds me of my brother who just turned 22 today - he loves Shawn Phillips more than most would think possible.
I was so lucky to see him in the late 70s. Just him & his quitar at the Golden Bear in Huntington Beach CA. Long closed, a smallish venue that launched many careers. I love him & his magic music just as much now. Probably more so. I try to share him as he certainly deserves to be better recognized.
Can anyone download "Dream Queen"?
soothes me his voice and music touches me helps me rescues me
Loved all of the vintage photo's! Thank god, for the 70's and to baby boomer generation! What would life been with out them? Shawn Phillips, one gorgeous guy with a hot voice!
Donna, you have definitely found your mojo!
Gosh almighty, how in the world did I manage to forget Shawn Phillips?!!!
Thank you so much for making this wonderful video with a favorite by Shawn..it's truly awesome, just like he is!
Maria Glenn
Not to forget his 'World in Action' soundtrack with Mick Weaver. The best TV show soundtrack ever!
This wonderful man is coming to Houston Texas for a concert. Very small venue. perfect weather is expected. Looking forward to it! October 7. 2010 McGongiels Mucky Duck! Be there !
performances like this don't happen every day,do they? strange feeling, not easily defined...
Shawn is my life, and my very soul!
Shawn Phillips was an icon to me when I was a teenager. Back then, I was not able to speak English and I was living in a middle of nowhere. One day destiny make me talk to him and listen to him like friends. This moment when you met someone that you never taught you will. We chat a little bit about his career, and his live. This moment happen in Glen Sutton Qc. Everybody know that on the last day of the his creation, God create Glen Sutton.
I used to go to Glen Suton every summer in the beginning of the 8o's...i was big fan of Shawn ( i saw him the first time in 73) ...i didn't know Shawn loved Glen Suton ? (i even wrote my first movie there)...and then 40 years later i went to live in Positano for one week just because Shawn live there..i wanted to catch the spirit during one week ...what a strange coincidence ?!!!
