You mention that hip hop has similar issues. Bo's got a song about that too, because of course he does. It's called Oh Bo.
And "Repeat Stuff" for the pop song variant! Everyone does it and he doesn't pick sides; so great, Bo! Call everyone out on their crap.
Yes! This is what I've recommended before and I'm glad someone else does it too! We need to break down the bars bro! 😄
Came here to say this about checking out Oh Bo. ☝️
Good song
"Y'all dumb mfs want a keychange?" Just brilliant. Bo is tremendously clever. I hope he gets healthy and back on stage soon.
Huh? He released a whole special a few weeks (or months) ago, so yes, he is better. At least to the point where he can be productive.
@@1996Pinocchio that was like a year ago and they mean like actually on stage not just recording
And then "Thematically meandering, emphatically pandering". It's disgustingly good
@@clayden9017 I don't think he ever intends to go back on stage. And I kind of hope for him he doesn't if he doesn't feel like he can do it again.
@@rallyfan101 wasn't the whole point of all eyes on me that he wanted to get back on stage again but covid fucked it though?
I love his speech after the song.
"You know, like THAT genre? They're lying to you, that's all. They're lying. Entertainers, they are lying... and they are manipulating you and it's not in the good way. It's like advertising. You deserve better. I'm not saying I'm it, but I'm the guy that says you deserve better, you go get better, then you say 'Thank you, weird man. BYE.'"
What's funny .. the Steak-Umm's twitter account literally says everything they do is to try and get you to buy steak-umms.. Its a weird kind of self aware advertising.. (its a great follow)
About the mandarin thing you mentioned at the end : The sentence goes like this : "I could sing in mandarin, you'd still know I'm pandering." Meaning, it doesn't matter if the lyrics make sense or if the listeners actually understand.
Easily gotta be his funniest song "I say the word truck, they jizz in their overalls" the whole song is such a scathing takedown of the cynical, fake country music that's out there. And it's hilarious
I really enjoy the oneabout God and love songs :)
This is one of Bos finest works. What I play for people who ask me why I don't like modern country music. Love Bo.
This, exactly. Are there great country players/writers/songs out there? Of course! But most of the stuff that gets played on "Today's Country ™" radio is utter crap, and truly good country music can't get played any more than many great bands can't get on pop or rock stations.
@@colleenmahony8803 I always think about my grandpa when talking about country music. According to my mom he didn't consider anything past the 60s or 70s country lol
It's kind of unfair for Bo to be so smart to figure out every country song and sing it at once. He retroactively won grammy's for it.
That's not every country song lol. It is for the artists hes referring to though lol
@@kristinewhitfield4110 yeah I meant the artists I hear. i don't listen to country except when it comes on at work
The scarecrow bit made me laugh so hard when I originally watched the special
Laughed so hard I pee'd a little.
Same here 😂
On a second look right before he brings up the scarecrow he said he hoped you didn’t pickup “rapey” vibes, then he’s touching someone whose sleeping. I mean yeah it ends up being a scarecrow but the intent
Bo’s songs alway got layers, like onions.
Bro “PANDER-BEAR” got me
4:25
YES!!!
Right?! I hadn't heard that one before
Dude I lost it. 🤣
I died
As legend Steve Earle said on modern country and its shift towards banal popular music: "They're just doing hip-hop for people who are afraid of black people."
Steve Earle is where it’s at!!
You gotta love Steve Earle.
The most brilliant line in this whole thing is "Y'all dumb mf-ers want a key change?" and I rarely hear reactors mention it. It's kinda subtle and slides under the radar. But the key change as a means of ramping up emotional response is one of THE OLDEST acts of musical manipulation. Used across nearly all genres. For me, that one line just MAKES this entire song.
I want to point out a brilliant line which is: Like Mike's Evander-ing, f*** your ears I'm pandering.
Just too perfect but mostly overlooked.
Who is Mike Evander
@@stephencronin1080 It refers to Mike Tyson biting the ear of Evander Holyfield during their boxing match.
@@manxdarcqpaw744 oh shit that is clever af
Omg I don’t know how I missed that like .. mike bit off evanders ear 👂 😭😭😭
That's a straight bar for real!
he has a similar song called Repeat Stuff that attacks the industry as well it's a great listen
Drake is a perfect example of this happening in the hip hop community. So Drake has a song about started at the bottom now we here. But he was a child actor on Degrassi in Canada. He started rich.
Didn't know that
I thought the same thing when that song came out.
The message aside, he has a great voice. I could listen to his voice all day long. I’m not a big fan of country. At 70 I’m still a big hard rock fan. But love the best of all types of music.
4:00 ooh you've gotta react to Eff. it's one of Bo's less well known songs because it never appeared in any of his specials but it's a really great one and some of the lyrics kind of touch on what you're saying here
I say it everytime I hear the song, that key change slaps! Bo is a genius
Being from Nashville, this is one of my favorite things he’s ever done
Lived there for over a decade - possibly related, the key change line was my favorite
Country singers grow up in the city of Dallas and get paid millions to, as Ice Cube puts it, "be pimped out" by the country music companies. He sounds like Lonely Island songs.
Bo went for the throat with this song and just...hit the jugular.
Check out his video for "Repeat Stuff", " I Cant Handle this" and "Welcome to the internet".
Along the same line of thought...
Murder on Music Row, George Strait and Alan Jackson
AM Country Heaven, Jason Eady
Bo spitting truth bombs as always.
Still doesn't hold a candle to "a white womans instagram" song 😂.
Bo has taken the best parts of Tim Minchin and Weird Al and morphed them into his own unique style.
I think the part where he says "I could sing in Mandarin, you'd still know i'm panderin" is trying to say that the words said in the song don't matter. That he could sing in a different language and it wouldn't change anything.
Might go a bit past that, the three biggest languages for business internationally are English, Spanish, and mandarin, with mandarin being the only one that people would learn mainly for international level business deals in America.
I think that when Bo says that "I can speak mandarin." he means that the words and lines are so repeated in country songs that even in another language you can tell what they are saying.
This
I thought he sang "I could speak in mandarin/ you'd still know I'm pandering" . But anyways, the meaning is just that.
++I'm pretty sure the lyrics are "I "COULD" speak Mandarin"
@Zero 'O Clock "I could sing in Mandarin"
My favorite lines in this song:
"Like Mike's Evandering
Fuck your ears, I'm pandering.
I write songs for the people who do
Jobs in the towns that I'd never move to."
Reminds of that I Eminem line “they said I can’t rap about being broke no more, they ain’t say I can’t rap about coke no more!”
as an avid country fan, the trueness in this is astounding. BRING BACK 90s COUNTRY!!!
Bo's commented with finest wit on a lot of genres: pop love songs, rap/hip pop, slower "deep" songs, country music, even musical comedy itself.. Can't wait for you to discover more :)
He does make a good point that some country artists sing about things they’ve never done, much like you made the point that some private school kids rap about being gangster having never lived that life. For perspective, and it’s not necessarily pandering, but in the heavy metal community, a lot of the artists are nerds. They like Lord of the Rings and D&D. But they usually don’t hide it. But it is a hilarious comparison.
Finally!! Truly one of my favorites from bo. Great vid thank you mr L
You’re the only reactor I’ve seen that actually stopped to appreciate the “legalize gerrymandering” line
It's already legal
@@jeffbrehove2614 racial gerrymandering isn’t. Not saying it doesn’t still happen, but officially it’s illegal.
Holy shit this parks and rec episode is sooooooo much more amazing.
I love your commentary. Watching you react to these songs is like hearing them for the first time again.
It's amazing just how completely he nails these people. I can think of a few dozen people just like he described, I'm sure many of you could also.
Real country is amazing. Why would I want to listen to randomly_generated_singer_00475 when I could listen to, in the words of Tim Wilson, "Merle Ass Haggard."
Bo Burnham- RANT = Ammmmazing.
Seen this performed live in San Diego, I was crying from laughter.
Chris Stapleton, Whiskey Myers, Jamie Johnson are some of the only "new" real country artists these days that don't conform to the pop style country.
I recently found Colter Wall and I think he's one of the best attempts to recapture the true cowboy country
Tyler Childers
@@kalebtlt1630 I see Childers and only think, Appalachia. I like him too
Try the Steel Woods as a recommendation
He has an OLD song ( about 11 years old) that addresses problems in hip hop called “oh, bo” and in love songs ( about 7 years ago) called “ repeat stuff”
Please do "From God's Perspective" by him next :)
"You went to private school."
Dude! Why you gotta do Clearance from Cranbrook like that. He grew up to be Falcon and Captain freakin' America! 🤣
This and Gods perspective are my favorite Bo songs.
Oh bo is a similar vibe with a critique of the Rap genre
As somebody who didn't like country growing up but now can appreciate some of the older music I personally feel like country stopped being what it was originally when the song Cruise came out, that was its death for me in hindsight...
September 11th was the true death of the country genre, true outlaw and rebel country died out to be replaced with super patriotic or super Christian subgenres, and they all sound identical. That’s faded away now, to largely be replaced with stadium country, but that was the beginning of the end.
I love this guy's reaction to Bo's songs...does he honestly not know that Bo is a comedian who's style is to point out irony? If he does know than he himself is a fantastic actor to do it dead-pan and not letting on!
What? He doesnt even act that way, he obviously picks up the actual meaning...
Keith Urban is from New Zealand what does he know about country
Even his name isn't Country.
Keith Urban is fine but even when I first heard him as a kid 15 years ago I was like "this guy doesn't sound like country music, why is he on this station?"
He’s Aussie
I'd really like to see you react to Orville Peck - Dead of Night
I'm not at all into country music but I dig his stuff. Great voice a bit reminiscent of Evlis. Very interesting fella/look as well.
Keith Lionel Urbahn AO is an Australian-American musician, singer, guitarist and songwriter known for his work in country music. In 1991, he released a self-titled debut album, charting four singles in Australia before moving to the United States the following year
He is married to Hollywood star Nicole Kidman.
Keith Urban is mainstream Country for sure. He's Australian and an amazing guitar player.
Keith Urban is Australian but sings Country Music in a Southern American accident. He is hugely popular for some reason.
Left Brain, Right Brain!
Every time I hear your intro music immediately reminds me of the Metro games even though there are differences.
I’m cracking up 🤣 this is my all time favorite Bo song 🤣🤣 it’s soooo true
I've worked farms. Been in the Marine Corps. I used to love country until it became exactly what he's describing. That's why I like blues and metal now.
I agree with him for every major artist after.....2006 7 or 8.
Luke Bryan hosts a fishing tournament, and hints EVERY chance he gets.
Marin Morris MAY have hit a deer with her car once.
But I'd say George Strait was probably the last COWBOY country singer. He still raises longhorns on a Ranch in Oklahoma
Bo Burnham…
God. Damn. Genius.
I came to the comments to see how many people requested keith urban... I'm sooo glad no-one did.. as far as i saw.
Yea Bo my boy! He keeps it real and cracks me up every time
On of my fav bo burnham songs love ur reactions
I’ve never seen your content before but your reactions were priceless! Love it!
Yesss, been waiting for this one! Hope you do "God's Perspective" as well.
The bit about speaking Mandarin is because he's saying that this kind of song is so transparently dishonest that even if it was in a different language you didn't understand you'd still notice how much it's pandering to its audience, he just went with Mandarin instead of another language because it rhymes.
The line is “hear that subtle mandolin” implying the instrument a mandolin started playing
@@Onlythesassiest they’re talking about a different line, it definitely does say “I could sing in mandarin, you’d still know I’m panderin”, it’s the first line of the first chorus. “Hear that subtle mandolin” is in the same chorus but it’s in the fifth line.
the entire reaction i was sat here waiting for "that is a scarecrow, i thought it was a human woman" lol I love pandering I wish it was on spotify i'de stream it so fricken much
This song is feckin brilliant x"D glad you experienced it despite the discomfort lol
The way I take the "Mandarin" line is these are very educated people. Not just a public education, but privately tutored for future success. Public schools mostly teach Spanish and MAYBE another European language like French. Mandarin and other languages like that are taught to people who are not considered "salt of the Earth." So just another way these country stars are not like the people they pander to.
Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, Joseph. And a good rhyme is just a good rhyme. Also, no. They don't get taught Mandarin. Nor do they want to be. As long as they're stateside, they don't need it.
@@LongandWeirdName
You think salespeople and other office workers in multinationals don't get paid more for being able to speak another language? That being able to speak the language of a country that has become economically competitive with the US doesn't have its advantages? That rich people don't raise their children to be in better positions to succeed? Or even for the bragging rights that their children are learning a language that has a reputation for being difficult to learn?
@@josephhoward9631 Since when are stadium "country" "stars" sales people and other office workers in multinationals? Also, it's still a much better bet to learn Spanish or Russian. China is a pretty big market, but with the CCP in power, not a very trustworthy one. One wrong move on either side of the political issue and the market will be flooded with regulations that screw you over. The Spanish speaking market(all of South America, plus Spain) or the Russian speaking market(Any country East of Poland, North of India, and Not SEA) are a safer bet, if you ask me. I might be biased against the commies, though.
@@LongandWeirdName
This song is about how the country stars are nothing like the people they're pandering to. Someone educated in Mandarin would be as far away from the kinds of people they're pandering to.
@@josephhoward9631 You're defending a lost cause. Mandarin is just one if the many rhymes for pandering he uses in the song. Nothing more. Land you're in, mandolin, Mandarin, gerrymandering... Heck. If I'd get stuck on anything, it'd be that last one, not a language.
All he's saying in that line is "I could speak in a language you don't understand, you'd still be able to see that I'm sucking up to you with the right use of words so I can get your hard earned cash without putting much effort into it myself".
I don't think Bo meant they literally speak Mandarin... besides the rhyme, he meant they could be singing in a different language, you'd still be able to tell they are dishonest.
He said “hear that subtle mandolin” mandolin is an instrument that is shaped similar to a guitar and is used in a lot of country music
@@Onlythesassiest He also says "I could sing in Madarin, you'd still know I'm pandering" which is what we are referring to. I'm responding to his comment that country singers don't typically know Mandarin.
I'm loving your channel, thanks for the content!
I'd give Bo mad props if he learned and did a whole chorus in Mandarin.
Del the funky homosapien, one in a million. Amazing artist
lmao. your reaction is astounding. nice
Wheeler Walker Jr is the country you need.
Been looking forward to this one
In the US, there are some restrictions on Gerrymandering, such as it being unconstitutional to draw the electoral maps based on racial lines, but it is not really banned.
However, if you wait for a court to decide that the district lines were drawn illigally, the ruling will be finalized far too late, after the election has already happened, making the whole thing pointless.
Honestly, the international community should declare countries that utilize the first past the post voting systems as corporate dictatorships, just to apply some pressure to abolish this sorts thing.
Love the shirt today my guy!
He was so funny on Parks and Rec.
Like Kid Rock who went to private school but panders to the, uumm, "SKEEWW!" people...if you know what I'm gettin' at 😜
“Can’t handle this” is his best song in my opinion
"I walk and talk like a feild hand, but the boots I'm wearing cost 3 grand" idk but I love that part
This is my favorite track from Bo! So genius. Can we expect some more George Carlin soon? I'd love to see his sanctity of life bit or really anything from his later years
The thing about Bo is, he knows exactly what he is singing about and we all love it.
For a prime example of what Bo's talking about here: *"Fancy Like"*
Burnham's comedy doesn't do much foe me; it's just not my thing/style. But he's undoubtedly talented And sharp and I do kinda dig this song.
You need to do demondice's new EP "shut up, get happy"
You are right that country music isn't the only genre filled with phonies. I've always had a problem with Bob Dylan, for example, because he was a suburban kid from Minnesota trying to sound like an Oklahoma dustbowl farmer out of admiration for Woody Guthrie. Guthrie was 100% genuine. Dylan was a pale imitation.
“We have people rapping about being a gangster like bro you were born in a suburb” best thing I have heard all day
I love this channel so much.
When he said “You went to privet school” it made me think of “This guy is a gangster? He’s real name is Clarence” 🤣
The key change is genius
Reaction everyone can do it. Don't live off his creative life.
Real Country music involves lyrics like, "You were the first one to make me... fall in love and then not take me." and "Shotgun Willie sits around in his underwear. "
Must do words words words
90s country is the best to me. I wont listen to any new country if Im feelin country music that day.
This song is so true. I identify as a metal head but I absolutely love OLD country music and take great pride in being related to Johnny Cash, but I hate 98% of what is on the country stations nowadays.
I'll listen to Dolly Parton or Reba McIntire all day but can't stand a lot of newer stuff, like chicken fried, who the hell sings that one, it follows this exact formula! It is so obnoxious!
Well now i feel silly for recommending this on another video before seeing you reacted to it already
The Mandarin thing is basically him saying that he could be speaking another language that you don't understand and it would still be obvious that the song is pandering to the audience simply based on how words in the song are sung.
7:25
I think it means that even if he is singing in manderine you can still understand the song because of how cliche and overused it is
"I could sing in Mandarin
You'd still know I'm pandering"
Notice the "You'd still know"
I love your shirt in this video.
