"Someone can be suffering right next to supportive people but feel isolated and afraid."
-sadly true
There’s nothing like feeling/being alone in a crowd. The crowd/others intensify the feeling of aloneness. As Marilyn once said: « if I’m going to be alone, I want to be by myself. »
I've been this person, to embarrassed to admit I had a problem, afraid that the people I loved would lose respect for me. It almost got me killed a few times. Eventually I admitted I had a problem, and with help from a doctor and support from those loved ones, I've been clean for 2.5 years.
If you think someone might be struggling, tell them that you are there for them, regardless. If you are struggling, there is no advantage keeping it to yourself, you're worth the effort.

I was also shocked by the comment made by Matthew Perry. It felt so honest and raw, I had so much respect for him that night.

Episode: “The One Where Dr. Grande Speculated About A Show Like This”
Great ending point about nostalgia and it being better to move on. It reminds me of a get together with some friends I hadn’t seen in 20+ years. We had a great time but it was clear our lives had all changed us in different ways and we wouldn’t pick up spending our weekends together. Part of me almost wished we hadn’t gotten together and just left the memories in the past. But it’s good to know everyone is okay and living full lives.
Bless Matthew Perry. The guy has real guts and determination.
When I hit a bad depression...which is a lot.... I rewatch friends and it is a great comfort. Friends should be on prescription

Agree. I'm turning 45 this month, and I was surprised to learn that he's a few years older than me. I would have guessed he was younger. He looks young for his age
No.... he looks like a healthy 49 year old... like me. Too many unhealthy and cosmetic surgery gone wrong people screwing societies idea of what a normal healthy person looks like.
I worked on the Warner Bros. Lot in Burbank during the height of filming Friends, ER, West Wing, Suddenly Susan, Drew Carey, etc. I can tell you that the women on Friends were truly great friends. I saw them nearly every day having lunch on the commissary patio - laughing and enjoying each other’s company. Actors love being on that lot. There is an energy and an aura around those with big hit shows. They KNOW. They are fully aware they are crushing it.
The NBC exec who set up Must See TV the popular TV 📺 line up wrote a non fiction book about that era. I think it was Jeff Zucker but I'm not entirely sure. I wanted to do the Warner Bros set tour in 1997. It would have been fun to see the studios, lots up close.
@@DavidLLambertmobile everybody loves the WB tour. George Clooney was famous for commandeering a trolley full of tourists and doing the tour himself! It’s not a flashy theme park experience, but there’s so much film/TV history there. My office had been Liz Taylor’s bungalow while filming “Giant.”
I'd bee giddy with glee too if I was making the money they were for playing make believe and having endless residuals and Aveeno commercials to look forward to! Beats working for a living.
@@Gamble661 and what 20-something on the planet wouldn’t be drunk with glee!?!?
I saw a filming. Of Friends and waited all day in a roped off area by a parking lot. Actors from other shows would waive at us as they walked to and from their cars! A few stopped to chat with us! The actors knew we were there to see Friends being filmed and wished us luck on getting a seat before filming stopped for the day. Great memory!
I used to work night shift when my children were younger. My nurse co-worker loved Friends and introduced me to the show. We'd watch it together, reruns. I developed a great affection for it. I have warm memories of sitting with nurse Christie, middle of the night, watching Friends together.
My favorite was Phoebe, far and away.

One thing I like about your analysis' is you show compassion for many who are suffering, and you also do not scimp on the sarcasm for those who cause the suffering.
Well said!
I remember 'Friends' first episode and looked forward to watching it every Thursday night at 8:00 p.m. The intro song was great and we'd all sing along and do the "clap." The show was a huge success and all of them were really funny and their stories were filled with many adventures. In 2001, I had developed an addiction to pain medication from a major neck surgery and admitted myself into a rehabilitation center for 30 days. It changed my life and I never took those pesky pills again. During those 30 days, we attended nightly group meetings around Los Angeles and remember seeing Matthew Perry one of these nights telling his story of addiction. He's come a long way; and I respect him for his brave fight through the pain he was going through. It was a tough time for all of us and I remember his words were such an inspiration in helping me through a really challenging time in my life.
I watch Friends every night, huge fan. I do not believe that the main 6 are as close as they claim. The show wrapped in 2004 and since then they were all in the same room together twice. Just two times. One of those times they were each paid 2.5 million dollars so that would motivate most people.
Also I sadly think they thought Perry was a train wreck and they didn't want to get involved. Perry said on the reunion "I don't hear from anyone". That wasn't a joke. At the end of the day it was a job. They each have their own lives to live. So why exaggerate your relationship when there is no relationship. That frustrates me.
Dr Grande could play Phoebie’s scientist lover that moved to Minsk.

It's David, actually

Thank you for doing this so respectfully. His pain/discomfort was palpable. I hope he has found peace, whatever that looks like for him. Finding peace within yourself is such a personal thing but we all have felt similar emotions in our own journeys and I think that is why it resonated so much with so many people.
Haven’t watched the friends reunion and still not sure I will, but I’m damn well gonna watch Dr. Grande talk about it!
Exactly! He saved me the trouble..
Yep
I wish I hadn’t seen it tbh. I can’t ‘unsee’ the awful work Aniston, Cox and Schwimmer have had done to their faces. Rather than becoming older attractive people they just look changed and strange. Nice to see how genuinely close they were and still are.
It was great and great fun. Very enjoyable.

@@Celisar1 Don't you love how he referred to Matthew Perry by his actual name but the three female actresses are called by their characters names, and he spelled two out of three of them incorrectly. Real intellectual giant we're dealing with here 🙄
Aw, you're a cute Friends fan, Dr. Grande! I like your point about not getting too sucked up by nostalgia and always chasing what's already gone. I think we all get stuck in that rut from time to time.
Sometimes you get to an age and point of life where you realise what's gone is likely much better than anything that lies ahead. Its a natural temptation to want to look back rather than forward in that situation.
I always had so much sympathy for Matthew Perry. You can definitely tell by watching the series he went through so many things. You see his weight fluctuate drastically.
Quite honestly, it seems like it's been extremely hard for him to make sure his jokes were funny enough and just the pressure to remain like that for ten years is enough to break anyone
i agree, we need more new ideas and less rehashed, reloaded, reboots. im glad you said this. companies cash in on our nostalgia but can never recapture the same magic. they just recapture our time and money without giving us much substance in exchange
It’s because the culture has reached its limits and completely deconstructed itself
Aww❤ he had taken his body through hell and back and I’m so glad he got the chance to tell his story in his book. It’s sad he never married or had kids - it may have saved his life if he was forced to slow his roll and felt secure in a relationship.
It would be impossible for me to care less about that show or anyone on it - but I like Dr. G's takes on things, so I'm here for it.
I do not know what’s the big deal about this show. I have a friend who watched it and I never laughed at a single joke or anything....and most of the time I do not even get what the 6 of them were blabbing about. I guess Three’s Company, the Honeymooners and The Golden Girls caused me to set the bar high in terms of comedies.

Wow...brilliant line: neuroticism is needed for drama. Didn't get into show but fun analysis. Thanks Dr G🥰💜💚
That was an interesting thought for me too. I'd never really noticed it being neuroticism but that explains my general abhorrence for sitcoms. I really can't cope with too much of it in real life, I most certainly won't consume it for entertainment. Also perhaps why I have never plugged in to their careers post friends?
Though I really have been a fan of Matthew Parry, I think because he is so obviously really feeling it. Not attention seeking, just not able to be "normal." I think he's one of the most underrated actors of my time. And that makes me sad.
Funnily enough, I think Matt LeBlanc is probably quite underrated as well but I don't feel one way or the other about it.
@@camerashycoco Glad you agree. I think Dr G's statement may apply to real life too? Haha. But yes too many sitcoms are silly, have too much meaningless dialogue & drama, & make fun of others, something I hate. Perry always seemed very unhappy & Schwimmer & La Blanc were ok but once you get those roles hard to break out into other things. Aniston was w/Pitt so that helped her career.
Agreed
Dr. Grande speaks clearly and with great calm, which is remarkable nowadays
Thank you for bringing up the Matthew Perry comment about feeling as if he would die if he didn't get a laugh. This comment struck me as well, not only as a therapist in training, but as someone who personally deals with anxiety/social anxiety. We tend to put these actors on a pedestal but it's so refreshing to see their human side. I wonder myself if he suffered from a mental illness such as anxiety and how fame/performing in front of an audience impacted this. I wonder if the drug and alcohol abuse was a way to cope. I really appreciated his honestly and can 100% relate to this feeling in social settings or when public speaking.
I so love that you did an analysis on Friends, and it warmed my heart to to hear that you appreciated it too! Just a great and special show all around!
I haven't had a chance to watch the reunion yet, but that was so sad hearing about Matthew Perry's overwhelming anxiety!
Thank you for your very broad range of topics, and all your Very well crafted, quality videos! ♡

And to listen to you talk about the hollywoods
Every bit of that statement sounds painful 😣
Wow Dr. Grande! You’ve thought deeply about this show and the characters. It’s fun to see that you grew up with this show and and cared for them.
I think Perry is a wonderful actor, a genius, not only for his amazing acting skills, but for his strenght in managing his struggles AND meanwhile succeeding in acting so well, in the very same moments he was having so many troubles inside.
Most of us would have done an awful mess in that situation.
He's honest and brave and he will always have my most profound respect and love. His sensitivity and his sorrow is clearly so deep. In every scene of Friends, while he was making all of us laugh so hard, he was suffering. I thank him for giving us the truth about him, his reality behind the Friends fiction. Fame and million dollars can't help you in these situations, they can make everything worst.
You really get on the topics so fast! What an amazing work ethic you have to keep pumping out good content on relevant topics!

I can always count on Dr. Grande to help me understand and get through a horrible and traumatizing event.
I never really connected w this show. If I felt like watching television, and it was on, I would watch it. It was really funny. To me, the meaningfulness of this show is the nostalgia it conjures for that era. The reunion spoiled the nostalgia.
It was never about an era, it was about friendship, relationships, development. For me the reunion was really nice because it was full of true feelings, warmth and... tada: friendship :)
Dear Dr. Grande: As usual, thank you for your professionalism AND just being you. Your wisdom came through in the question about a "throw-back" show for Friends, when you indicated such a project would probably NOT be helpful to either the show or to its cast and writers.
>>Generally speaking, having dabled in acting, I am in agreement. "Leave 'em hungry," is a good moto to live by. Besides, time changes almost everything in the contemporary world, for better or worse, and nostalgia is little more than an imperfect time machine (sad songs excepted).
PS Pick your sad songs very carefully and Direct Your Feet to the Sunny Side of the Street (unless you like the shade).

Dr. Grande, you aged a lot better than some of the cast!👍
I thought the reunion fell a little flat. It could have been so much better. I was surprised that it was the first time that all of the actors had been together in 17 years. I don't think they were as close as they portrayed themselves. No way you could share 10 years of true, close friendship and never get together again. Especially with all the money and location independence these actors had. I noticed the old "three's a crowd" dynamic between Lisa, Jen and Courteney. Lisa is always the odd person out and excluded. I wonder how that made her feel over the years. Matthew's comments, behavior and mannerisms reminded me of my Dad in the early stages of Alzheimer's and parkinson's features. I feel like Matthew might have a neurological disease. This could also explain his recent controversial behavior on the dating app Raya. I was most impressed with David. What a nice guy. Overall this was a strange, bittersweet show.
I'm surprised I didn't see more people notice this. You are "Family" but You only get together once in 17 years??? Give Me a break! That honestly broke my heart and I'm a full grown Man. They are obviously normal people like You and I. These people were co-workers, nothing more. Jen didn't invite the guys to her wedding. Whatever. I'll continue to enjoy the show for what I need out of it.
I don't believe the "we're a family" thing either. Maybe Courtney and Jennifer, but not the others.
My thoughts exactly!
We wouldnt know if they had a reunion before as these actors dont always broadcast their private lives, but we’ve seen 2-3 or maybe even 4 of them get together through the years. Jennifer and Courtney are sure best friends, but Kisa Kudrow is still their friend. She was at Jennifer Aniston’s bday party last year.
@@idakristinedemesa5234 They said at the start of the reunion that it was the first time in 17 years that all of the actors had gotten together.

my ex-wife used to love this show so I would watch it with her and started laughing all the time when watching it. I think Friends had that affect on most people. It def had wide appeal which is why I think it was so successful. Funny, I had lunch with one of my best friends yesterday, I treated him to lunch as a graduation present. For some reason when ever we chat in person his voice and mannerisms remind me of you. 😆😂- Keep up the great work Dr. G!!!!

I was in the Navy when Friends was popular, so I only saw a handful of episodes. I keep planning on going back and binge watching the whole thing. There are several one liners from that show that have become part of our ordinary conversation, like, "That's too much information," and "How YOU doin'?"
Matthew Perry had a problem regulating his intake of alcohol. You mean he was an alcoholic.
I remember Matthew Perry saying he was desperate for laughs from the live audience and felt like he was going to hyperventilate if they didn't.
Also noticed Matthew talked the least amongst the group. He only spoke a few times and in some of the scenes he wasn't even there.
I'm sure he felt a lot of pressure to try to remain on par w the others and had fear of being judged.
R.i.p. Matthew. Too bad he couldn't hang on for a few more days; Gotten the medical check ups on his heart, etc.
His life was in the fast lane. Seemed like he didn't have people around him to keep him grounded.
Thank you , that was absolutely remarkable

Again, I feel like the only person on Earth who doesn't enjoy Friends. I understand it's critically and commercially successful and probably deserves this immense success. I sit down and try to watch an episode and I just sit there stony-faced and bored.
You're not alone. In my own experience, it suffers from the same problem as most other sitcoms, in that if you remove the laugh track, the comedy disappears along with it.
You're not alone my friend, I never managed to watch an entire episode of Friends and I don't think I've missed much! Fair play to fans of the show, just not my cup of tea

I thought the final question would be “ were Ross & Rachel on a break? Discuss”
Great analysis. Like Cheers, Frasier and Seinfeld the whole seasons can be watched again and again. I think the best sitcoms work because they are not too tied to the era in which they are set.
True. I only watched Friends this year, 17 years after it ended. Watching it was still enjoyable for me.
They are timeless...Frasier is my personal favorite
Frasier writers pure genius
When he said Friends was the best sitcom I thought he probably doesn’t know Frasier.
A more clever, sophisticated and witty sitcom has most likely never aired imo.
I agree. Frasier airs on over the air 🛰 tv channels Orlando FL. Mon to Fri. Even in 2021, the show seems timeless. The acting 🎭 & writers were ✅. That sitcom ran 12 seasons too!
Such a calm and soothing voice!
I totally agree with your comments about nostalgia. Have a great holiday weekend, Doc.😘
I diagnose this channel as having excellent speculation. Thanks Dr. Grande, please don't forget Andy Kaufman.
I don’t think I’ve ever watched a full episode of Friends. Other shows I never seem an episode of: Seinfeld, 24, Game of Thrones, Lost, ER, Grey’s Anatomy...the list goes on and on as I become less and less attuned to pop culture.
Me too!
My losing interest in pop culture started from The Sopranos. I stopped in the middle of the show and never finished it. I haven’t seen any network, cable, and streaming show since no matter how popular or talked about it was.
Two comments: first, that Matthew Perry had these painful feelings of insecurity when the audience did not laugh at his jokes; He would be troubled and felt isolated and alone . If he had shared his feelings with his co-stars, they may have offered him the support he needed. It is a risk to be open with your feelings, but this is how you can connect with others. Also, I agree that this should be the Last Reunion of The Friends Show. Nostalgia can be disappointing when you try to relive past experiences only to discover that you have changed, your friends have changed and the world has become a different place. Great analysis again from Dr. Grande.
Superb analysis, Dr. Todd!
I was more of a Seinfeld fan. Jerry Seinfeld, the character, would be an interesting subject for one of these videos!
Yes!!! A Seinfeld analysis would be great!
Newman!!!!
Sign field is a classic… I would definitely watch that
seinfeld was popular in the us but no one has heard of it outside of the us
Same
I used to date a guy who was also going to the same rehab as Matthew Perry. He alleged that Matthew Perry confessed that he would consume hundreds of opioid pills daily. I used to think wow, how could he get all those pills...and how the heck was he still alive after all those. Just glad he's doing ok and hopefully sober now.
Great video Dr Grande!!
Thanks Dr Grande. Interesting perspective.
To me it seemed like he may have had a minor stroke. The slurred speech and how one side of his face was a bit droopy made me think so. I used to work with people who had strokes and immediately that’s what I was reminded of
He apparently had emergency dental surgery the night before this filming
I was expecting the Doc to say 'Stroke' but "emergency dental surgery" it is! Both produce the same look, I suppose.
I love Friends! I agree with not trying to recreate the past by making new Friends episodes, look how bad the revisiting of Will and Grace was. Love you Dr.!!!!!!
I love how Dr. Grande is relating to everything we (or I) am thinking about friends. The message you gave at the end was also powerful; not just related to friends’s show. Sometimes things should be kept the way they are/were, really. I think it also would be wonderful to have our generation’s form of a “friends” show, in terms of how our modern day issues are. Even tho I can relate to everything about that show and that was ages ago, it still was different than our times now. It would be interesting to see what today’s friends would look like.
Dr Grande's grasp of the obvious is amazing!
No big mystery here. He has obviously started using again and being surrounded by all his old friends who are doing great was not the best situation for him to be in . He's in a really dark hole . The last thing he needed was to be put on television with a bunch of people who are really happy .
The answer is Vicodin, that’s what happened to Matthew Perry.
It'll stop a person's G.I. tract from working, too
I don't understand that. I was given Vicodin after my C-section. I took only one pill and couldn't stand it. Never took another. I could never get how he got addicted to it.
@@Ioncandi - everybody’s different though. Everyone’s brains react differently to various drugs or substances. I’ve never liked whiskey, for example, and don’t understand how some people form the habit of drinking it every night. But just because we didn’t enjoy how a particular drink or drug tastes or made us feel doesn’t mean others have the same experience with it.
Yep, he's been a pill head for a very long time, probably has had a couple of liver transplants too.
@@mistym0rning Oftentimes we force ourselves to like a certain substance, like alcohol for example. Hardly anyone takes their first sip of alcohol and goes "Dee-licious!"
Always enjoy your videos :) xx
