    Your video is the only way I could understand the probability, odds in favor, odds against. I tried for 2 weeks with family members who are amazing at math trying to help me and I could not understand. Plus reading the examples in the text and taking extensive notes. Still no dice. I needed to get this for me to do well in my MAT-144 class. I cannot thank you enough for explaining it so simply so this tired momma could understand.

    how do you calculate probability when the event is biased. For example, a biased coin tossed has a 75 % chance of being tails, how do you go ahead with the problem with this situation.

  • @bobgraham1791
    @bobgraham1791 4 года назад

    Thanks for the video, why do both concepts exist? I mean in what situation would you want to think in terms of odds rather than probability?
    It seems like the formulas are based on words the mean the same thing. So probability is success (which is favourable right?) divided by total possible outcomes (which we would consider unfavourable)?
    What does odds tell me that probability doesn't?

    • @destinyhorton1831
      @destinyhorton1831 3 года назад

      The probability that an event will occur is the fraction of times you expect to see that event in many trials , and the odds are defined as the probability that the event will occur divided by the probability that the event will not occur

    I have a question about winning the lottery; can that be expressed as probability and odds, or just odds?

    • @MariosMathTutoring
      @MariosMathTutoring  5 лет назад

      It can be expressed as a probability (chances of success divided by total possible outcomes) or as odds in favor of winning (favorable outcomes :unfavorable outcomes). However in general I don’t recommend playing the lottery...your best bet is investing in yourself : )

    So gambling odds are given favorable/unfavorable in the house’s perspective and you’re taking unfavorable/favorable perspective?
    if you’re taking betting odds of 3/1
    The house have is looking at 3 wins to your 1
    Basically gambling odds are your chance of losing/your chance of winning?

    I got a question. If the odds against something are 23:57, what are the odds for? And what is the probability that it will happen

    • @adamurmann9369
      @adamurmann9369 4 года назад

      57:23 odd for and i don't get what your second question is

    • @agiokap
      @agiokap 4 года назад

      "odds against" = 23 / 57, so: "odds for" = receprical of "odds against" = 57 / 23
      Also: "odds for" = ( *favorable* (1) / not favorable ), but: ( favorable + not favorable ) = 57 + 23 = *all events* (2)
      But, the definition of the theoretical probability is comprised of things we already know: (1) and (2). Namelly:
      "probability for" = *( favorable / all events )* = 57 / 57 + 23 = 57 / 80 = *0.7125*
      "probability against" = ( 1 - "probabilty for" ) = 1 - 0.7125 = *0.2875*
      (Another way: "odds for" = "probability for" / "probability against" = "probability for" / 1 - "probability for"
      We know: "odds for", so we can solve for: "probability for" through the above equation)

    thank you so much teacher, I have a test tmr, and my teacher literaly didn't even do this kind of explaination. I have a question, I hope you can help me with - " Two dice are rolled, Let A represent rolling a sum greater than 6. Let B represent rolling a sum that is a mulitiple of 4. Determine P(AnB)" I just cant get the second sentence...

    • @MariosMathTutoring
      @MariosMathTutoring  7 лет назад +4

      +CheonG Eric you want to find the intersection of the 2 sets. Multiples of 4 that are also greater than 6 would be 8 or 12....so the probability would be 2/36(it's out of 36 since there are 36 possible outcomes when you roll 2 dice) or 1/18 if you reduce.....if I understand your question correctly. Hope that helps.

    • @geoffiida3315
      @geoffiida3315 3 года назад

      I realize this is four years old, but I think the the answer to P(AnB) in your question is 6/36. Mario is correct that the only sums that qualify are 8 and 12. But, there are five ways to roll an 8, and one way to roll a 12. So, the probability of rolling a qualifying dice combination is 6 out of 36 possibilities.
