Now THIS is a nostalgia mind-fuck right here!! I don't care what anyone says, this game was epic in every conceivable way. And to people who grew up in the states, THIS was Super Mario 2!! Man, this was definitely the game I played the most out of every single NES game I've ever owned. Me and my sis played this from the time it was released up until the mid to late 90's, and sadly, I haven't seen it since. I'd rent out my left nut to be able to play this piece of awesomeness again.
The original SMB2 did eventually come out in America in several incarnations - part of Super Mario All-Stars, Super Mario Deluxe, and as a stand alone game for the Virtual Console, albeit with decreased difficulty.
If you're not a child of the 80's, SMB2 was a believable sequel, being the enemies in SMB were (mostly) different than MB. Once 3 came out, then things became clear. Also, some of these "SMB2" characters did appear on other SMB franchise games.
some weird glitch: this glitch takes very precise timing and if done right the music in sub-space will play non-stop. grab a potion but don't drop it. get 5 cherries, drop the potion and get the starman that appears. wait 4 seconds, enter the door, wait about 5.5 seconds and leave. if you did it correctly, the SMB 1 overworld theme will continue to play even after leaving the door. it took me a few tries to get it to work
there were two other differences of note with THIS Super Mario 2 and Doki Doki Panic: 1. To beat the game you HAD to play with all 4 characters in the game. In this game you could just switch them out as you chose 2. the waterfall speeds were slowed down. It turns out that kids in Japan suffered seizures because of how fast the waterfalls went. There was a similar problem with the Pokemon Anime but that was simply because of light patterns that were used in an episode of the series
When i was a kid, i use to always hide behind the couch whenever my older brother would fight the flying bird head boss. Looking back i cannot believe that scared me lol.
i'm so happy you have my version . . . it's on the wii . . . everyone else seems to have a newer version where new tricks are available. i'm having the most trouble with 4-2 . . thanks for this. and you have a really sexy voice.
Great review so far Aqualung. you can cheat in 1-2 by using Luigi & tossing the black jumping thing under the high platform, Jump on it, duck, then super jump onto the platform.
The thing is, this was the original concept of Super Mario 2 in japan...but it was changed to the one they got. We got what was eventually the very game they originally wanted to do!!
THIS was the ''original'' super mario bros 2. While Nintedo was making smb2, they had it planned to look like how it looks like now. Nintendo made a deal with japanese tv channel to advertise channel's new cartoon characters. Nintendo gave the prototype of smb2 to japanese tv channel, after replacing characters and some items with doki doki panic theme'd items and characters. Nintendo then made other smb2 with smb1 graphics, now named Lost Levels. It was too hard, to they took the prototype
Super Mario 2 is like Zelda 2. Hated by many, but took some chances by being different. I feel it's still a great game. Was the only game I could beat over and over, a bit on the easy side. But still classic Nintendo.
Sometimes it's almost impossible to find the original cartridge, and in that case emulators are a great alternative - you DO play the game then after all, and you can even use certain controller adapters so you can use the NES controlle with the emulators.
Honestly though, for all intents and purposes, this version of Super Mario 2 is indeed a Mario game, even if it didnt start out as one...and it was well recieved enough to get its own release in Japan so that has to count for something. I just cant stand when people say its not a real Mario game as someone said...its like Zelda 2, hated by many but was bold enough to be different, and actually introduced many things seen in this game in later games such as Shy Guys, Birdo, and other things...
sooooooo glad we got this awesome masterpiece instead of that frustrating, mario bros on steroids shit they got over in japan.. this really worked in our favor.
@Bananadine well, Japan eventually got this game too I guess... although maybe they had to wait for their version of All-Stars to see it (Wikipedia says Japan got a version of All-Stars, anyway)
I think this game can be fun despite it being almost nothing like the first one. I'll pick the first or third one over this game any day, but it's still enjoyable.
lol to this day i can still kill this game in like 30 minutes or under with Peach, she was the real op'ed character on the game but fun as fuck to playthrough with.
@TheConnyB people maye hate on it, but at least this game gave modern mario games some characters like the shy guys. so yeah some new characters came from this mostly hated game at least
Being a kid in 1988, and the internet being nonexistant, Mario 2 was an acceptable sequel. You didn't care really, it was Mario and that's all you came for. Despite all this, Mario 2 actually had the weakest game sales of the trilogy. 1 & 3 dwarf it by a country mile, so perhaps the public knew something was up.
Can somebody help me? When i was young i played nes Batman.but this batman is like a: small batman in big stage.there is level in big house where is everithing big and batman is small.I dont know how that game is called if somebody knows reply me.thank you
I see you don't know the "Guaranteed 1-Up" trick on the slot machine. Either that, or you just played blindly for the sake of a review (more realistic play). Another quirk of the game is if your invincible, and go to sub-space, exit just as invincibility wears off, the "Sub-Space Music" will play in the regular world.
And I just want to let you know I TOTALLY disagree with you that emulation sucks first of all. Second, you said that you wanted to play this game again, the guy suggested another way of playing to you. Don't give him lip-service for it or bash emulation needlessly.
I thought the Japanese version should have been released to America instead of this version, I like both games, but this seems a little too easy, but then again, the Japanese version was a little too hard. Thumbs down my comment if you want; that's my opinion.
Where i grew up no-one played as Luigi. It is only with the internet that ive realized that people actually play as him(In a non ironic way). I always played as the princess or as Mario....or sometimes Toad for variation and funny looks. But never Luigi with his terrible jump-spasm that you cant control....you are sure you are not just being Luigi-hipsters? ;)

Amazing review very detailed and a well projected voice.
This was (and is) one of my favorite NES games!
Mine too, kitty friend!

Yeah, Shyguys and Snifits made it to other games. Birdo is in some of the racing games.
I miss this game a lot back in 1999 Id played nothing else but this.
I loved that rhythm you'd get when you hit pause
Great review. This was the hardest of the 3 for me.... Did anyone notice how much darker this one was then 1 and 3???
some weird glitch: this glitch takes very precise timing and if done right the music in sub-space will play non-stop. grab a potion but don't drop it. get 5 cherries, drop the potion and get the starman that appears. wait 4 seconds, enter the door, wait about 5.5 seconds and leave. if you did it correctly, the SMB 1 overworld theme will continue to play even after leaving the door. it took me a few tries to get it to work
YES! Thank you so much. Knew you'd tackle this one one day.
also at 9:05 this can also be done by power-jumping off the ninjis as luigi. you don't have to use luigi but it's a whole lot easier
there were two other differences of note with THIS Super Mario 2 and Doki Doki Panic:

I personaly like to use Princess T. She may move slow but her hovering ability really helps out.
sir you are the best game reviewer ever. No hate on your accent, it's excellent!!
When i was a kid, i use to always hide behind the couch whenever my older brother would fight the flying bird head boss. Looking back i cannot believe that scared me lol.
Fuck yeah, Super Mario Bros. 2.
It's days like these that make me glad I subscribed.
YESSSS! Been hoping you'd do this one. I want to buy that collab DVD too
i'm so happy you have my version . . . it's on the wii . . . everyone else seems to have a newer version where new tricks are available. i'm having the most trouble with 4-2 . . thanks for this. and you have a really sexy voice.
You can also throw the key at 8:28 to kill the flying face mask
I used everybody in rotation throughout the game. All get 5 uses each, which are exactly 20 levels coincidentally!
i like luigi the best. you have to love his jumping skills :D
yeahhhhhhhhhhhh awesome review/walkthrough, i love this game!
Just like Christmas morning, it's Aqua Claus, with a shiny new present.
AHAHAH "ugh, Fucking it!"
HAhaha
Awesome review man!
perfect as always aqualung
I have to say, I liked this one a LOT better then the first.

YES! Do Super Mario 3 next!
sooooooo glad we got this awesome masterpiece instead of that frustrating, mario bros on steroids shit they got over in japan.. this really worked in our favor.
Nice we someone replied to this video 8 months ago...(I still live in the past and can't let go)
dude you make me laugh so hard with the comments you make
More like AWESOME, than GREAT, dude. XD
Oh a new one for Mario cool
@Bananadine well, Japan eventually got this game too I guess... although maybe they had to wait for their version of All-Stars to see it (Wikipedia says Japan got a version of All-Stars, anyway)
Well Super Mario Bros. 3 is my favorite out of the trilogy, but Super Mario Bros. 2 is still a great game.
good job
you did a WAYYYYYY better review than the irate gamer
@sethmusic yeah, if you buy the actual game, it doesn't have Aqualung talking in it. That may be more up your alley. >_>
and finished it with mario characters(like it was suppoused to be) and then released it as super mario bros 2.
So THIS is the real original smb2.
The cartridges are never off Ebay.
Doki Doki panic started out as a Mario game. Wrap that around your head
Thumb up if you still play nes games Today :D
I have a question:
How were the shy guys and Birdo ending up in other mario games if they really are not mario characters.
LOL @ the Birdo thing...
He'll do 2 new Atari reviews next, then hopefully he'll move on to the beast that is SMB3! :)
I think this game can be fun despite it being almost nothing like the first one. I'll pick the first or third one over this game any day, but it's still enjoyable.
It's more than enjoyable, idiot. It's one of the greatest games on the NES, bar none.
lol to this day i can still kill this game in like 30 minutes or under with Peach, she was the real op'ed character on the game but fun as fuck to playthrough with.
at 8:06 it looks like a flying pizza dough
It's on Wii's Virtual Console.
Amazing game.
5:03 it doesn't matter what Nintendo calls Birdo today, Birdo is a dude.
and yes, birdo is a boy. he thinks he is a girl though :P
@FieldMarshall3 haha they scared me too, man!
@iceblue1220 they effectively became Mario characters when this game was released--it's fiction, and the authors can do whatever they want
@geno1082 lol, very good point.
@jameygamer yep it is nice
Isnt Pidgeot the same name as a pokemon.
did they make this for wii yet?
You ought to try to GBA remake of this game ;D
@Bananadine but whut about in japan?
you could always emulate it
@TheConnyB people maye hate on it, but at least this game gave modern mario games some characters like the shy guys. so yeah some new characters came from this mostly hated game at least
Lol, sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't.
ILOVEYOU
whats teh song in teh beggining?
Being a kid in 1988, and the internet being nonexistant, Mario 2 was an acceptable sequel. You didn't care really, it was Mario and that's all you came for.
Despite all this, Mario 2 actually had the weakest game sales of the trilogy. 1 & 3 dwarf it by a country mile, so perhaps the public knew something was up.
so the boss is like bomb man???
Kinda looks like MegaMan to me!
did it?
Can somebody help me? When i was young i played nes Batman.but this batman is like a: small batman in big stage.there is level in big house where is everithing big and batman is small.I dont know how that game is called if somebody knows reply me.thank you
When i watched The Irate gamer's Review, I can say that one sucked ass!
AquaLung is the King of Game reviews, so ya, you rock Aqua!
@GisherJohn24 except zelda 2 was legit, this was doki doki panic
I like SMB2 from japan even if it is cheap.
LofuckingL, this comment made my day.
2:30-2:33 HOORAY FOR MURDER!!! 8D
You must've had a lot of time on your hands
OHISEC
hey ur right birdo is a boy just...very confused
no - they play super mario on NES though.
Mario brothers 2 wasn't released to america because it had the poison mushroum and it was not FABULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I came.
I just checked both British and American Ebays and it's not exactly a rare game. $10 to $20.
a little less talk and a lot more action
he. her. she, it or Fucking IT!!! LMFAO!!!
MARIO 2
LMAO birdo transexual, haha i loved your review man is so freakin funny!!
And I just want to let you know I TOTALLY disagree with you that emulation sucks first of all. Second, you said that you wanted to play this game again, the guy suggested another way of playing to you. Don't give him lip-service for it or bash emulation needlessly.
is there a version without the talking?....very distracting
He... she... whatever... IT!
Bostonian accent?
emulator's suck dude. I'd much prefer to buy an NES console and the game cartridge.
I thought the Japanese version should have been released to America instead of this version, I like both games, but this seems a little too easy, but then again, the Japanese version was a little too hard. Thumbs down my comment if you want; that's my opinion.
I consider Mario Sunshine to be the worst Mario game
Birdo is a male who wants to be a female, who'd of though it... oh wait me
i never use Luigi in this game. Hes crap
hes pretty good actually
Where i grew up no-one played as Luigi. It is only with the internet that ive realized that people actually play as him(In a non ironic way). I always played as the princess or as Mario....or sometimes Toad for variation and funny looks. But never Luigi with his terrible jump-spasm that you cant control....you are sure you are not just being Luigi-hipsters? ;)
