It's me, Katherine Steele and for today's Theatre Thursday, we're going to build and organize your audition rep book!
This has been a highly requested video from the #TheatreThursdayFam🎉💕🎭 (make sure to join+subscribe if you haven't already!!) so it's definitely been on my list! Finding the perfect audition material can definitely be stressful. But, once you've build a repertoire of songs to choose from, it becomes infinitely easier then trying to learn and choose new songs for every single auditions.
So, we'll talk about all of the sheet music categories every actor should have and the various ways you can organize your rep book!

I have college auditions coming up (29 days until I audition for my dream school! I'm dying lol) and I was wondering if i should put my material in a binder with pocket things and take the sheet music out and give it to the accompanies or punch holes in the paper and print the sheet music back to back? (Can you tell I'm overthinking things? lol)

Your videos are super super helpful and very validating for a young actor like myself. I have a question, how do you get the sheet music? There's tons of ones that you have to pay for, should I just sift around until I find clean sheet music to print? Or is there an easier way to find good sheet music? that thing you said about physically cutting the music for the accompanist? i did that once for an audition and had the accompanist say “oh that’s cute” really condescendingly. it psyched me out so bad, lemme tell ya.

I'm not the best when it comes to counting Sondheim so I lowkey learned all of my callback rep by listening to the DVD of the stage production--all the tempos are the same+correct (unlike the cd lol). Anyone re-watching in 2019? I’m rebuilding my rep book! Any suggestions for mezzo belters?
i’m a mezzo soprano with a soprano range (i hit that E6 with very little difficulty on an okay day) so my vocal coach and i have made 2 different rep books based on what i’m auditioning for! so i’ve got a lot of material to choose from 😅 have you heard of anyone doing this?
At the moment, most of my rep is jazz, since I'm training in jazz vocals, but I have some musical theatre pieces too. Could I use my jazz material in an audition, do you think? I'm working on a range of jazz styles, including swing, Latin, and ballad, and I'm working on expanding the types of jazz I sing, as well as trying some new genres.

I have one for monologues! I just like haveing paper copies of all my monologues in the same place. (different binder than my rep)

+Kíla Dunne hi!! 🦄💖 depends on what you need for auditions. If you know that that one song for that genre will work perfectly for every character and vocal range that you ever audition for, then you're good.
But I would recommend having a couple of contrasting pieces for the popular categories 😊

So I've heard you talk about 16 bar cuts of songs, and when I was looking into auditioning for a part at my community theatre, they said, "Please prepare 16 measures of a song."
I'm assuming that it means 16 bars. The problem is I have no idea how to count bars

Can you put loose definitions of how one would split contemporary from Classic and what constitutes a ballad and that sort of stuff?
+97Hallelujah classic = pre 1960, Contemporary = post 1960. Uptempo = fast paced song, ballad = slower 😊

What are some good songs for a mezzo soprano person 11-16 that's type is a Disney princess or just a sweet girl next door.
Oooh, that is fab, you can use the majority of disney princess songs, for example, When Will My Life Begin from Tangled, Something There-Beauty and The Beast, God Help the Outcasts-Hunchback of Notredame, Part of That World- Little Mermaid, Can You Feel The Love Tonight-Lion King, if you are a higher mezzo perhaps a second soprano then maybe For The First Time-Frozen! Hi! I'm in need of help so PLEASEE can someone help me out like Katherine or just anyone who knows. It will help me out a lot. So basically it's about finding a CD for songs. All of the CDs for songs I see online sound nothing like I listen to and they just aren't right. I even bought a soundtrack but it wasn't even the right thing. How do I find a good CD for any song? You can redirect me to a website, a video, etc. ANYTHING helps! I haven't be called back from many auditions and this is the reason.

+Veronica Crawley Hey Veronica! 💕 okay, so genre can depend on a couple of different things-- Golden Age & Contemporary are done by date, Sondheim means it was composed by Stephen Sondheim, etc.
Which genres do you specifically need help understanding?
+Veronica Crawley 8/16/32 bars are measured by counting the bars of sheet music 💕 (space between the vertical lines = 1 bar)
Katherine Steele it's hard to tell which songs are ballad and which are considered uptempo..and I don't have sheet music for this specific audition but they asked for 32 bars so I'm doing 1:00-1:20. do you think that's fine?

+Julie Galorenzo Hi there 😊 Every casting director, pianist, and music director I've worked with (onstage & behind the scenes) has strongly recommended against sheet protectors. But, if it works well for you, go for it! 💕
very interesting. not trying to "start" something lol but it isn't just me! it's standard in nyc! 25+ years in the biz both behind the table and as a performer. you always hear different points of view but if someone walked into an audition in ny with their music not in sheet protectors it would be real weird lol
