  • Multnomah Falls has been on my bucket list since I saw pictures of it years ago on Instagram. It is cooler in person than in pictures. We shot this video in May 2016, a year before the Eagle Creek fire devastated this area in September 2017. The trail to the top reopened in May 2019, and you can see what it looks like now in our AFTER THE FIRE video: • Multnomah Falls AFTER ... .
    On this little road trip, we headed east through Washington past some very scenic overlooks. We crossed the Bridge of the Gods into Oregon and explain where the name came from. Then we checked out the waterfall area of the Columbia River Gorge, stopping at Horsetail Falls, Multnomah Falls, and Latourell Falls.
    We didn't have the time to hike to Oneonta Falls. Next time!

      Thanks, Denise. Yes, the Columbia River Gorge has so many beautiful waterfalls! We're going back there this summer and we'll go on some more hikes for sure. I heard from some locals that the prettiest hike is Oneonta Gorge, and we didn't do that one on this trip. So many amazing places to explore! -Brian

    Nice! We camped at Cascade Locks Marine Park a couple of years ago, just to the East of The Bridge of The Gods ~ sadly this area was closed to traffic because of a fire a year prior. You got some beautiful shots ~ had never seen the overlook from above Multnomah Falls!

      Yeah, we were lucky to go and see this area before it was destroyed by the fire. They just reopened the overlook, but it's not quite the same. -Brian

    I'm glad you got to check this off your bucket list because it's all burning as I type this. We are sick and heartbroken. Kids playing with fireworks. It started above Cascade Locks and has passed Multnomah Falls. The lodge at Multnomah was spared only due to the heroic efforts of the firemen and women. It's still burning out of control and is closing in on Troutdale. This was my happy place and living so close I'd drive that scenic byway any chance I could get. Your video made me happy.

    • @PerfectLittlePlanet
      @PerfectLittlePlanet  7 лет назад

      Oh my gosh, no! I hadn't heard. That is really heartbreaking. :( Hopefully they're able to get it under control and everybody stays safe and out of harm's way. Glad our video could give you a little happiness. I hope the Falls rebound and grow back even more beautiful afterward. -Brian

    I grew up there and loved going to multnomah falls and up historic highway 30 to vista house. So glad the road is open again after last years fires. It was only partially open last spring when I was up there visiting. Did that hike to the top of the falls many times. Glad you got yo see one if my fav places in the world. Oregon and Washington are full of beautiful things to see and do.

    • @PerfectLittlePlanet

      So glad they opened the road again. We went back to Multnomah a few months ago but it was only open to the bridge. We couldn't hike to the top like we did in this video. We also hiked on one of the recently opened trails closer to Eagle Creek and it was eery and surreal hiking through the charred forest, but it was promising to see the new growth coming up. -Brian

      Hey Heath! Good to hear from you. Yeah, we didn't hike Oneonta because we weren't prepared to hike in the water. Sadly, we couldn't hike it this summer either (we spent the summer in Portland this year) because it's still closed from the Eagle Creek fire. Check out the trail closures here: gorgefriends.org/hike-the-gorge/trail-alerts.html

      @@PerfectLittlePlanet Really sad that some dipshit lit fireworks to burn down the gorge. I don't know if he was doing intentially. I really love that place and to see someone burning it down makes me both sad and mad.

    • @PerfectLittlePlanet
      @PerfectLittlePlanet  6 лет назад

      I heard it was intentional, obviously not intending to burn down the entire gorge, but intentionally lighting fireworks during an extreme fire danger period. That's why he got almost 2000 hours of community service and a fine of over $37M.

    I’m thinking of doing a road trip this summer to Oregon (I’m in Alberta, so it would be one heck of a road trip with two kids, but...). How strenuous were those switchbacks? Would a five and six year old be able to handle them, do you think? And is this place just a “day trip” from Portland or are there lots of places to stay nearby? Any suggestions are appreciated! 😃

    • @PerfectLittlePlanet
      @PerfectLittlePlanet  4 года назад

      That would be a great road trip! I'm not sure how long you'll have, but if you have the time, you could break up the drive with stops in Glacier National Park and Coeur d'Alene, Idaho on the way. And going back you could go through Seattle, Vancouver, and Banff. The switchbacks on Multnomah Falls are not bad - I've seen plenty of young kids up there. The waterfall area doesn't have any hotels, but it's only 35 minutes from downtown Portland, so you can easily do it for a day trip. Another day trip from Portland you might want to look into is Silver Falls State Park. It's a little farther away, but it's got some really cool waterfalls and easy trails for kids. Have a great time! -Brian

      Perfect Little Planet Thanks! Just wanted to know cuz I don't see much updated about after the fire. I was actually in the area a week before the Eagle Creek Fire and was devastated when I saw it on the news. +Perfect Little Planet I live pretty close to the Gorge (about a 30 minute drive). I as well as many other Oregonian's cried as we watched one of the true "Gem's" of this state go up in flames. And to see the flames jump to the Washington side made it all that much worse. There were fires everywhere during this last summer. We got much of the smoke from the Eagle Creek fire here where I live. The sun was no longer yellow but red. It was quite an eerie feeling. I will be going there next week to take a look at the damage. And to think, all this destruction of our beautiful land was started by a young boy with one single firecracker::(( I think he got 1500 hours of community service and his folks have to make financial restitution, but nothing close to the pay for the damage their child did. It's one thing to have nature clean it's own house......it's another when it's unnecessarily done by the ignorance of youth:::((Great video!!

      The timed-use permits aren't required for 2023, only for the parking lot at Multnomah Falls, but you can drive up and down the waterfall corridor any time now. And even at Multnomah, the permit is only from 9am to 6pm, so if you go early or later, you don't have to pay anything.

    If it was pronounced "veesta" then it would be spelled "Casa de Vista"!
    But it's not! Quickest way to let locals know you're a tourist is to mispronounce a local town, landmark, etc. Say "veesta house" at local bar or restaurant in Cascade Falls and we just cringe!!

    • @PerfectLittlePlanet
      @PerfectLittlePlanet  6 лет назад +1

      That's a fair argument. I can't really argue with the local way of saying something. I suppose you could take my argument and bring up Seattle, named after Chief Si'ahl. If I went around calling it Si'ahl because that's the way it was pronounced in the original language, it's just not right. Anyways, thanks for the correction! -Brian
